For the 2026–27 federal FAFSA, a trust is generally reported as an investment asset of its named beneficiary—even if access is voluntarily restricted. A trust restricted by court order is the exception: the beneficiary should not report it. The amount to report depends on the beneficiary’s rights to income, principal, or both, and may be the present value of those rights rather than the trust’s full balance.
Does a trust fund affect FAFSA?
Yes, generally. The 2026–27 FAFSA lists trust funds as investments, and Federal Student Aid’s 2026–27 Handbook says a trust is an asset of its named beneficiary even if access is restricted. The FAFSA form asks for current investment value as of the date it is signed; investment net worth is current value minus debts related to the investment. The Handbook’s trust guidance determines which beneficiary interest is relevant.
Are revocable and irrevocable trusts treated differently?
The words “revocable” and “irrevocable” alone do not determine FAFSA treatment. The federal guidance focuses on the named beneficiary’s economic interest and the trust’s distribution terms, rather than providing a simple rule that one label counts and the other does not.
For a revocable living trust, identify who owns the assets and who is named as beneficiary; if the parent or student has a reportable investment interest, the trust label does not by itself remove it from consideration. An irrevocable trust may also create a reportable interest for its named beneficiary. Review the actual instrument and amendments to establish the relevant rights.

What trust interest should be reported?
The FAFSA treatment depends on what the beneficiary is entitled to receive and when. Do not automatically report the trust’s gross corpus as the beneficiary’s asset. The Handbook distinguishes these common arrangements:
| Beneficiary’s interest | Federal FAFSA treatment |
|---|---|
| Interest only | Report interest received during the base year as income. If interest accumulates instead of being paid, report the present value of the right to receive it as an asset. |
| Principal only | Report the present value of the beneficiary’s right to principal. The Handbook describes this as what a third party would pay today for the future right; a trust officer can calculate it. |
| Interest and principal | Report the present value of both interests. If both accumulate until the trust ends, report the present value of the amount the beneficiary is expected to receive at termination. |
These distinctions come from the 2026–27 Federal Student Aid Handbook. The trust instrument and distribution schedule determine which row fits; ask the trustee or trust officer to help value a future interest.

Does a trust count if the beneficiary cannot access the money?
It can. A settlor’s voluntary restriction does not by itself remove a trust from FAFSA assets. The Handbook treats a court-ordered restriction differently: a beneficiary should not report a trust restricted by court order. Its example is a trust ordered by a court to pay for future surgery for a car-accident victim.
Do not assume that trustee discretion, a spendthrift provision, or a family-imposed limit is a court order. Establish whether a court actually imposed the restriction and keep the relevant order with the trust records.

What documents and details should you check before filing?
Gather the trust instrument, amendments, and any court orders. Then establish:
- Who is the named beneficiary and who owns or controls the trust?
- Whether the beneficiary can receive income, principal, or both.
- When distributions are made and whether income or principal accumulates.
- Whether any restriction is voluntary or court ordered.
- The present value of the beneficiary’s relevant interest, if a future right needs valuation.
If the value of a future right is unclear, ask the trustee or trust officer for a present-value calculation. The FAFSA form uses current investment values, not simply the trust value from an earlier tax year.

Does this rule apply to every college’s financial aid?
No. This guidance describes federal FAFSA reporting. A college may use a separate institutional aid method, including its own treatment of trusts or CSS Profile information. Ask each school’s financial-aid office how it evaluates the specific trust; the federal FAFSA rule does not establish every institution’s policy. Federal Student Aid’s guidance also says that if current circumstances differ substantially from tax-year information, submit the FAFSA and contact the school to explain the change. The school decides whether to adjust FAFSA information.

- Read the trust instrument and amendments to identify the named beneficiary and the rights to income and principal.
- Determine whether distributions are paid now or accumulate for a later date, and establish the present value of the relevant right.
- Check whether a restriction was imposed by a court; retain the court order if so.
- Use current investment information for the FAFSA, and ask the trustee or trust officer for valuation help where needed.
- Ask each college about separate institutional aid treatment. If family finances have materially changed, file the FAFSA and contact the school to explain.
This is general federal reporting guidance for the 2026–27 award year, based on the FAFSA form and Federal Student Aid Handbook available October 3, 2026. The terms of an individual trust and applicable trust law affect a beneficiary’s rights, so this is not a determination of how a particular trust must be reported.
