To see what an unconnected visitor may find, copy your LinkedIn public profile URL and open it in a private or incognito browser window while signed out. To control what is displayed, use Public profile & URL: on desktop, go to Me → View Profile → Edit beside that heading; in the mobile app, go to Profile photo → Settings → Visibility → Edit your public profile.
The signed-out page is the closest practical check, but LinkedIn may show non-members a limited preview or ask them to sign in.
What “public” means on LinkedIn
Your public profile is a simplified version of your LinkedIn profile. It is the version that may be available to people who are not signed in, search engines, public profile badges and certain approved services. It is not automatically identical to what a signed-in LinkedIn member or a first-degree connection can see.
LinkedIn controls public display by section. Some profile areas cannot be shown publicly, and a visitor may receive a shorter preview even when your profile is enabled. LinkedIn explains the scope and limitations of public profiles in its public-profile guidance.

View your public profile on a computer
- Sign in to LinkedIn.
- Click Me at the top of the homepage, then select View Profile.
- In the right-hand panel, find Public profile & URL and click its Edit icon.
- Copy the public profile URL shown in that area. A custom URL may be shown if you created one.
- Open a private/incognito window, or a separate browser in which you are not signed in to LinkedIn.
- Paste the URL and load it.
Review the page as a signed-out visitor would. Opening your profile in the same signed-in tab is not a public-view test because LinkedIn members can see information that outsiders cannot.
View or change public visibility on desktop
The same Public profile & URL panel is LinkedIn’s current control center. The official desktop instructions are documented at LinkedIn Help.
Turn the entire public profile on or off
Switch Your profile’s public visibility to Off to stop displaying your public profile to people outside LinkedIn and in search-tool results, subject to existing search indexes and cached copies.
Hide only selected sections
Leave overall visibility on and switch individual sections off. Changes save automatically. The available controls depend on your account and content; for example, an Articles & Activity option may not appear if you have not published a post.

Hiding a section from the public profile does not necessarily remove it from the profile shown to signed-in LinkedIn members or connections.
View or change public visibility in the mobile app
- Tap your profile photo.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Visibility.
- Under Visibility of your profile & network, tap Edit your public profile.
- Review Your profile’s public visibility and the individual section controls.
Changes save automatically. Menu labels can vary by app version, language, account and region.

What to inspect in the signed-out version
Use the private-window page as a privacy and accuracy checklist. Check:
- Name and profile photo
- Headline and location
- About text
- Current and past experience
- Education
- Licenses and certifications
- Skills and recommendations
- Featured content
- Articles and activity
- Contact information
- Custom buttons, links, badges and creator-related elements
- Personal details that you no longer intend to expose
Compare what you see with the toggles in Public profile & URL. Settings show what LinkedIn allows for your account; the signed-out test shows what is reachable in that browser at that moment.

If you cannot find “View profile as”
Older tutorials often refer to a View profile as button. You may not have that option: LinkedIn’s current Help instructions focus on public-profile settings instead, and the interface can change by account, device and region.
- Open Public profile & URL.
- Copy your public profile URL.
- Open it in a private window or another browser where you are signed out.
- Use the visibility switches to change what is displayed.
Do not assume that a missing button means your profile is private.
Why the public page may differ from your own view
Signed-in members and connections can see more
A LinkedIn member who is signed in, especially a first-degree connection, may see profile information that is not included in your public profile. Public visibility and connection-specific visibility are separate settings.
LinkedIn may require sign-in
A private window can show a sign-in or sign-up prompt, or only part of the profile. That is consistent with LinkedIn’s stated treatment of non-members and does not by itself prove that public visibility is disabled. Check for any visible header or partial profile, then review your settings and test another browser or device.

Not every public section is supported
LinkedIn describes the public profile as simplified. Some sections are ineligible for public display, and the controls shown in your account are the authoritative list of available choices.
How to check search-engine exposure
A signed-out URL test and a search-engine test answer different questions. Search your name and your public profile URL in Google and Bing while signed out. Search results can contain an older or incomplete copy even after you change LinkedIn.
LinkedIn says Google, Bing, Yahoo and other services may take several weeks or months to refresh their indexes, and LinkedIn does not control that schedule. For an outdated result, follow the relevant search engine’s outdated-content or removal process, as described in LinkedIn’s guidance on incorrect search results.

Selective hiding: the usual compromise
Keep Your profile’s public visibility on for discoverability, then turn off personal, outdated or unnecessary sections. This can preserve visibility for recruiters, clients and collaborators without publishing every eligible field.

Disable public visibility entirely
Switch Your profile’s public visibility to Off in the public-profile settings. This reduces exposure outside LinkedIn and removes the profile from future public indexing, but it does not instantly erase pages already indexed or cached.
LinkedIn also warns that disabling the public profile can potentially complicate account recovery if support later needs your public profile URL to verify or recover access. Weigh that operational risk against your privacy needs; it is not a reason to leave sensitive information public.
Practical verification methods by goal
| What you want to know | Best check |
|---|---|
| What an unconnected visitor may see | Open the public URL in a private/incognito window |
| Which fields LinkedIn permits publicly | Review Public profile & URL settings |
| What a signed-in member sees | Ask a trusted person to view your profile while signed in |
| What a first-degree connection sees | Ask a trusted connection to check it |
| Whether search engines still expose old data | Search your name and public URL in Google and Bing |
Key limitations to remember
- A private-window result is the closest practical public check, not a guarantee that every visitor receives the same page.
- Incognito mode only prevents your current browser session from being used; it does not bypass LinkedIn’s access rules.
- Turning off a section on LinkedIn does not instantly remove old search snippets.
- A public profile URL may not be shown while public visibility is disabled. LinkedIn’s public-profile topic page explains URL availability at this Help page.
- Profile-photo visibility has its own interaction with public-profile controls; see LinkedIn’s profile-photo settings guidance if the photo result is unexpected.
LinkedIn’s labels and layout can move as the product changes. If your menu differs, look for Visibility, Public profile or Public profile & URL rather than relying on an older button name.
