Do not choose an exchange based on its advertised 24-hour volume alone. Compare the same trading pair and time period across the venue’s trade records, its order-book spread and depth, and an independent provider’s assessment. These checks can help identify inconsistencies, but they cannot prove that counterparties are independent or that every reported trade is genuine.
Why a large volume figure is not enough
Trading volume is a measure of reported completed trades over a stated period. It does not, by itself, tell you how many independent traders participated, whether the market can fill your order at a reasonable price, or whether the exchange’s records are complete.
Wash trading is activity that creates misleading trade reports to make volume appear higher than it is. In its 2023 proposed rule, the SEC said, “there is no reliable way to determine whether trades reported are actually between two different market participants or are the result of wash trading.” The statement describes a market-data limitation, not a finding about any particular exchange. The SEC also cautioned that reported figures could be significantly misleading. SEC, 2023 proposed rule
A 2022 National Bureau of Economic Research working paper, later published in Management Science in 2023, estimated that wash trading averaged more than 70% of reported volume across the unregulated exchanges in its 29-exchange study. That is a historical, sample-specific finding—not a current estimate for every exchange. NBER working paper

Compare the same market on the same terms
Before checking figures, define exactly what you are comparing. BTC/USDT spot trading, BTC/USD spot trading, and a BTC derivatives contract are different markets. A provider may also aggregate venue records or filter them according to its own methodology, so two 24-hour figures may not measure the same thing.
- Pair and quote currency: Match the exact asset pair, such as BTC/USD, and note whether the quote currency is converted into another currency for reporting.
- Venue type: Keep spot markets separate from futures, options, and other derivatives.
- Time window and timestamp: Check that both figures cover the same interval and record when you checked them.
- Data definition and freshness: Note what the provider counts, any exclusions or aggregation, and when its data was last updated.
CoinGecko publishes its methodology and describes volume, order-book depth, spread, and activity signals among the factors it considers. Check the exchange’s trade records
Where available, use the exchange’s documented public trade history or recent-trades feed. Review a representative period rather than relying on a single moment. Compare the records’ timestamps, prices, and trade sizes with the exchange’s displayed volume and with the price movement in that market.
- Open the exchange’s official API documentation and find its public recent-trades or trade-history endpoint for the relevant market.
- Confirm the endpoint is for the same spot pair or derivatives contract you are evaluating, and note its time range and any pagination or record limits.
- Inspect trades across a representative interval. Look for records that are consistent with the exchange’s displayed activity and market prices; investigate sparse or unusually repetitive patterns rather than treating them as proof of misconduct.
For example, Kraken documents a public spot post-trade endpoint, while Binance.US documents public trade data and order-book depth. Kraken public spot trades Binance.US market data Public records show what the exchange exposes; they do not establish that its records are complete or reveal who controlled the accounts on either side of a trade. Blockchain wallet transfers are not a reliable substitute for measuring market turnover, either. SEC, 2023 proposed rule

Measure liquidity with spread and order-book depth
Volume describes reported completed trades. Liquidity is about how readily you can buy or sell at prices near the current market price. For the exact pair you expect to trade, inspect the bid-ask spread and the amount of buy and sell interest close to the midprice—the midpoint between the best bid and best ask.
- Spread: A wider gap between the best bid and ask means you may pay more to buy or receive less to sell, before considering fees.
- Depth near the midprice: Check whether the available size on each side of the book is meaningful for the order size you expect to place. A large order may move the price if nearby depth is thin.
- Snapshot limits: An order book is a snapshot. Orders can be changed or canceled, and displayed depth is not a promise that an order will fill at that price.
CoinGecko’s methodology includes spread and order-book depth among its liquidity signals. CoinGecko methodology Its May 2026 update says its exchange liquidity assessment directly compares volume and depth against selected reference exchanges; it also describes Trust Score as relative to the peer population. Those measures can help screen venues, but they are not certificates that volume is authentic. CoinGecko May 2026 update

Cross-check with independent assessments—and investigate mismatches
Compare the exchange’s pair-level data with at least one independent provider, then read how that provider builds its assessment. Check whether it benchmarks venues, filters data, reports pair-specific information, or presents an exchange-wide score. Methods, reference sets, and scores can change, so record the provider and date of your check.
Pay particular attention when reported turnover looks strong but the same pair has thin depth or wide spreads. Sparse or oddly repetitive trade records, a large gap between providers, or stale data are also reasons to pause. First check for a mismatched pair, quote currency, time window, aggregation method, or update time; do not average conflicting figures into a supposedly precise “real volume” number.

Neither a third-party ranking nor an API feed independently verifies beneficial account ownership or proves that trades represent distinct economic activity. The available sources do not establish a current, exchange-by-exchange rate of genuine volume.
Keep volume separate from other exchange risks
A volume check answers only a limited question about reported activity and market liquidity. Before choosing a venue, assess its security, custody and withdrawal arrangements, fees, supported assets, availability to customers in your location, and relevant regulatory status. CoinGecko’s score structure treats liquidity, cybersecurity, regulation, incidents, and proof-of-reserves disclosures as separate components; a score is not a legal endorsement or a full compliance audit. Be careful about applying futures-market oversight claims to spot trading. The CFTC describes surveillance for futures and options markets; that is not a certification of every crypto spot venue’s displayed turnover. CFTC market surveillance
