Before connecting a wallet to a crypto presale, find the offer through a project channel you reached independently, verify the exact domain, investigate the people and claims, and decide whether the investment itself makes sense. A wallet connection is not an endorsement, and a genuine presale can still lose money. Never enter your Secret Recovery Phrase on a presale site, and do not sign a request you cannot explain.
Is this presale a scam? Start with the exact website
A polished page, familiar logo, token ticker, large social following, paid search result, or celebrity association does not prove an offer is genuine. Scammers can imitate established brands, build convincing dapps, and publish fake news-style pages. MetaMask advises checking a presale link against the project’s independently reached official channels and says, “Always double-check the URL before you make any transactions.” MetaMask Help Center: Token pre-sale scams
- Open a known project channel yourself. Use a project website or account you already trust, rather than an unsolicited direct message, influencer link, ad, or link printed on an unfamiliar token or NFT.
- Follow the presale link from that channel. Compare the full domain character by character with the expected address. Look for misspellings, substituted letters, extra words, or an unusual domain ending.
- Check consistency across sources. See whether the same domain and presale details appear in the project’s established documentation and channels. A search result or widely shared post is not independent proof.
If you cannot establish that the page belongs to the project, do not connect a wallet or proceed to a transaction.
Check the people, terms, and promotional claims
Research the people and entities named in the offer using independent sources. The FTC recommends searching a company or promoter’s name with terms such as “review,” “scam,” or “complaint.” Compare promotional claims with the project’s own documentation, and look for clear terms explaining what the token does and what rights, if any, it gives its holder. - Be wary of urgency, fear-of-missing-out messaging, or pressure to act before you can verify the details.

- Do not treat a white paper, roadmap, audit claim, community size, exchange listing, token name, or ticker as proof that a promotion is authentic or that a token will rise in value.
What does the wallet request actually authorize?
Connecting a wallet and authorizing a transaction are separate actions. A connection prompt by itself does not necessarily transfer funds. A later signature, token approval, or transaction can have a different effect, so read each wallet screen rather than assuming that a request is harmless because it follows a connection.
Before signing, identify the network, asset, recipient or spender, amount, and operation shown. A token approval can let a dapp move that type of token up to the approved cap. If the wallet screen does not make the effect clear, stop and consult the wallet provider’s official documentation. Decline any permission or transaction you cannot explain. A wallet warning—or the absence of one—does not establish whether the presale is legitimate.

Never give a presale site your recovery phrase
Do not type a Secret Recovery Phrase into a presale page, support form, chat, or verification flow. MetaMask says, “You should never enter your Secret Recovery Phrase on any website, regardless of how convincing it is.” A page requesting it is an immediate stop signal. Assess the investment separately from the website
Even if a presale page is authentic, that does not make the token a sound investment. The CFTC advises buyers to consider the rights attached to a token and factors that could affect its value, including adoption, future uses and demand, competitors and technology changes, liquidity, and theft risk. Keep the two judgments separate:

Do not assume a token’s legal status from its label
A project calling a token “utility” does not by itself settle whether securities laws apply. The SEC explains that securities laws apply to crypto assets when they are securities, and that some assets that are not securities may become subject to securities laws when offered and sold under an investment contract. Regulator and wallet guidance can change, as can project domains, interfaces, and scam tactics. Re-check the current official domain, offering terms, and relevant regulator guidance when evaluating a specific presale.
