Confirm what the app needs, restore access only if the app is trusted and the task requires it, then work through Apple’s standard app troubleshooting steps.
First identify what stopped working
Before changing privacy settings again, note the affected app and version, your macOS version, the exact error message, and what the failure looks like. Does the app refuse to open, crash, or launch normally but fail at one task? Also note which files or data that task needs. These details can help distinguish a permission issue from a separate app problem and will be useful if you contact the developer.
Check whether Full Disk Access is the right permission
Full Disk Access is broad: Apple says it allows an app to access all files on the Mac, including data from apps such as Mail, Messages, Safari, and Home, Time Machine backups, and certain administrative settings for all users. Restore it only if you recognize and trust the app and its function genuinely needs that level of access. Apple’s Privacy & Security settings guide describes the permission and where to manage it.
Check Files & Folders for access to a specific location
If the failure concerns a particular user folder—such as Desktop, Downloads, or Documents—the separate Files & Folders control may be the relevant setting. Check that permission rather than granting access to the entire disk by default. Apple explains this control in its guide to file and folder access.

Review or restore Full Disk Access
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings > Privacy & Security > Full Disk Access on macOS 13 or later. On macOS 12 or earlier, open System Preferences and look for the corresponding privacy setting. Apple’s macOS file-access overview notes that apps needing access to the full storage device must be explicitly added in macOS 10.13 or later.
- If the app is listed and you have decided it needs this access, turn on its switch. If it is not listed, use the Add button, select the app, and choose Open.
- Quit and reopen the app, then retry the task that failed.
Labels can vary across macOS releases, so follow the names shown on your Mac if they differ. Do not add an app you cannot identify or trust simply to see whether it fixes the issue; Apple’s guidance on powerful app permissions likewise advises allowing access only for trusted apps.
If restoring access does not fix the problem
Apple recommends general troubleshooting for apps that stop responding, close unexpectedly, or will not open. Try these steps in order:

- Quit and reopen the app if you have not already done so.
- Restart your Mac and test the same task again.
- Install available updates for the app, either through the App Store or from the developer, and update macOS.
- If the problem continues, consider deleting and reinstalling the app. First protect or export important app data: Apple warns that deleting an app may remove data stored in it.
Apple’s full app troubleshooting guide covers these steps. If they do not resolve the issue, contact the app’s developer—especially for an App Store app—and provide the app and macOS versions, the exact error, what failed, and the steps you tried.

If the app works only after Full Disk Access is restored, that is useful evidence that the setting may be involved, but it does not establish that every function of the app needs access to all files. Keep the grant only if the app is trusted and its intended function calls for broad access. If the task involves a specific folder, check Files & Folders instead; if neither permission explains the problem, continue with the app troubleshooting steps or ask the developer.

Apple describes macOS privacy controls as giving users transparency, consent, and control over app access to data. Its documentation explains what the controls permit, but does not say that every app—or every failure after revocation—requires Full Disk Access.
