Start with the exact chain error or transaction receipt, then check the signing coldkey’s free TAO, the precise stake position and units, and any lock or subnet-pool condition. A generic wallet alert alone does not show whether a transaction failed during signing, submission, validation, or execution—and it does not prove that your stake changed.
Capture the exact failure before trying again
Record the complete error text and, if available, the chain error name and transaction or extrinsic identifier. Also note the wallet and version, network, signing coldkey, target hotkey, subnet ID, requested amount, and operation: stake, delegate, remove stake, or unstake-all. Bittensor’s chain-error catalog maps exact error names to failure classes, so use the receipt’s wording rather than guessing from a short wallet notification.
Check whether the transaction was rejected before inclusion or included with a dispatch error. A wallet display may not distinguish a signing or submission problem from a chain validation or execution failure. If the interface is ambiguous, inspect the current balance and stake position before deciding whether to submit again.
Use the error to choose what to check
| What the receipt or interface suggests | First checks |
|---|---|
| Insufficient balance or fee | Check the signing coldkey’s free TAO, the requested amount, and fee headroom. Confirm whether the exact chain error concerns the balance or fee withdrawal. Bittensor chain-error catalog; insufficient-balance guide. |
| Insufficient stake or amount too high | Verify the coldkey, hotkey, subnet position, available amount, and whether the requested amount is in TAO or subnet Alpha. Insufficient-balance guide; staking and delegation guide. |
| Stake unavailable | Check whether a conviction lock, registration collateral, or another reserve reduces the amount that can be withdrawn. Insufficient-balance guide. |
| Unstake-all completed but positions remain | Inspect each subnet position. Positions may be skipped if trading is disabled or validation fails. Unstake-all guide. |
| Output or preview differs from expectation | Check the pool quote, subnet Alpha units, current pool price, fees, and potential price impact or slippage. Staking and delegation guide; unstake-all guide; fee guide. |
| Generic wallet or signing error | Save the wallet and version, signing method, network, extrinsic ID, and exact error. First determine whether a chain error exists; if not, check the wallet’s current guidance or support channel. Chain-error catalog; proxy guide. |
Check the signer’s free TAO and fee headroom
Look at the free TAO in the signing coldkey, not just the total account balance or the value shown as staked. The requested amount and the transaction fee both need to be covered. Bittensor’s insufficient-balance guide describes failures caused by too little free balance for an operation or its fee.
#1 Best Overall
The fee guide, last updated by Learn Bittensor on August 3, 2026, describes a 0.05% swap fee for stake and unstake operations, separate from the transaction fee, and says the Alpha fallback described there is currently disabled. Treat 0.05% as the guide’s documented value, not a guarantee that every operation has identical costs. Check the current transaction preview and network behavior before retrying.
Match the request to the stake position and its units
Confirm that the coldkey and target hotkey are the ones that hold the stake, and that the selected subnet is correct. An unstake or move can fail if the requested amount exceeds the stake held by that specific coldkey–hotkey position. The amount shown in a position may also exceed what is currently removable if a conviction lock or registration collateral reserves part of it. Compare the requested withdrawal with the amount the chain reports as available. Bittensor’s insufficient-balance guide covers these balance and reservation cases.

For subnet staking, distinguish the input and output units: TAO is exchanged through the subnet pool, and the resulting position is denominated in that subnet’s Alpha. Unstaking sells Alpha back through the pool for TAO. Root stake is handled separately from a subnet position. Check the selected subnet and unit before submitting, rather than treating all displayed stake as interchangeable. Bittensor’s staking and delegation guide explains the pool-based exchange.
Check locks, collateral, and subnet-pool conditions
If the available amount is lower than the displayed position, check for a conviction lock or registration collateral before changing the requested amount. Those conditions can make some stake unavailable for removal. The insufficient-balance guide describes both.

Subnet staking and unstaking use a pool, so an unstake’s TAO output depends on the pool’s current state rather than a fixed one-to-one conversion. For a large removal, review the quote or preview and any slippage control the interface offers. Bittensor’s unstake-all guidance warns that Alpha positions are sold at current pool prices without limit protection against price impact.
An unstake-all operation is not proof that every subnet position was removed. The documentation says positions can be skipped when trading is disabled or validation fails. Afterward, inspect positions subnet by subnet and identify any remaining stake before submitting another operation. See the unstake-all guidance.

When the receipt points to a wallet or signing issue
If the chain error does not explain the failure, preserve the exact error, extrinsic ID, network, wallet name and version, and signing method. Then check the wallet’s current instructions or contact its support channel. Bittensor’s proxy guidance documents using a proxy account for staking operations; a separate staking guide recommends keeping the primary coldkey in cold storage. Neither establishes that every wallet or hardware signer supports every transaction flow, so verify compatibility with your wallet and signing path.
