If you’re an eligible U.S. student or 18–24-year-old with regular Amazon Prime, you can sign up for Prime for Young Adults and may receive an eligible refund for your existing membership. Amazon’s 2026 Prime Day took place in June; the next announced event is Prime Big Deal Days, scheduled for October 6–7, 2026. Before switching, check the offer and any refund details shown for your account.
How do I switch from regular Prime to Prime Student?
Amazon’s current U.S. name for the offer is Prime for Young Adults. Amazon says higher education students and people ages 18–24 can qualify. The switch is an online sign-up and verification process:
- Open Amazon’s Prime for Young Adults sign-up information.
- Choose the verification route that fits you: verify by age, or verify student status. For student status, Amazon lists an .edu email address or evidence such as a student ID or an official acceptance letter for the upcoming term.
- Complete the verification prompts and review the price, trial benefits, and any transition or refund details displayed for your account.
- Confirm the change only after checking those terms. Amazon’s help page says existing Prime members who join receive any eligible refund for their previous subscription, but it does not specify a universal amount or posting date.
Can I switch if I already pay for Prime?
Yes. Amazon’s joining instructions cover existing Prime members and say they will receive any eligible refund for the previous subscription after joining Prime for Young Adults. The help page does not promise a full refund, a particular prorated amount, or when the credit will appear. Treat the account-specific transition details shown during sign-up as the terms to review before confirming.
What does Prime for Young Adults cost?
Amazon lists a six-month $0 trial for eligible U.S. members, followed by $7.49 per month or $69 per year. Eligibility and the terms displayed to your account govern the offer. Amazon also cautions that certain Prime benefits are not included during the $0 trial, so check the current benefit details rather than assuming the trial includes everything.

Do students get Prime Day deals?
Prime for Young Adults members can access Prime member events, including Prime Day and Prime Big Deal Days, according to Amazon. The event-specific timing matters: Prime Day 2026 was held in June, so it has already passed as of October 4, 2026. Amazon announced that Prime Big Deal Days will run October 6–7, 2026. Event dates can change from year to year; check Amazon’s announcement for the event you plan to shop.
Membership provides access to eligible event deals, not a guarantee that a particular purchase will be cheaper. Consider switching for the ongoing membership value you expect to use, rather than counting on a specific discount.

When does switching make financial sense?
The main potential benefit is a lower ongoing U.S. membership price: Amazon describes Prime for Young Adults as half the regular Prime membership price. If you qualify and expect to use Prime, the lower listed price and access to member events may make the plan worthwhile. Compare your current plan with the terms shown for the Young Adults offer:
| What to compare | What Amazon’s information says | What to check before switching |
|---|---|---|
| Ongoing price | $7.49 monthly or $69 annually after the eligible six-month $0 trial | Which offer and billing choice appear for your account |
| Trial benefits | Certain Prime benefits are excluded during the $0 trial | Which benefits are included in the current trial terms |
| Member events | Access includes Prime Day and Prime Big Deal Days | Whether the items you want are actually discounted |
| Existing membership refund | Amazon says an eligible refund may be issued; a universal amount and timing are not stated | The transition details shown during sign-up |
| Shared benefits | Prime for Young Adults benefits cannot be shared | Whether you rely on benefits from another member’s household arrangement |
What happens to shared Prime benefits?
Amazon says Prime for Young Adults benefits cannot be shared. If you currently use benefits shared by another Prime member, switching means you cannot continue sharing those benefits. Factor that loss into the cost comparison before enrolling; a lower individual price may not be a better deal if you depend on household sharing.

Is Prime Student the same as Prime for Young Adults?
“Prime Student” is familiar shorthand, but Amazon’s current U.S. materials call the plan Prime for Young Adults. The offer is available to qualifying higher education students and people ages 18–24, with verification options based on age or student status. Use the current plan name and follow the eligibility choices Amazon presents when signing up.
