How to Store XRP and Bitcoin Safely: Exchange Custody vs. Self-Custody

Exchange custody is easier but depends on a provider; self-custody gives you control while making you responsible for keys, backups and recovery.

To store XRP or Bitcoin safely, decide who you want to trust with access. With exchange custody, a service controls the keys or account access and you depend on its security and withdrawal policies. With self-custody, you control the private keys, but you must protect them and preserve recovery information. Neither choice eliminates risk; the safer fit is the one whose responsibilities you can manage reliably.

What a crypto wallet actually stores

A wallet is an access tool for private keys; XRP and Bitcoin are recorded on their respective networks, not inside the device or app. Private keys authorize access and transactions. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission explains crypto custody as the way users store and access assets through private keys in its December 12, 2025 investor bulletin.

That distinction matters when a phone breaks or a hardware wallet is lost: replacing the device does not restore access by itself. Recovery depends on whether you still have the correct recovery information, stored securely.

Exchange custody: convenience with reliance on a provider

With exchange custody, the provider safeguards the keys or controls access to the account. You use the service’s login and withdrawal process rather than managing blockchain keys directly. That can be simpler for frequent trading, but your access depends on the provider’s security, solvency, policies and ability to process withdrawals. Bitcoin.org identifies provider security, honesty, failure and frozen access as risks of relying on a service (wallet security guidance).

Before using a custodial service, the SEC recommends asking how crypto is held and what fees apply to custody, transactions, transfers, account setup and closure. Terms, availability and protections vary; the evidence here does not establish the standing or protections of any particular exchange or jurisdiction.

  • Choose a provider carefully and understand its withdrawal rules and account-security options.
  • Enable strong multi-factor authentication where available, as Bitcoin.org recommends.
  • Review fees and what the provider says happens if access is restricted or the service fails.

Exchange custody is not the same as having direct control of the private keys. XRPL documentation notes that private exchanges may hold customers’ XRP in shared accounts, which can avoid the reserve requirement for a separate account in each customer’s name.

Self-custody: control and operational responsibility

With self-custody, you control the private keys and are responsible for access, backups and safe transactions. The SEC puts the trade-off plainly: “With self-custody, you control your crypto assets and are responsible for managing the private keys to any of your crypto wallets.” If keys or recovery information are lost, exposed or unusable, access may be lost permanently; a wallet provider generally cannot restore it. Bitcoin.org similarly warns that funds sent to a self-custodied wallet with lost keys cannot be recovered by an intermediary (wallet security guidance).

Self-custody is a reasonable choice only if you can maintain recovery information safely over time, including through device loss, household changes or incapacity. A secure setup is more than buying a device:

  • Keep recovery information private and separate from the device it restores. Never share a seed phrase or private key with anyone claiming to provide support.
  • Make backups and store them in secure, redundant locations. Bitcoin.org advises against unencrypted online backups and recommends durable storage media.
  • Keep wallet software updated, and consider whether multi-signature is suitable. It can reduce reliance on a single key or location, but adds setup and recovery complexity.
  • Plan how a trusted person could handle access if you die or become incapacitated, without exposing the keys prematurely.

A hardware wallet can keep key information isolated from internet-connected computers and phones, reducing some online exposure. It does not protect against a revealed recovery phrase, a poor backup, a compromised setup process or a mistake when sending. Wallet software and its update and dependency supply chain matter too. No hardware wallet was independently tested here; before selecting a model, confirm current support for both XRP and Bitcoin, follow official setup instructions, and check firmware and software compatibility.

What happens if you lose your hardware wallet?

The physical device is replaceable if you have preserved the recovery information and can restore it using the wallet’s supported process. Without that information, losing or damaging the device can mean losing access. If someone else obtains the recovery phrase or private key, they may be able to take control even if the device remains with you. Treat the recovery material as the critical backup, not the hardware itself.

XRP-specific issue: an account reserve

On the XRP Ledger, whoever holds the secret key corresponding to an account’s address controls that account and its XRP. XRPL documentation distinguishes custodial wallets, where the user manages service credentials, from non-custodial wallets, where the user manages secret keys (XRPL wallet documentation).

A separately held XRP Ledger account has a reserve requirement. XRPL account documentation states a current reserve of 1 XRP as of 2026, while the reserve documentation explains that settings can change through fee voting. This is a dated, changeable protocol value, not a permanent promise; check the current reserve documentation and account documentation before funding a new account. XRPL also documents that some XRP may be recovered by deleting an account; review the current procedure and consequences before relying on that option.

For a personal self-custodied XRP account, account reserve requirements affect how much XRP is available to use. A private exchange may instead hold customer XRP in a shared account, so the customer may not need a distinct on-ledger account reserve. That arrangement does not change who controls the customer’s access: it remains dependent on the provider.

How to choose between custody options

Question Exchange custody Self-custody
Who controls access? The provider controls the keys or account access; you rely on its service and policies. You control the private keys and wallet access.
Main responsibility Assess provider security, withdrawal rules, fees and account protection. Protect keys and recovery material, maintain backups, verify transactions and plan for device loss.
Typical access risk A breach, provider failure, withdrawal restriction or policy change may disrupt access. Lost or exposed keys, compromised recovery information, user error or inadequate backups can cause loss.
Security measures Careful provider selection and strong multi-factor authentication where available. Hardware or offline storage, secure backups, updates and, where appropriate, multi-signature.
XRP consideration A provider may hold customer XRP in a shared account, avoiding a separate account reserve for each customer. A separate XRP Ledger account has a changeable reserve requirement; XRPL documentation stated 1 XRP in 2026.

There is no universally safer answer. Exchange custody places operational risk with a provider, while self-custody places key-management and recovery risk with you. Choose based on which set of risks and duties you can monitor and handle, rather than assuming a wallet type makes funds safe by itself.

Before sending XRP or Bitcoin

Verify the complete receiving address and transaction details before confirming. Bitcoin.org warns that Bitcoin transactions are irreversible and that support staff will not need your seed phrase or private key (wallet security guidance). Do not treat that specific irreversibility warning as an explanation of XRP transaction mechanics; for either asset, verify the intended destination and amount before authorizing a transfer.
