For many holders, a practical setup is a hot wallet for a limited amount used for everyday spending and an offline hardware wallet for savings. Keep the wallet backup—often called a recovery phrase or seed phrase—offline and private. A wallet does not hold coins like a physical purse: cryptocurrency remains on the blockchain, while the wallet manages the keys used to control it.

Choose storage for how you use your cryptocurrency

Hot and cold wallets describe how the keys are kept. A hot wallet runs on an internet-connected phone or computer, which makes it convenient for frequent transactions but exposes it to risks associated with connected devices. A cold wallet keeps keys offline. Bitcoin.org describes hardware wallets as a balance between security and convenience and distinguishes everyday hot-wallet use from cold storage for savings.

That division is a useful starting point, not a guaranteed-safe allocation or a rule about what share of your funds to keep in each place. Keep only a limited everyday balance on an internet-connected device. Consider how often you transact, how much access convenience matters, and whether you can reliably protect and recover the backup. See Bitcoin.org’s FAQ and its guidance on securing a wallet.

Protect the wallet backup

The backup is the recovery information that can restore access to a wallet. Wallet makers use terms such as “recovery phrase,” “seed phrase,” and “wallet backup,” but formats and instructions can differ. Use the terminology and recovery process for your specific wallet rather than assuming every wallet uses the same standard. Trezor’s wallet-backup guide explains that recovery depends on preserving the backup correctly.

  1. During the wallet’s official setup flow, record the recovery information as instructed. Check spelling and word order.
  2. Keep it offline. Do not photograph or screenshot it, email it, upload it to cloud storage, or enter it into an ordinary website, message, or support form.
  3. Store it somewhere that limits unauthorized access and protects it from ordinary physical damage.
  4. Follow the wallet maker’s recovery instructions if you need to restore access. Never share the phrase with someone claiming to be support staff.

Ethereum.org warns: “Never, for any reason, share your recovery phrase or private keys!” Its security and scam-prevention guidance also addresses the risks of digital copies and keeping keys offline.

Understand device loss and backup loss separately

If a device fails or is lost, an appropriate backup may let you restore access using the wallet’s recovery process. Losing the backup is a different problem: without it, recovery may not be possible. If someone else discovers a readable backup, that person may be able to recover the wallet. Treat the backup as a credential that can authorize access, not as harmless setup paperwork.

Choose a backup material and location

A paper or card backup is straightforward, but can be vulnerable to water, fire, wear, loss, or discovery. Trezor provides wallet backup card guidance; follow the specific instructions for the wallet and avoid creating digital copies.

A metal backup plate may help preserve recovery words through physical damage, as manufacturers describe. Metal does not encrypt the words: anyone who can read a plate may gain access. Ledger’s backup-storage information is vendor product information, not an independent comparison. Whatever the material, secure the backup against both damage and unauthorized discovery.

Keeping backups in more than one location can reduce reliance on a single place, but each additional copy creates another opportunity for theft or discovery. Make copies only if you can secure every one. A second hardware wallet or a split-share backup can also add resilience, but each brings additional expense or operational complexity.

Consider split-share backups only if you can manage them

Some backup systems divide recovery information into shares and require a threshold number of shares to restore a wallet. This can reduce reliance on one complete backup, but it is more complex than keeping a single backup secure. If too many shares are lost, recovery can fail. Trezor explains the approach and its trade-offs in its guide to Shamir backup. Use such a system only if you understand its recovery requirements and can keep track of the shares.

Know what a hardware wallet does not protect against

Offline key storage can reduce exposure to internet-connected devices, but it does not make a user invulnerable. Scams, phishing, physical threats, unsafe transaction approvals, and mishandled backups remain risks. A hardware wallet cannot make it safe to disclose recovery information or approve a transaction you do not understand. Verify what you are authorizing and treat unsolicited requests for a phrase or private key as suspicious.

Compare wallet choices before committing

There is no universal best wallet or backup method for every holder. Compare the trade-offs that affect your own use, and confirm current compatibility with the wallet maker before relying on a device or backup format.

Choice What to weigh
Hot wallet or hardware/cold wallet Internet exposure of keys, everyday convenience, and the amount and frequency of use. Bitcoin.org describes hot-wallet use for everyday spending and cold storage for savings.
Paper/card or metal backup Exposure to water, fire, wear, loss, and theft; also consider whether a person who finds it can read the secret. Trezor and Ledger describe their respective backup products, but those vendor descriptions are not independent comparisons.
Single backup or split shares A single backup is simpler but depends on protecting one complete copy. Shares add threshold-recovery complexity and can fail if too many are lost.
Hardware device Supported cryptocurrencies, compatibility with the wallet’s backup format, and the maker’s recovery process. Support is model- and software-dependent; check current details with the manufacturer.
