You can launch an online store without paying for inventory, a custom website, or a monthly ecommerce subscription—but not without operating costs. Payment processing, marketplace fees, shipping, taxes, returns, and your time still affect profit. The safest approach is to choose a low-cash fulfillment model, validate demand before spending, make the first sale, and reinvest only after the numbers work.

What “no money” really means

“No money” usually means no or minimal upfront spending, not a business with zero costs. You may avoid some expenses at launch while still paying costs when an order occurs.

Cost Can you avoid it initially? Practical workaround
Inventory Often Digital products, services, preorders, or made-to-order production
Monthly platform fee Often Square Free or a marketplace listing
Custom domain Yes Use a marketplace URL or platform subdomain
Advertising Yes Organic content, partnerships, outreach, or search-optimized listings
Payment processing No, once paid Include the fee in your price
Shipping Usually not Digital delivery, local pickup, or customer-paid shipping
Returns and refunds No Keep a reserve from every sale
Taxes and licenses Depends on location Check your state, city, and product-specific rules

Start with one audience, one customer problem, and one to five offers. A platform cannot create demand for an offer nobody wants.

Choose the right model first

Model Upfront cash Built-in audience Best for Main drawback
Digital products or services Lowest No Expertise, files, consulting, custom work You must generate demand
Etsy Low, not always zero Yes Handmade, vintage, designed, and permitted digital products Fees and policy restrictions
Square Free $0 monthly; fees on sales No Local products, pickup, delivery, and services You bring the traffic
Preorder or made-to-order Potentially low No Physical products and merchandise Fulfillment and refund risk

Way 1: Sell digital products or services

This is usually the closest route to a genuine $0 launch because there is no physical inventory or shipping. You invest time, knowledge, and tools you already have.

Good starting offers

  • Templates, planners, spreadsheets, checklists, presets, ebooks, printables, or design files
  • Resume writing, editing, coaching, consulting, logo design, or custom artwork
  • A local service packaged with a clear scope, price, and delivery deadline

Launch procedure

  1. Choose a narrow problem, such as a wedding-budget spreadsheet or social-media templates for fitness coaches.
  2. Create the smallest useful version and a sample, preview, or before-and-after example.
  3. State exactly who it is for, what the buyer receives, delivery time, price, and refund or revision terms.
  4. Accept payment through a marketplace, payment link, invoice, or simple storefront.
  5. Deliver manually at first, then use early feedback to improve the offer.

No inventory does not mean passive income. You still need traffic from personal contacts, useful short-form content, permitted communities, partnerships, search-optimized listings, or direct outreach.

Way 2: Sell through Etsy

Etsy can provide marketplace discovery without building a standalone site. Its rules allow items made, designed, handpicked, or sourced by the seller, subject to its Creative Standards and prohibited-item policies. Check country availability and current rules in Etsy’s shop-opening guide.

US fee signals checked August 16, 2026

  • $0.20 per listing; listings generally expire after four months.
  • 6.5% transaction fee on the order amount, including applicable shipping and gift wrapping.
  • US Etsy Payments processing listed as 3% + $0.25 per order.
  • A one-time, nonrefundable setup fee may apply and varies by location.
  • Offsite Ads can add 15% for sellers under Etsy’s stated sales threshold or 12% after reaching it, subject to Etsy’s rules and maximums.

See the current Etsy fees and taxes and payment-processing rates. These are US examples, not a worldwide fee schedule.

How to launch

  1. Confirm the product is allowed and that Etsy Payments is available where you live.
  2. Open the shop using a desktop browser.
  3. Publish one to five strong listings with original photos or accurate digital mockups.
  4. Explain materials, dimensions, delivery method, processing time, and limitations.
  5. Calculate net profit after listing, transaction, processing, materials, shipping, packaging, advertising, and refund costs.
  6. Improve listings using impressions, clicks, favorites, and sales—not likes alone.

Etsy is low-cost rather than guaranteed-free. Fees reduce margins, competition is intense, and you do not fully control the customer relationship. Keep transactions on Etsy where its seller policies require it, and use original designs rather than copyrighted or branded material.

Way 3: Use Square Free

Square’s US Free plan has no monthly subscription cost. Its online-store tools support listings, photos, descriptions, variations, and shipping, pickup, or delivery. See Square’s plans and its online-store page.

Setup steps

  1. Create a Square account and select the Free plan.
  2. Choose a single-page ordering page or a multi-page site.
  3. Add clear names, prices, photos, descriptions, variations, and stock limits.
  4. Enable payments and configure shipping, pickup, or delivery.
  5. Publish processing, shipping, cancellation, return, and damaged-order policies.
  6. Test checkout before sharing the link.
  7. Promote through your profile, email signature, local groups where allowed, QR codes, and existing customers.

Square says hardware is not required for online payments; payment links, invoices, virtual terminal, and supported tap-to-pay options may be available depending on your account, device, and country. Processing rates vary by plan, payment type, account, and date. Its US support table currently lists online or invoice payments at 3.3% + $0.30; confirm the rate shown in your account at Square’s fee page.

Square gives you more storefront control than a marketplace but no automatic audience. Some branding and domain features may require paid options.

Way 4: Use preorders or made-to-order fulfillment

With a preorder, print-on-demand arrangement, or other made-to-order model, you publish the offer first, collect an order, and use the revenue to fund production. This reduces inventory exposure; it does not remove costs or risk.

Protect your cash flow

  1. Create three to five concepts and show them to a narrowly defined audience.
  2. Look for buying signals such as deposits, waitlist signups, or paid preorders—not compliments or likes.
  3. Confirm supplier cost, minimum order quantity, production time, shipping, and return handling.
  4. Publish a realistic delivery window and contingency for delays.
  5. Collect payment only when you can deliver or refund under clearly stated terms.

Production, shipping, samples, replacements, chargebacks, and refunds may require cash. Generic dropshipping also brings quality, stock, delivery, and customer-service risks, so do not present it as effortless.

Validate demand without spending

  1. Define one audience instead of “everyone.”
  2. Message prospective buyers or conduct short conversations about the problem.
  3. Study competing marketplace listings for prices, review complaints, missing features, and customer language.
  4. Publish a sample, mockup, waitlist, or minimum viable listing.
  5. Ask for a purchase, deposit, preorder, or email signup. Payment intent is stronger evidence than engagement.

Price for profit, not revenue

Use this formula before publishing:

Net profit = selling price − product or production cost − platform fees − payment processing − shipping and packaging − refunds or replacements − tax reserve − labor value.

For example, a hypothetical $30 Etsy order must first subtract the $0.20 listing fee, 6.5% transaction fee, US processing of 3% + $0.25, materials, shipping, and any advertising before you call the remainder profit. For Square, use the fee displayed for your account and payment type rather than a generic rate.

Get the first ten customers without ads

  • Offer the product to past customers, colleagues, or personal contacts who fit the target audience.
  • Publish demonstrations, tutorials, and problem-solving videos on channels you already use.
  • Partner with a complementary local business and exchange referrals.
  • Use permitted local or interest-based groups without spamming.
  • Optimize marketplace titles, photos, descriptions, and tags around buyer language.
  • Collect email addresses from interested prospects and follow up with useful information.
  • Use referral incentives only when the reward leaves a margin.
  • Offer local pickup or a small limited drop to reduce shipping complexity.

Organic marketing costs cash but consumes time and skill. A free storefront still needs distribution.

Common failure points

  • No product or skill: begin with a service, brokerage, curation, or simple digital resource instead of inventory.
  • No audience: test on a marketplace or choose an offer with existing search demand.
  • No cash for shipping: prioritize digital delivery, pickup, services, customer-paid shipping, or properly funded preorders.
  • Too many products: start narrow so you can identify what sells.
  • Ignoring rules: check intellectual-property, consumer-protection, tax, licensing, and marketplace requirements. Etsy says a business license is not required to open a shop, but that does not override your local law.
  • Spending the first revenue: retain a reserve for fees, taxes, refunds, replacements, and chargebacks.
  • Confusing revenue with profit: subtract every fulfillment and operating cost, including your time.

When to upgrade

Do not buy a premium theme, large inventory batch, logo package, advertising campaign, or paid platform until the low-cost version produces evidence of demand. Upgrade only for a demonstrated constraint such as a custom domain, advanced analytics, automated email, inventory synchronization, higher order volume, or additional fulfillment options.

WooCommerce has free open-source core software and no platform revenue share, but hosting is additional; it currently estimates roughly $25–$350 per month for most stores, with extensions commonly costing $29–$299 per year each. Shopify offers trials and promotions, but its current US Basic plan is shown at $39 monthly or $29 monthly when billed yearly. Neither is a permanent $0 solution for a beginner without hosting or recurring budget.

A practical seven-day launch checklist

  1. Day 1: select one audience, problem, and model.
  2. Day 2: interview prospects and inspect competing offers.
  3. Day 3: create the smallest product, sample, or service package.
  4. Day 4: calculate fees, fulfillment, taxes, and a reserve; set a price.
  5. Day 5: publish one to five listings or a tested Square page.
  6. Day 6: contact prospects, partners, and existing contacts with a specific offer.
  7. Day 7: review clicks, replies, signups, and purchases; improve or stop before spending more.

The Bottom Line

The lowest-risk path is usually a digital product or service. Use Etsy when marketplace discovery matters, Square Free when you already have local or social reach, and preorders or made-to-order fulfillment only when you can meet delivery and refund obligations. Make the first sale before paying for upgrades.
