You can study Harvard’s computer science material for free by starting with CS50x 2026: Introduction to Computer Science, then choosing a specialization and building projects that show what you can do. Course access costs nothing through OpenCourseWare, and eligible learners can earn a separate free CS50 Certificate. Harvard Online also lists a $219 verified edX certificate, but paying for it is not necessary to study.
Start with CS50x 2026
CS50x is designed for majors and non-majors, with or without prior programming experience. Harvard’s CS50 course page describes it as an introduction to computer science and programming, and welcomes learners to work through its eleven weeks of material for free via OpenCourseWare.
It is a broad foundation rather than a single-language tutorial. The course moves from Scratch to C, then covers arrays, algorithms, memory, and data structures before turning to Python, SQL, artificial intelligence, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Flask. CS50 reports that two thirds of its students have never taken computer science before; that figure is from the CS50 course page for CS50x 2026.
What is free, and what costs money?
Free access to course materials and a certificate are separate questions. You can study the OpenCourseWare materials without buying a credential. CS50 also offers eligibility for its own free certificate when learners meet the course’s stated requirements. Harvard Online lists a paid verified certificate through edX as another option.

#1 Best Overall
| Route | Cost | Credential | Assessment and feedback |
|---|---|---|---|
| OpenCourseWare study | Free | No credential is specified for simply studying the materials | Work through the lectures and course materials; the course’s official workflow includes assignments and a final project |
| CS50 Certificate | Free if eligible | Free CS50 Certificate | CS50 says learners must receive at least 70% on each required problem set and lab and complete the final project to be eligible |
| Verified edX certificate | $219, the price listed by Harvard Online when accessed on October 1, 2026 | Paid, verified edX certificate | Harvard Online describes this option as including full assessed-course access; check the current listing for terms |
The free CS50 Certificate and the paid verified edX certificate are different credentials. The paid option is not a prerequisite for learning, and free audit access remains available according to Harvard Online’s course listing.
Follow a practical learning roadmap
- Work through CS50x. Watch each lecture, then use the section and shorts if they help clarify the material. Complete the problem sets and labs, and finish the final project. The course is self-paced.
- Use an edX account if you want the platform’s feedback and community features. CS50’s guidance says an account lets learners submit work for feedback and use course communities. You do not need to buy the verified certificate just to study the free materials.
- Keep evidence of what you can build. Save completed assignments and present your final project in a public portfolio. This is a practical way to make your work visible to others, not a job outcome promised by Harvard.
- Choose a specialization based on the work you want to try next. Harvard’s current free-course catalog lists further CS50 offerings in Python, artificial intelligence with Python, and cybersecurity; web programming is another direction in the CS50 course catalog.
Choose a next course by the skill you want to develop
CS50x gives you exposure to several areas. After the foundation, use a focused course to spend more time in the area that interests you rather than treating every specialization as a required step.

- Web programming: Harvard’s CS50 catalog includes a web-programming direction, building on CS50x’s HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Flask material.
These are options, not a promise that completing a particular course will qualify you for a particular role. Pick the next course according to the kind of software or technical problem you want to make projects around.
What you can take away from CS50x
- Problem-solving practice and algorithmic thinking.
- Foundations in C, memory, and data structures.
- Programming with Python and working with SQL databases.
- Exposure to AI concepts and web development with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Flask.
- A final project that can demonstrate applied work.
Can CS50 alone make you a tech professional?
CS50x is a substantial introduction, but completing it is not the same as securing a job or proving readiness for every technology role. Harvard’s course information describes the course and its requirements; it does not promise employment, a salary, or a guaranteed career outcome. Treat the course as a foundation: complete the work, use the final project to demonstrate your skills, and build further projects that fit the specialty you want to pursue.
