These are warning signs, not proof that every presale is fraudulent—but no checklist can certify an investment as safe.
Red flags that should make you stop
Guaranteed returns or little-to-no risk
Promises of guaranteed profits, unusually high returns, or little or no risk are warning signs identified by the FTC and SEC. Confident language does not remove the possibility of losing money.
Countdowns, exclusivity, and inside-information claims
“Last chance” pricing, a demand to act now, or claims that access is exclusive or based on confidential information are pressure tactics—not evidence of legitimacy. The SEC advises caution toward investment pitches on social media that offer exclusive or inside information (Social Media and Investment Fraud).
Hype in place of verifiable information
A token promoted rapidly through memes, posts, or testimonials may attract buyers without establishing what the project does or what a token holder receives. The SEC describes a pattern in which promoters tout a memecoin, sometimes calling it a “pre-sale,” to encourage buying and push up its price; promoters or associates may sell before the hype ends, and the price can then fall rapidly (SEC investor alert, May 29, 2024). This is a risk pattern, not a finding that every presale is a pump-and-dump.

Posts, testimonials, apparent account balances, endorsements, and messages from familiar accounts do not independently verify an offer. Accounts may be impersonated or compromised, and promotional materials can be misleading or fabricated. Do not base an investment decision solely on social-media claims.
Unsolicited approaches and personal trust
Be wary of a pitch that arrives through an unexpected direct message, friendship or romance approach, or a request to move the conversation to private messaging. Scammers may use personal trust and private channels to steer people toward crypto investments (FTC investment-scam guidance; SEC investor alert).

Payment to an unfamiliar crypto address
A demand to pay in crypto, especially to a wallet address supplied only in a pitch, deserves independent verification. Crypto transfers may be difficult to recover. Confirm payment instructions through a channel you find independently, rather than relying on a link or address provided by the promoter (FTC guidance on cryptocurrency and scams; SEC investor alert).
Fees to withdraw or recover funds
If a platform displays profits but demands an extra tax, fee, or deposit before allowing a withdrawal, do not send more money. The SEC warns that supposed withdrawal costs can be another demand in an investment scam. A person claiming they can recover lost crypto may also be targeting you; do not pay a recovery charge or give anyone your private key or seed phrase.

How to check a presale or promotion before paying
- Stop and slow down. Do not click a pitch link or transfer funds while someone is pressing you to act immediately. Urgency reduces the time available to check claims (FTC investment-scam guidance).
- Search independently. Search the project, company, and promoter with terms such as “review,” “scam,” “fraud,” and “complaint.” Look for consistent, attributable information outside the promotion; do not treat its testimonials as independent verification (FTC; FTC cryptocurrency guidance).
- Read the offer materials and explain the mechanics. Identify what the token is supposed to do, how the project is funded, what rights—if any—the token gives a buyer, and how a buyer might sell or exit. If important terms are unclear, jargon is not a substitute for understanding them (SEC Investor Bulletin: Initial Coin Offerings).
- Check the offeror when securities may be involved. Use Investor.gov to check a seller’s or firm’s background and registration status. Depending on the facts, an offering may need registration or a valid exemption. A claimed exemption is not a blanket endorsement, and a registration check is only one verification step—not a safety guarantee (SEC ICO bulletin; SEC social-media fraud alert).
- Verify the person and payment channel separately. If a promotion appears to come from a friend, public figure, or organization, contact them through contact details you locate independently. Do not share private keys, seed phrases, identity details, or financial-account information with a promoter.
If you have already sent funds
Do not pay another charge to unlock a balance or recover a loss, and do not share wallet credentials with someone offering recovery. Preserve messages, links, wallet addresses, and transaction details. Report suspected fraud through relevant official channels, including the SEC’s investor-alert resource and the FTC’s cryptocurrency scam guidance. Crypto recovery is difficult; no one can promise a recovery outcome.

A token offering may involve securities depending on its specific facts and circumstances. U.S. federal requirements and available remedies can vary with the offer and jurisdiction. The SEC’s ICO bulletin explains the potential application of securities laws and the registration-or-exemption framework; it does not mean every token is a security, that every unregistered offer is automatically fraudulent, or that registration guarantees a safe investment. Its investor alerts are educational guidance, not a substitute for individualized legal or investment advice.
