Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBefore connecting a wallet to a presale or giveaway, verify the exact website address through the project’s independently established official channels, then inspect every wallet request before you approve or sign it. A polished page, familiar brand, search ad, or promised free token does not prove an offer is genuine. Never enter your Secret Recovery Phrase, pay to claim a prize, or sign a request you do not understand.
Why a convincing presale or giveaway can still be a scam
A fake offer may copy a real project’s branding, imitate a familiar company, buy a promoted search placement, or appear in an article designed to look like trusted coverage. Its link may differ from the genuine address by only a small spelling or domain detail. A token may even exist on-chain; that does not establish that it belongs to the project the site claims to represent.
The usual objective is to get you to connect and then approve a token-spending request, sign a message, or submit sensitive information. The request may let a decentralized application move a particular token up to a stated limit. An unlimited allowance can expose more of that token than you intended, even if the site’s interface looks ordinary. MetaMask explains the risks of fake presales and token approvals in its guide to avoiding token presale scams and guide to approvals and permissions.
Giveaway bait can arrive in social posts, direct messages, copied or compromised accounts, or as an unexpected NFT in your wallet. The asset may carry a link or instructions promising free tokens, returns, or allowlist access. Following them can lead to a phishing site or a harmful wallet request. Treat unsolicited assets as untrusted: do not follow embedded links or instructions. MetaMask describes these risks in its scam and phishing guidance.

Another common setup claims you have won but requires you to send cryptocurrency first to release the prize. The FTC warns that a prize claim demanding cryptocurrency, a fee, or financial details is a scam. Its advice, “There is no prize,” applies to that kind of pay-to-claim demand, not to every legitimate airdrop. See the FTC’s “You’ve Won” Scams guidance.
Checks to make before connecting
Verify the exact domain independently
Do not treat an ad, search result, QR code, direct message, or link inside an unexpected NFT as proof of the official site. Navigate through project channels you locate independently, then compare the full address character by character with the link you were given. Watch for substituted letters, extra words, unusual domain endings, and lookalike social accounts. A professional design, apparent social proof, or a familiar name is not evidence that the project authorized the offer.

Look for pressure and implausible promises
Pause if a countdown, “last chance,” guaranteed return, unusually generous free reward, or urgent warning is pushing you to act. Scammers use urgency, fear of missing out, and impersonation to short-circuit checks. A deadline is not proof that an offer is real, and a promise of unusually high returns is not a reason to take extra risk.
Keep your Secret Recovery Phrase private
Do not type your Secret Recovery Phrase into a website, form, or chat, or share it with an unsolicited support agent. MetaMask says it does not give away airdrops or other assets and does not routinely need your phrase. An unexpected claim requiring it is a major warning sign. MetaMask’s wallet safety guidance explains how scammers impersonate wallet providers.

Understand the wallet request, not just the connection
Connecting a site and granting it permission are different actions. A connection prompt does not authenticate the project or establish that later requests are safe. Before approving or signing, inspect the site and contract named in the prompt, the token involved, the requested amount or spending cap, and what the request is intended to do.
Some legitimate applications request an allowance so they can handle a token, and a smaller cap may be possible. Unlimited approvals can be convenient for repeat use, but they can also give a malicious application permission to move all of that token type. Decline if the request is unclear, broader than the action you intended, or unrelated to the offer. Do not sign an unexplained message or transaction just to “verify” your wallet or claim a reward. MetaMask’s approval and permission guide describes reviewing and limiting approvals.

A quick decision check
| Compare | What to check | Pause or decline if |
|---|---|---|
| Website address | The full domain in the link against the address reached through independently located official project channels. | The spelling, domain, or source cannot be verified. |
| Project and token | The claimed sale or giveaway against announcements on the project’s established channels. | The offer appears only in a promotion, direct message, lookalike account, or unfamiliar article. |
| Wallet permission | The contract, token, cap, and intended effect against what you meant to do. | The request is unexplained, excessive, or unrelated; an unlimited allowance is not clearly needed. |
| “Free” claim | Whether the claim asks for your phrase, a payment, or a signature. | It requires a Secret Recovery Phrase, asks you to send crypto to receive a prize, or pressures you to sign something you cannot explain. |
These checks reduce avoidable risk; they cannot guarantee that a project or transaction is safe.

If you granted a token approval
If you approved a suspicious allowance but did not share your recovery phrase, use a trusted wallet interface to inspect your approvals and promptly revoke any unwanted one. Do not return to the suspected site and follow a new prompt to “undo” the action. On-chain revocation is itself a transaction and may involve network costs. Revoking an approval prevents future use of that permission; it does not reverse a transfer that has already happened.

If you exposed your Secret Recovery Phrase
Treat every account derived from that phrase as compromised. Stop using those accounts and do not add funds to them. Follow instructions from your wallet provider, reached through its official channels, to create a new recovery phrase and move any remaining assets if it is safe to do so. A hardware wallet can keep keys offline going forward, but it does not verify a presale or make a malicious site, approval, or signature safe.
Report the incident and avoid recovery scams
Use the wallet provider’s official support channel to report the incident, flag a suspicious public address with the relevant block explorer, and alert local cybercrime authorities. MetaMask says it cannot retrieve funds lost in irreversible blockchain transactions. Do not pay an unsolicited “recovery expert” or anyone who promises to recover funds for an upfront fee. MetaMask’s safety guidance includes reporting advice.
What published giveaway-scam figures do—and do not—show
A 2023 study, Understanding the Cryptocurrency Free Giveaway Scam Disseminated on Twitter Lists, reported that its system detected 95,111 giveaway-scam lists during a collection period from June 2022 to June 2023. The authors estimated USD 872,000 in losses across more than 365 tracked victims and reported that the detected lists reached more than 3.7 million Twitter users. These figures describe the study’s platform, methods, and collection period: reach does not show that every account saw or acted on a scam, and the loss estimate is not a total for all crypto giveaways or a current prevalence measure. See the study.
