How to Set UPI Transaction Limits and Disable UPI After Losing Your Phone

UPI limits may come from NPCI categories, your bank or app, or an optional customer setting. If your phone is lost, block the SIM and report it to your bank immediately.

If your phone is lost, block its registered mobile number with your operator and contact your bank immediately to report the loss and secure UPI access. There is no universal “disable all UPI” switch established across banks and apps, and a UPI PIN alone is not a substitute for reporting the loss. UPI limits also have several layers: network/category ceilings, bank or app restrictions, and any optional limit-setting control your provider may offer.

What to do first if your phone is lost

Act quickly and use only official contact channels. NPCI’s UPI FAQ advises blocking the mobile number and contacting the bank. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) directs banks offering e-banking to maintain multiple 24×7 channels for reporting loss or theft and unauthorized transactions, and to take immediate steps to prevent further unauthorized transactions after receiving a report. Keep the complaint or reference number.

  1. Block the registered number or SIM. Contact your mobile operator through its official process so the lost SIM cannot be used for calls, texts, or registration attempts.
  2. Report the loss to your bank immediately. Use an official channel available to you, such as the bank’s app, website, phone banking, IVR, email, SMS channel, or a branch. Ask for a complaint reference number.
  3. Ask the bank to secure UPI and related access. Specifically ask whether it can disable UPI for the linked account, block the lost device or session, secure debit-card access that could be used in UPI PIN resets, and advise you about active mandates. Available controls and remote procedures vary by bank; no single procedure is established for every provider.
  4. Secure each UPI app you used. Follow that app’s official lost-device process. If you can sign in from another trusted device, review linked accounts and any supported UPI-ID controls. Do not assume disabling one UPI ID disables every UPI route to the bank account.
  5. Report suspicious transactions to the bank without delay. NPCI’s complaints page directs customers with fraudulent or unidentified unauthorized transactions to raise the matter with their bank. NPCI’s portal can help with complaint or status handling, but it does not replace immediate bank reporting.
  6. Check UPI Lite separately. Ask the app provider or bank how to secure or recover the Lite balance linked to the lost device. NPCI’s UPI Lite booklet says Lite can be disabled in-app and its remaining balance returned; it does not document a universal remote recovery route for a phone that is already lost.
  7. Re-register after replacing your SIM or phone. NPCI says changing the SIM, mobile phone, or PSP application requires UPI re-registration. After setup, verify the linked bank accounts and review mandates and transaction history.

What UPI transaction limits apply?

“UPI limit” can mean a network/category ceiling, a bank or app’s own restriction, or a user-adjustable cap. The figures below are published transaction ceilings, not a promise that every bank or app will let every customer send that amount. A participating provider may impose a lower limit, and customers should verify their current limit with their own bank and app.

Transaction type Published limit Source and qualification
Normal UPI transactions Up to ₹1 lakh per transaction NPCI’s UPI FAQ, as currently stated on the page accessed in 2026; no publication date is given there.
Specified categories, including capital markets, collections, insurance, and foreign inward remittances Up to ₹2 lakh per transaction NPCI’s UPI FAQ, as currently stated on the page accessed in 2026; no publication date is given there.
IPO and Retail Direct Scheme transactions Up to ₹5 lakh per transaction NPCI’s UPI FAQ, as currently stated on the page accessed in 2026; no publication date is given there.
Tax-payment UPI transactions Raised from ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh per transaction RBI’s Statement on Developmental and Regulatory Policies, dated 8 August 2024.

How to set a UPI transaction limit

There is no universal customer-facing menu path or confirmed self-set daily ceiling across UPI apps in the official material cited here. Check the current payment or UPI settings in your bank and app for a transaction-limit control. If no such setting appears, contact the bank or app support and ask whether a customer-adjustable per-transaction or daily limit is available for your account. Do not confuse such a personal cap with the bank’s own restriction or the network/category ceiling.

What BHIM specifically documents

NPCI’s BHIM product page lists linked-account selection and the ability to set or change a UPI PIN. It also describes a profile privacy control for enabling or disabling a mobile-number UPI ID when a secondary UPI ID exists. That is a BHIM-specific, conditional UPI-ID control; it is not evidence of a universal switch that stops all UPI activity on the linked bank account.

Delegated payments are different

In its 8 August 2024 statement, RBI described delegated payments as allowing a primary user to set a UPI transaction limit for a secondary user on the primary user’s bank account. This is a limit for delegated use, not a universal self-imposed cap for the primary user, and the statement does not establish that the feature is available in every app.

What to know when replacing a phone or SIM

UPI registration is associated with the registered mobile number and device setup. NPCI’s FAQ says a change of SIM, mobile phone, or PSP application requires re-registration. Follow the new device’s official setup process and confirm which bank accounts and UPI IDs are active. Review transaction history and mandates once access is restored, particularly if you asked the bank to secure or suspend account services.
