How to Set Up Venmo for Business: A Simple Guide (2026)

Venmo’s business product is a business profile linked to your existing personal Venmo account—not a separate standalone login. It lets U.S. sole proprietors, freelancers, casual sellers, associations, clubs, and registered businesses accept customer payments under a public business name while keeping personal and business activity in separate in-app profiles.

Setup and monthly fees are $0, but Venmo deducts seller fees from eligible business payments. This guide reflects Venmo information checked August 18, 2026; fees, limits, tax rules, eligibility, and device support can change.

What a Venmo business profile does

A business profile is a customer-facing payment presence. Customers can search your business name or username, scan a business QR code, or use supported Venmo checkout options. You can add a category, description, profile and background photos, customer-facing location, phone number, website, and social links. Business and personal profiles are separate views that you switch between inside Venmo.

Venmo’s signup guidance says one personal account can create only one business profile. A registered nonprofit should investigate Venmo’s separate charity-profile option instead of assuming a standard business profile is the right product (business-profile FAQ; business profiles).

#1 Best Overall
Square Reader for magstripe (USB-C)
  • Get your money as soon as the next business day.
  • Get set up quickly with no long-term commitments. Download the Square Point of Sale app for free, create an account, and start taking payments anywhere.
  • Run your business all in one place with the free Square Point of Sale app. Track your sales, manage inventory, accept tips, send receipts digitally, and more.
  • Works with Apple devices with a Lightning connector.

Venmo may restrict or review activity under its U.S. User Agreement. A personal profile should not be used as a routine substitute for an authorized business profile when selling goods or services; see Venmo’s guidance on selling with personal profiles.

What to prepare before signing up

  • An existing Venmo account, or a mobile number for creating one.
  • Your legal name, email address, and verified phone number.
  • Business display name, desired username, category, and short description.
  • Business or mailing information plus any public address, city/state, phone, website, and social links you want displayed.
  • Profile and background images.
  • For a sole proprietor: SSN or ITIN and personal legal information.
  • For a registered entity: EIN, legal business details, physical address, and potentially beneficial-owner information.
  • Potential verification documents, such as an IRS EIN assignment letter, recent third-party-prepared business tax return, current bank statement, business license, certificate of good standing, or comparable state-registration record.

Venmo may require proof of a physical address; a PO Box alone may not satisfy that requirement (verification documents).

How to create the profile

Existing user: Venmo app

  1. Open Venmo and select the Me tab.
  2. Tap the profile or name control near the top to open the profile switcher.
  3. Choose Create a business profile or + Create a business profile. Depending on the current app version, you can also open Settings (the gear) and choose Create Business Profile.
  4. Select whether you operate with an SSN/ITIN or EIN.
  5. Enter the business name, username, category, description, address, and public contact details.
  6. Add profile and background photos, then preview the public page.
  7. Tap Publish and complete identity verification if prompted.

Labels can vary by app version. Venmo’s current instructions are at How to sign up for a business profile.

Existing user: website

Sign in at Venmo.com and select Create a business profile from the menu. Treat this as a creation route, not a promise of complete desktop administration: Venmo says profile management, identity verification, transaction viewing, and other business functions are primarily handled in the mobile app. Statements and tax documents can be viewed on the web (signup instructions; business-profile features).

New Venmo user

  1. Choose Business and tap Get started.
  2. Enter a mobile number and the verification code Venmo sends.
  3. Enter your legal name, email, and password, and accept Venmo’s terms.
  4. Continue into business-profile setup, or skip and create the profile later.
  5. Provide the requested tax, business, public-profile, and identity information.
  6. Preview and publish the profile.

Choosing “Business” does not remove the personal-account requirement; the business profile remains attached to that personal login.

Identity verification: SSN/ITIN versus EIN

Sole proprietor

Venmo generally asks for your legal name, date of birth, SSN or ITIN, and home address.

Registered business

Expect the legal business name, EIN, physical address, business identity information, and potentially beneficial-owner details.

When automated checks fail

Venmo can request supporting documents for a manual review. Verification is completed in the app, and Venmo says a profile may be unable to send, receive, or transfer money until required verification is finished. Match names, addresses, and tax identifiers exactly across your submission and documents (identity-verification FAQ; accepted documents).

  • App sends deposits to your bank account within 1 to 2 business days, or enjoy instant deposits (fees apply).

How much Venmo for business costs

The following reflects Venmo pages checked August 18, 2026. Fees are subject to change.

Activity Published fee or treatment
Account setup $0
Monthly business-profile fee $0
Direct payment to a business profile 1.9% + $0.10, generally on payments of $1 or more
Business QR-code payment 1.9% + $0.10 on Venmo’s business-profile page
Tap to Pay Venmo’s official pages conflict; verify the in-app disclosure or live fee page before relying on a rate
Customer paying with Venmo balance, bank account, debit card, or credit card Venmo says the customer does not pay a transaction fee in the ordinary business-payment flow

For a $100 direct business payment at 1.9% + $0.10, the fee is $2.00 and the business receives $98.00 before other applicable considerations. Sources: business profiles, business overview, fee table, and business transaction fees.

Why Tap to Pay needs a live check

Venmo’s business-profile page lists 2.9% + $0.09; its general fee page lists 2.29% + $0.09; and its support article lists 2.29% + $0.10. Because these official figures disagree, check the rate displayed while enabling Tap to Pay and Venmo’s current fee page.

How customers can pay

  • Search your business username in Venmo.
  • Scan a business QR code displayed or printed at checkout.
  • Use Venmo in supported online or mobile checkout integrations.
  • Use Tap to Pay for compatible contactless cards and digital wallets, where available.

Tap to Pay requires a compatible mobile device and is described as available in the United States; confirm current iPhone or Android requirements before promising contactless acceptance (accept Venmo).

Switch profiles and manage money

Switching safely

  1. Open the Me tab.
  2. Tap the profile or name control at the top.
  3. Select the personal or business profile.

Confirm the active profile before sending money, issuing a refund, changing settings, or sharing a QR code (profile FAQ).

Bank transfers and published limits

Status Weekly payment limit Weekly bank or eligible debit-card transfer limit
Before identity verification $2,499.99 $999.99
After identity verification Up to $25,000 to other Venmo users Up to $49,999.99

Venmo says a business profile has no stated limit on the amount it can receive, but payments can still be declined for reasons unrelated to the published limits. These are generally rolling weekly account limits, not guaranteed approval or guaranteed availability of funds (limits page).

Refunding a customer

  1. Switch to the business profile.
  2. Open the customer’s payment and its details.
  3. Choose Refund.
  4. Enter a full or partial amount and confirm.

Identity verification is required. Your business balance must fund the refund; a full refund requires enough to cover the original payment plus the business-profile fee. Venmo does not return the original processing fee. A refund for a payment still processing may fail until it completes, and a refund to a bank or card may take up to five business days (refund guidance).

Payment holds and delayed availability

A completed-looking payment is not always immediately spendable. Venmo may hold funds when the seller or account is new, the transaction is high-value, or activity differs from the usual pattern. For non-tax-related holds, Venmo says funds may become available within 21 days, minus applicable fees (payment holds). Keep enough balance for refunds and do not build a same-day cash-flow plan around every payment being instantly transferable.

Taxes and Form 1099-K

Venmo’s guidance dated for tax year 2025 says it will issue Form 1099-K for goods-and-services payments above $20,000 and 200 transactions, subject to lower thresholds in some states. Listed examples include Maryland, Massachusetts, and Vermont at $600, and Illinois above $1,000 with four or more transactions. These thresholds and rules can change.

Tax reporting applies to goods and services, not ordinary friends-and-family payments. If required tax information is missing, incorrect, or unverified after applicable thresholds are reached, Venmo may apply 24% backup withholding. Receiving a 1099-K does not itself determine taxable income; ask a tax professional how to report your business activity (current tax laws; tax holds).

Seller protection, disputes, and access limits

Certain purchases from business profiles may qualify for Venmo’s Purchase Program, but protection is transaction-specific—not universal chargeback protection. Buyers and businesses should generally communicate first; Tap to Pay customers may be directed to their financial institution. Review the applicable buying and selling FAQ and User Agreement.

Venmo’s business profile is tied to the creator’s personal login. Venmo states that only that individual can log in and access it; there are no normal employee logins or role-based permissions. This is a serious limitation for retail teams, restaurants, agencies, or any operation needing delegated access and an audit trail.

Is Venmo suitable for your business?

Venmo is more reasonable when… Consider a fuller processor when…
Customers already use Venmo; sales are local, mobile, appointment-based, or relationship-driven; volume is modest; QR or username payments are enough; app-centric administration is acceptable. You need point of sale, inventory, recurring billing, detailed invoices, advanced reporting, employee permissions, predictable immediate access, broad payment-method coverage, or stronger dispute workflows.

For alternatives, compare Square for in-person point of sale and employee workflows, PayPal for online payments and invoices, Stripe for websites, subscriptions, APIs, and customized checkout, and Zelle for business for bank-linked payments. Verify each provider’s current, channel-specific pricing before choosing.

Common problems and fixes

  • Create option missing: Update Venmo, switch to the personal profile, try Settings, and contact Venmo support if it remains unavailable.
  • Verification fails: Recheck exact legal name, address, SSN/ITIN/EIN, and prepare accepted documents.
  • Payment is held: Read the hold notice, submit requested tax information, and plan for a possible delay.
  • Refund unavailable: Finish identity verification and maintain enough business-profile balance.
  • Transfer declined: Check rolling limits, verification, linked-bank details, and account restrictions; the published limit is not the only possible cause.
  • Staff cannot log in: The profile is single-user under Venmo’s stated model.
  • Fee differs: Use the fee shown in the app and the live official fee page, especially for Tap to Pay.
  • Customer disputes payment: Check Purchase Program eligibility and the User Agreement; do not promise protection.

Post-setup checklist

  • Complete identity verification.
  • Link a bank account or eligible debit card.
  • Review the public name, username, category, contact details, and photos.
  • Confirm the QR code points to the business profile.
  • Run a small test payment and refund workflow.
  • Download statements and tax documents regularly.
  • Keep Venmo records aligned with your separate business bookkeeping.
  • Review current fees, limits, and tax guidance before materially increasing volume.
