Set a recurring reminder for each card on January 1, April 1, July 1, and October 1. Use it to check the issuer’s newly published categories, activate the quarter, and confirm the account shows activation. The reminder prompts you to act; it does not activate rewards for you.
Build a quarterly reminder that prompts the right action
- Create one recurring reminder per card. Set it for the first day of each calendar quarter: January 1, April 1, July 1, and October 1. A phone or digital calendar works; this is a personal workflow, not a feature guaranteed in every card account.
- Name the card and task. For example: “Freedom Flex: check categories and activate Q4.” Naming the quarter makes the task clear when it appears.
- Check the issuer’s current category calendar. Once the calendar is published, note the eligible categories, exclusions, quarterly spending cap, and activation deadline. Categories can change, so do not assume the prior quarter carries over.
- Open the card account and activate. Follow the issuer’s current instructions for that card and quarter.
- Verify activation. Look for an account status or confirmation page. If the issuer provides a confirmation email, keep it; otherwise mark the calendar task complete after checking the account. Issuers do not all promise the same confirmation method.
Activation options depend on the issuer
Chase Freedom Flex
Chase says Freedom Flex cardholders must activate each quarter. Listed options include online, in the app, by phone, in person, or by email. Check Chase’s Freedom Flex activation guidance for the current route available to your account.
Discover
Discover lists activation through its website, a one-click email, its mobile app, or by phone. The available options can change, so use the instructions in your own account and the current Discover quarterly calendar.
Use issuer alerts as a backup
Account alerts can help you monitor an account, but the reviewed alert pages do not promise a dedicated alert for quarterly category activation. Keep the calendar task unless your issuer explicitly offers and confirms such an alert.
#1 Best Overall
- For Chase, general alert setup is available in the app; alert choices vary. See Chase’s alert instructions.
- Discover offers email and text account alerts; its alert help and account-management tools explain available options.
What to check before you activate
- Categories and exclusions: A familiar-sounding merchant or purchase is not guaranteed to qualify. Merchant classification matters under the issuer’s terms.
- Quarterly cap: Check whether the cap combines multiple bonus categories and what rate applies after the cap.
- Deadline: Use the deadline for the specific quarter, not one from a past calendar.
- Transaction timing: Chase’s terms say a qualifying charge must be submitted by the quarter’s final day. See Chase’s card terms.
Examples: category calendars change by card and quarter
These are issuer-specific examples for Q4 2026, October 1 through December 31, not forecasts for later quarters.
| Card/program | Q4 2026 categories | Cap and activation detail |
|---|---|---|
| Chase Freedom Flex | Grocery stores (excluding Walmart and Target), dining, and eligible American Red Cross donations | 5% on up to $1,500 in combined quarterly bonus-category purchases when activated; Chase’s Q4 2026 announcement set December 14, 2026 as the activation deadline. Chase says an activation after the quarter begins can apply retroactively. See Chase’s Q4 2026 announcement. |
| Discover 5% program | Restaurants, entertainment, and utilities | 5% on up to $1,500 in category purchases per quarter when activated, according to Discover’s 2026 calendar: Discover’s 2026 categories. |
The different lists show why each reminder should point you to that card’s own current calendar. The caps are program terms, not estimates of what a particular household will earn; eligibility depends on the issuer’s terms, merchant classification, account status, and transaction timing.

Decide whether a mid-quarter check is worthwhile
If a card has a combined quarterly cap and you routinely use it for eligible purchases, add an optional midpoint reminder to check progress. Shift spending only when it fits your household budget. Do not make unnecessary purchases or carry a balance to earn rewards.
