There is no single parental-control switch for every AI chatbot. Set controls separately for each provider, and use your device or family-safety settings to block apps and websites that are not covered by an account-level control. For ChatGPT, a parent and teen can link accounts to manage selected settings; Microsoft Family Safety can block Copilot and selected AI sites on supported family accounts.
Choose the kind of control you need
Chatbot controls work in two different ways. Account linking lets a parent manage a specific child account’s supported settings. Device, app, and website controls restrict access on the devices and accounts where those controls are configured. Neither approach automatically supervises every chatbot a child can reach.
- Use account linking when the provider offers parent-managed settings for the teen’s account.
- Use app and website blocks when you want to restrict access to a chatbot or browser, including services without a linked-parent feature.
- Check each device, app, browser, and child account that needs the restriction. A block set in one place may not cover access through another.
Set up parental controls in ChatGPT
Either the parent or the teen can start the account link. The teen must accept the invitation before the parent can manage settings. OpenAI’s instructions are in its ChatGPT parental-controls guide.
- Parent starts the link: In ChatGPT on the web, open the profile menu, select Settings > Parental controls > Add family member, then invite the teen by phone number or email.
- Teen accepts: The teen opens the invitation link and accepts it.
- Parent opens the teen’s settings: Return to Settings > Parental controls, select the teen under Family members, and review or change the available options.
Alternatively, the teen can go to Settings > Parental controls > Invite a parent and send an invitation for the adult to accept.

What a linked parent can manage
Supported options include reducing sensitive content, whether conversations may be used to improve models, saved-memory reference, certain ChatGPT Work network and cloud-browser controls, and Quiet hours. Availability and defaults can vary; for example, saved-memory reference is enabled where available but may be off by default in some regions.
Quiet hours are set on the parental-controls page by choosing a start and end time. You can add more than one time block. ChatGPT is unavailable to the teen during those blocks, including ChatGPT Work.

What a parent can see—and what happens if the link ends
Linking does not let a parent read the teen’s conversations or chat history, or view real-time activity. Safety notifications are on by default after linking, but may take a few hours to begin. They are limited and do not include conversation transcripts.
Either person can unlink the accounts. If the teen unlinks, the parent is notified and loses the ability to manage settings or receive safety notifications. OpenAI says parental controls and teen notifications end when the account moves out of the Teen experience at age 18. Its ChatGPT for Teens resource says teens who identify as under 18 or are predicted to be under 18 by age-estimation systems are placed in ChatGPT for Teens by default; parents can link accounts to adjust features, set time limits, and customize available safeguards.

Block Copilot and selected AI sites with Microsoft Family Safety
Microsoft says parents can use Family Safety or device settings to block the Copilot app or browser, set allowed-use times, and choose which features are available, such as image generation, voice, group chat, or AI companions. Some controls require adding the child to the family group. For its blocking workflow, see Microsoft’s instructions for blocking or unblocking apps with Microsoft Family Safety.
Block the Copilot app and website
- Select the family member in Microsoft Family Safety.
- Under the child’s Windows tab, find Copilot in Apps, features, and games and choose Block app. Block relevant browsers too if you want to prevent access through them.
- Open Web safety and add copilot.microsoft.com to Blocked sites.
In the Family Safety app, select the family member and block the app. For website restrictions, go to Web and search > Content filters > Blocked sites. Microsoft lists these additional AI sites that parents may consider blocking: chat.openai.com, claude.ai, gemini.google.com, huggingface.co/chat, otter.ai, and perplexity.ai. Add only the sites you intend to restrict, and repeat the setup for each relevant app, device or platform, and family member.

Check the Copilot version and account type first
Microsoft’s “Microsoft Copilot for Young People” guidance has a version boundary: an updated app became available on August 18, 2026, and the older-app article directs people using the updated app or web experience to newer guidance. The Family Safety instructions discussed here concern personal Microsoft accounts; they do not apply to work, school, or organizational Microsoft Entra accounts. Confirm that the instructions match the app version and account you are configuring before relying on them.
Make the controls part of a family plan
Software settings can limit access or customize available features, but they do not replace conversations about how a teen should use AI. OpenAI’s parental-controls announcement quotes Robbie Torney, Senior Director of AI Programs at Common Sense Media, describing the controls as a starting point and recommending that they be combined with ongoing conversations, clear family technology rules, and active involvement in understanding a teen’s online activity. The documented workflows use accounts, existing settings, and family-safety software; no physical product is required to configure them. The instructions covered here establish setup options for ChatGPT and Microsoft Family Safety, not a universal setup method for every chatbot. Provider-specific instructions for other services should be checked with those providers rather than inferred from these steps.
