How to Set Up Monthly Bank Statements and Transaction Alerts

Choose statement delivery in your bank’s documents settings, then configure transaction alerts separately. Options vary by bank, account, and delivery method.

To set up bank statements, sign in through your bank’s official website or app and look for Statements, Documents, or Paperless. Choose eligible accounts and a delivery method. Then open the separate Alerts settings to select transaction or balance notifications, set thresholds if offered, and confirm where messages will go. The exact options and menu names depend on the bank and account.

How do I set up monthly bank statements?

  1. Open the official channel. Use your bank’s app or type its known website address yourself. Avoid signing in through links in unexpected emails or texts.
  2. Find statement delivery settings. Look for Statements, Documents, Paperless, or Delivery preferences. Labels and locations differ by bank.
  3. Choose accounts and delivery. Select each eligible account and the available delivery method. If you choose electronic statements, review the bank’s consent and service terms and make sure you can access and save the files.
  4. Verify access and contact details. Confirm the email address or other destination used for statement-ready notifications, if offered. Save the change and check that the selected accounts show the preference you intended.
  5. Check the next statement. Confirm that it is available and that you can open it. Do not assume a statement-ready notice also enables transaction alerts.

For example, Wells Fargo says eligible online documents can be accessed and printed as PDFs and describes automatic email notifications when statements become available. Chase describes statement access through its website or mobile app. These are examples, not universal menus or guarantees for every account: Wells Fargo online statements and Chase online banking.

How do I turn on transaction alerts?

Alerts are usually configured separately from statement delivery. In the bank’s app or website, find Alerts or a similarly named notification setting. Choose the accounts and alert events you want, enter a threshold when the bank offers one, select an available delivery channel, and save the settings.

Possible alert types include low balance, large transactions, account activity, or payments. Chase lists these as examples of account alerts; Bank of America’s online banking agreement distinguishes optional alerts from automatic and security alerts. Availability and whether an alert must be turned on depend on the institution and account: Chase account security features and Bank of America online banking agreement.

How do I get a text when money leaves my account?

Check whether your bank offers a transaction or account-activity alert by text for the account or card in question. If it does, choose that event, select text as the delivery method, and verify the mobile number on file. A text alert is not available for every event, account, or bank, and an alert should not be treated as a guarantee that you will be notified before a transaction settles.

Which alerts should I consider?

  • Transaction activity: Can help you notice activity you do not recognize.
  • Large transactions: If a dollar threshold is available, choose one that makes sense for how you use the account.
  • Low balance: Can flag when a balance drops below a level you select, if the bank offers that option.
  • Payments: Payment-related notices may be useful where offered.

Before enabling an alert, check what event triggers it, whether you can set a threshold, which delivery methods are supported, whether it is optional or automatic, and which accounts or cards it covers. Federal Reserve interagency guidance describes transaction alerts as automated notifications based on transaction size or risk parameters set by customers or financial institutions; it does not prescribe a personal setting or promise a particular delivery time: Federal Reserve interagency guidance.

Does a bank have to send a monthly statement?

For U.S. consumer accounts covered by Regulation E, the general rule in 12 CFR § 1005.9(b) is a periodic statement for each monthly cycle in which an electronic fund transfer occurred and at least quarterly statements when no transfer occurred. The rule says a financial institution “shall send a periodic statement for each monthly cycle in which an electronic fund transfer has occurred; and shall send a periodic statement at least quarterly if no transfer has occurred.” Coverage and exceptions matter, so this is not a rule that every account in every country must receive a monthly statement. See the CFPB’s current Regulation E text. The OCC consumer guidance, last reviewed in April 2021, gives a similar summary.

Paper or electronic statements: what should I choose?

Choose the method you can reliably access and review. Electronic statements may be available as downloadable documents, but check your bank’s eligible-account rules, retention period, and instructions for requesting paper copies. Paper statements remain an option for customers who prefer them; review them closely when they arrive. Wells Fargo says paperless documents can reduce exposure to identity theft from stolen paper documents, but that does not establish that online delivery is best for everyone: Wells Fargo identity protection information.

What to do if an alert or statement does not arrive

  • Reopen the settings and confirm that the right accounts, alert types, thresholds, and delivery destinations are selected.
  • Check whether the contact information on file is current and whether the bank lists the setting as enabled.
  • If a setting is unavailable or an account appears ineligible, contact the bank using the phone number or secure-message option in its official app or website.
  • Continue checking your account and statements rather than relying only on notifications. The CFPB advises consumers to monitor account activity, review paper statements closely if received, and report suspicious transactions promptly. Follow your provider’s official error-reporting instructions and applicable law: CFPB advice on monitoring accounts and reporting suspicious activity.
