To monitor a currency pair before exchanging, choose the pair, set a target rate in an alert service, and enable email or app notifications if offered. When an alert arrives, check the provider’s current exchange quote and fees before you exchange: an alert is not necessarily an order, and a reference mid-market rate is not a guaranteed customer rate.
What a rate alert does—and what it does not do
A rate alert watches a currency pair, such as USD/EUR or USD/JPY, and notifies you when its rate reaches a target you select. It helps you keep track without repeatedly checking a converter. It does not necessarily execute an exchange. Wise, for example, distinguishes its rate alerts from its separate app auto-convert feature, which can initiate a conversion according to your configured instructions (Wise rate alerts).
Rates can move between the notification and the moment you arrange a transfer or exchange. The rate shown for monitoring may also be a mid-market reference rate rather than the rate available for your transaction. Treat the alert as a prompt to check, not as a promise of a particular price.
Set up an alert with Xe
Xe’s help article documents a business-account workflow. Its current interface or account type may differ, so look for the equivalent rate-alert control if these labels have changed.
#1 Best Overall
- Sign in to your Xe account.
- Open Rate alerts and select the plus icon.
- Choose the currency pair you want to monitor.
- Enter your target rate, or move the alert line on the graph to set it.
- Optionally add a nickname, then create the alert.
These steps follow Xe’s documented instructions, published 28 June 2023; check the current interface for changes (Xe Help Centre: How do I set up a rate alert?).
Choose how Xe notifies you
Xe says rate alerts are available on its website and app. Its FAQ describes push notifications in the app and email notifications on the web; app notification preferences can be managed in settings. In the app, the documented route is to register, open the alert screen using the bell icon, and add a currency pair and target. Notification options and controls can vary by account and interface, so confirm them in your own settings (Xe FAQ).

Set up an alert with Wise
Wise offers free rate alerts and describes phone notifications. Its Rate Tracker uses the mid-market rate; Wise says, “Rate Tracker always shows the latest real, mid-market exchange rate,” and also warns, “Getting this rate when making a transfer with Wise isn’t guaranteed” (Wise rate alerts).
Wise also advertises app auto-convert. That is different from receiving an alert: an alert notifies you when the target condition is met, while auto-convert is a separate feature that may initiate a conversion according to the instructions you set. Review those instructions and the available options in your account before enabling it.

Choose a pair and target that match your exchange
Start with the currencies you actually expect to exchange and make sure the pair is presented in the direction you intend to monitor. USD/EUR and USD/JPY are examples, but not every service necessarily supports every pair or makes the same options available in every country or account. Confirm that your pair appears in the current interface.
Then set the threshold you want to be notified about. Check whether the service lets you enter a target directly or select it on a chart, and make sure you understand which direction of movement will trigger the alert. Xe’s documented workflow supports entering a target or moving an alert line; the available method and notification choices may differ elsewhere.

What to check when an alert arrives
- Open the exchange or transfer provider and check its live quote for your currencies and transaction amount.
- Review fees and the amount the recipient will receive, rather than relying only on the reference rate that triggered the alert.
- Confirm the rate and terms at the point you are ready to proceed; the alert may arrive after the market has moved.
- Decide whether to make the exchange yourself or, if offered and appropriate, use a separate auto-convert feature. Do not assume that setting an alert alone places an order.
Xe states that its Converter uses the mid-market rate for informational purposes and that customers will not receive that rate when sending money (Xe rate alerts). Wise likewise says its Rate Tracker rate is not guaranteed on a transfer. For either service, check the actual transaction quote before acting.

Compare alert options before relying on one
| What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Currency-pair support | Confirm that the exact pair you need is available in your current account and region. |
| Target setup | Check how to enter or select a threshold and which direction of movement triggers it. |
| Notification channel | Verify whether you can receive an app push notification, email, or both, and whether notifications are enabled. |
| Exchange quote and fees | Check the provider’s live transaction terms when you are ready to exchange; an alert rate may be a reference rather than your available rate. |
| Alert versus execution | Confirm whether you are setting a notification only or a distinct feature that can initiate a conversion. |
