Apple Cash Family is a supervised Apple Cash arrangement for family members under 18—not an independent adult bank account. It is available in the United States, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, subject to Apple’s device, account and verification requirements.
Once enabled, a child or teen can use Apple Cash for eligible Apple Pay purchases and to send or receive money. The organizer can review activity, restrict recipients, receive transaction notifications, lock the account and arrange recurring allowances. Apple’s current setup instructions are at Apple Cash Family support.
What Apple Cash Family is—and is not
Apple Cash Family lets a Family Sharing organizer manage Apple Cash for a child or teenager. The account works through Wallet, Messages and Apple Pay, with the organizer retaining oversight of the child’s Apple Cash activity.
It is not a conventional checking account, an unrestricted teen debit account or the same as an independent adult Apple Cash account. Apple Cash services are provided by Green Dot Bank; Apple and Apple Payments Services LLC are not banks. A standard individual Apple Cash account requires the user to be at least 18 and a U.S. resident. Someone under 18 uses Apple Cash through Apple Cash Family instead. See Apple’s general eligibility information at support.apple.com/apple-cash.

Check eligibility before you start
- You are the Family Sharing organizer, using the same Apple Account that established the family group.
- You already have Apple Cash set up.
- The child or teen is in your Family Sharing group and is under 18.
- Your family is in the United States, the District of Columbia or Puerto Rico.
- Each participant has a compatible iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch running the latest available version of iOS, iPadOS or watchOS.
- Each person is signed in to iCloud with their own Apple Account.
- Two-factor authentication is enabled for every participating Apple Account.
- Each device’s region is set to the United States.
Apple Account age rules vary by country or region, so do not treat “under 18” as a universal rule for every Family Sharing feature. Apple’s Family Sharing guidance is at support.apple.com/en-us/105062.
Set up Apple Cash Family from the organizer’s iPhone
- Open Settings on the Family Sharing organizer’s iPhone.
- Tap the organizer’s name at the top.
- Tap Family Sharing.
- Select the child or teen.
- Tap Apple Cash.
- Follow the onscreen instructions.
- Complete identity verification if Apple requests it.
- Return to the child’s Family Sharing profile and confirm the Apple Cash status is active rather than Pending.
Apple’s documented path starts on the organizer’s device, not the child’s. Labels can change slightly with operating-system releases; Apple’s setup page, updated February 20, 2026, uses the path above.
Set up a recurring allowance
The organizer, or a family member over 13, can schedule recurring payments for a child:
- Open Wallet on the iPhone.
- Tap the Apple Cash card.
- Tap the More button.
- Tap Apple Cash Family.
- Select the child.
- Under Recurring Payments, tap Set up for [child’s name].
- Choose the amount, start date and frequency.
- Optionally add a memo, then confirm.
This is an allowance feature, not a promise that any funding source will always work. Available funds can be affected by account limits, card eligibility, security checks and payment processing.
What a child or teen can do
Purchases and person-to-person payments
After activation, the child or teen can use Apple Cash for eligible purchases in stores, apps and websites that accept Apple Pay, and can send or receive money with people they know through Messages or Wallet. Apple may withhold features while an account is under review or missing required verification.
Children under 13
A child under 13 cannot add a debit card to Wallet for use with Apple Cash. If the child lacks an Apple Account, the organizer or a parent or guardian can create one and add the child to Family Sharing; Apple’s instructions are at Apple’s iPhone Family Sharing guide. The child may still use Apple Cash Family for eligible purchases and money transfers, but not every card-dependent feature is available.
Teens ages 13–17
At 13, an eligible teen may be able to add a supported U.S. debit or prepaid card to Wallet. Apple also sets the minimum age at 13 for transfers to or from an eligible debit card and for Instant Transfer-related functionality. Card issuer rules, identity checks, device compatibility and account status still apply; turning 13 does not guarantee approval. Current limits and eligibility are listed at Apple’s Apple Cash limits page.

When the family member turns 18
An adult who wants an independent Apple Cash account can leave Apple Cash Family. Apple says the adult will be asked to verify their identity; leaving is a transition, not an automatic conversion to a fully verified account. Details are at Apple’s identity-verification guidance.

Controls the organizer can use
- Review the child’s Apple Cash activity and transaction history.
- Receive notifications when transactions occur.
- Limit who the child can send money to.
- Lock the child’s Apple Cash account when needed.
- Create or change recurring payments.
These controls govern Apple Cash and money movement. They do not replace Screen Time, communication limits or Ask to Buy, which separately manage device use, content, communications and App Store or media purchases. Apple’s parental-control instructions are at Apple’s Screen Time guide.
Limits and fees to know
Apple lists several different limits. They apply to different actions and should not be combined into one generic “Apple Cash limit.” The figures below are from Apple’s limits page updated February 19, 2026.
| Action or balance | Current limit or fee | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Cash Family sending and receiving | Up to $2,000 | Rolling seven-day period |
| Tap to Cash | Up to $2,000 | Rolling seven-day period |
| Family member’s Apple Cash balance | Up to $4,000 | Maximum balance |
| Transfer to a debit card or bank account | Up to $2,000 per transfer | For a family member, where eligible |
| Transfers to a debit card or bank account | Up to $4,000 | Within seven days, where eligible |
| Minimum transfer | $1 | Or the full balance if it is under $1 |
| Instant Transfer | 1.7%; $0.25 minimum and $25 maximum | Apple’s stated fee for an eligible Apple Cash Family member |
Troubleshoot common setup problems
Apple Cash is missing under the child’s profile
- Confirm that you are the Family Sharing organizer, not merely a parent or guardian in the group.
- Make sure you are signed in with the Apple Account that created Family Sharing.
- Verify that the child is actually in your family group and under 18.
- Confirm that your own Apple Cash account is active.
- Update every device to the latest available operating system and check hardware compatibility.
- Check iCloud sign-in, two-factor authentication and the United States region setting for every participant.
The status says Pending
Apple’s instruction is to check whether the child meets the requirements. Recheck family membership, the child’s birth date, iCloud sign-in, two-factor authentication, U.S. region, current software and compatible hardware. Complete any identity-verification request shown to the organizer. Do not repeatedly restart setup without fixing the failed prerequisite.
If the birth date is wrong, use Apple’s correction process at support.apple.com/en-us/124146; do not invent or alter a date simply to change account classification.
Identity verification is requested or fails
The organizer may have to verify identity during family setup. If verification cannot be completed, Apple says sending and receiving money, adding money and other Apple Cash features may be unavailable. Security reviews can also delay when funds become usable, so approval is not necessarily immediate. An adult leaving Apple Cash Family has a separate identity-verification process.
The teen cannot add a card or transfer money
Under-13 users cannot add a debit card for Apple Cash. For a teen, confirm that the person is at least 13, the card is an eligible U.S. debit or prepaid card, the issuer permits the transaction and Apple Cash is not restricted or under review. Instant Transfer has the same age and eligibility dependencies.

The child is moving to another Family Sharing group
Apple says a child using Apple Cash Family must have that Apple Cash account closed before the child is transferred to another family group. Follow Apple’s guidance at support.apple.com/en-us/102634 before making the move.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Apple Cash Family a good fit?
It generally fits a family already using Apple devices and Family Sharing that wants a small, supervised spending balance, integrated Apple Pay purchases and allowances, transaction visibility and a quick way to restrict or lock access.
It may be unsuitable if the child uses Android or non-Apple devices, the family lives outside Apple Cash’s supported U.S. territories, or you need a conventional bank account, ATM access, a physical debit card or unrestricted adult features. Those are practical consequences of Apple Cash Family’s platform, geography and supervision requirements—not a substitute for comparing bank products.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a child under 13 use Apple Cash?
Yes, through Apple Cash Family if the organizer completes setup and the account passes Apple’s checks. The child cannot add a debit card to Wallet for Apple Cash.
Can a parent who is not the Family Sharing organizer enroll the child?
Apple’s Apple Cash Family setup path assigns enrollment to the Family Sharing organizer. Other adults may help with Family Sharing controls, but they should not assume they can independently activate Apple Cash.
Can I see every purchase my child makes with Apple Pay?
Apple Cash Family provides visibility into the child’s Apple Cash activity and transaction history. It does not necessarily provide a complete record of every transaction made through every other payment card in Apple Pay.

Is Apple Cash Family available outside the United States?
No. Apple currently lists availability in the United States, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
The Bottom Line
Apple Cash Family is easiest to set up when the organizer already has Apple Cash, every family member meets Apple’s account and device requirements, and the organizer completes enrollment from their own iPhone. Treat it as supervised digital spending money—not a full bank account—and verify limits, card eligibility and identity requirements before promising a child a particular feature.
