Building a puzzle vertically means assembling it on an inclined or near-vertical surface rather than flat on a table. An easel-style puzzle board is one relevant option for creating an inclined workspace.
One puzzler in a public discussion about vertical setups mentioned discomfort reaching the far-away top portion. That is an individual anecdote, not evidence that everyone finds this difficult. An adjustable angle may help you position the work to suit your space and reach.
What to check before choosing an easel
- Fit: Compare the finished puzzle dimensions with the board’s usable surface. A stated piece count does not guarantee that every puzzle with that count will fit.
- Tilt positions: Check which angles the easel supports and whether one suits your intended workspace.
- Piece retention: Look for a surface or product guidance intended to hold pieces at the angle you will use. A vertical orientation by itself does not establish that an assembled puzzle will stay together.
- Storage: If you need to put the project away between sessions, check whether the board folds or stores flat.
- Organization: See whether trays are included or whether you would need to buy them separately.
Example: Ravensburger’s Wooden Puzzle Board Easel
Ravensburger’s Ireland product listing specifies space for a 1,000-piece puzzle, a velour-finished surface intended to hold pieces in place, three tilt settings and a fourth nearly vertical setting. It says the easel folds flat and measures 75 × 53 × 6 cm. These are specifications for that listed product, not standards that apply to all puzzle easels. Ravensburger France describes an inclined, non-slip easel for vertical puzzling, saying it holds pieces in place and relieves neck strain. The same page states that the easel is made from 98% recycled materials. Those comfort and holding statements are the manufacturer’s claims, not independently established performance results. Sorting trays are optional

When comparing options, start with the finished puzzle’s dimensions and the easel’s usable area. Then compare tilt positions, the surface or guidance for keeping pieces in place, folding and storage, and whether sorting trays come with the board. The cited product pages describe different products and regions; they do not report a controlled head-to-head performance test.
