To set deposit and time limits, open your casino account’s responsible-gambling, safer-gambling, or limits settings; choose the money limit and period; add a playing-time limit or reality-check reminder if offered; then save and check when each control takes effect and resets. Menus and rules vary by operator and location. A limit can help define a boundary, but it cannot guarantee that gambling is safe or that you will stop.
Find the casino’s limit settings
Sign in and look for a section named Responsible gambling, Safer gambling, Gaming limits, or something similar. It may be under your profile, account, or preferences. If you cannot find it, search the operator’s help pages or contact support; there is no universal menu path.
For UK-licensed remote gambling, the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) requires financial-limit facilities to be accessible from registration and readily accessible from the homepage and deposit screens, or through direct links. UKGC standards also require customers to be prompted to set a limit during registration or at their first deposit or payment. These are Great Britain rules, not a description of every casino worldwide. Read the UKGC financial-limits standard.
Choose what the money limit counts
Read the label and explanation before setting a figure. Different limits measure different things:

- Gross deposits: money paid into the account during the selected period. This is the clearest choice if you want to cap how much you transfer to the casino.
- Wagers or stakes: the amount staked on play. This is not the same as the amount deposited; a balance can be wagered more than once.
- Net losses or net deposits: a measure based on money in and money out, as defined by that operator. Check what transactions count and how withdrawals affect the calculation.
In Great Britain, the UKGC’s staged rules require operators, from 30 September 2026, to offer a limit based only on the gross amount paid into the account over a set duration and to use the name “deposit limit” for that measure. The Commission says businesses may also offer other measures, such as net-deposit limits. See the UKGC implementation update. The date has passed; check the operator’s current settings and the regulator’s latest guidance if you need to confirm how a particular account is presented.
Choose the period and check how it resets
Select a period that matches the control you want. Under UKGC standards in Great Britain, operators must offer financial-limit periods of 24 hours, seven days, and one month. A monthly period is not necessarily the same as a calendar month: the operator should explain the period and reset point.

If you set limits for more than one period, they interact. Under the UKGC standard, the most restrictive combination applies, so a daily cap can prevent you from using the full amount allowed by a weekly or monthly cap. Before saving, check whether each limit resets at a fixed time or at a customer-set time, and whether the period is rolling or tied to a stated reset point. If the screen does not make this clear, ask the operator.
Set a playing-time boundary or reminder
Look for a playing-time limit, session limit, or reality check. These features do not necessarily work alike: a time limit may end or restrict a session, while a reality check may simply display a reminder after a set interval. Read the operator’s description to see what happens when the timer is reached.

For example, WSOP New Jersey describes a playing-time limit that measures time connected from login. That is an operator-specific example, not a universal definition of session time. The Malta Gaming Authority lists reality checks and time-outs among remote-gambling tools and says its remote operators must offer deposit or wagering limits and reality checks; it describes loss limits and time-outs as additional tools. Availability and behavior still depend on the market and operator. See the Malta Gaming Authority’s responsible-gaming overview and WSOP New Jersey’s limit instructions.
Save the settings and verify when they apply
- Choose the financial measure you want to control and enter a limit.
- Select the available period, then review any other limits already active on the account.
- Choose a playing-time limit or reality-check interval if the operator offers one, and read whether it blocks play or only shows a prompt.
- Save or confirm the settings. Look for a confirmation message or a displayed list of active limits.
- Check the effective date and reset details. If either is missing or unclear, ask the operator before relying on the limit.
In Great Britain, UKGC standards say requested limits should be implemented as soon as practicable and the effective time must be made clear. A customer-requested reduction should take effect immediately unless a technical failure prevents it. A requested increase cannot take effect until at least 24 hours have elapsed, and the customer must confirm it after that cooling-off period. These timing requirements apply to UKGC-regulated gambling in Great Britain; other jurisdictions may set different rules.

If you want to pause or stop
A time-out or self-exclusion is a different kind of control from a deposit or time limit. Check the operator’s responsible-gambling settings for these options and read their duration and scope. If you are trying to stop, use the relevant local self-exclusion and support services rather than relying on a limit alone.
Limits and other tools can provide useful boundaries, but they are not foolproof. The UK Government’s 2023 gambling white paper reported that UK Gambling Commission evidence found 11% of online gamblers used financial limits, 5% used time-outs, and 6% used reality checks. These are historical figures reported in 2023, not current usage rates. The paper also cautioned that no self-exclusion or gambling-cessation tool in isolation can completely prevent someone determined to gamble online from doing so.
