If you are in the United States and want to pay a friend, use a separate payment service: Meta’s documented U.S. friend-to-friend payment feature is in Messenger, not WhatsApp. WhatsApp payment options are market- and transaction-specific, with supported business checkout in India and a distinct WhatsApp money-transfer service in Brazil. Availability depends on your account and local payment partners.
Can you send money on WhatsApp?
It depends on where you live and whether you are paying a person or a business. “WhatsApp payments” is not one global wallet with the same functions everywhere. A payment option may connect to a local payment rail, a business checkout, or a payment partner—and may not appear for your account at all.
| Use case | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Pay a friend from a U.S. WhatsApp chat | Do not assume this is available. Meta documents U.S. friend-to-friend payments in Messenger, subject to eligibility, rather than an equivalent WhatsApp flow. Meta’s Messenger payment rules say the feature is mobile-only, unavailable to people in Wisconsin, and not available in group chats. |
| Pay a business in India | WhatsApp supports in-app business payment and commerce experiences using payment methods available at checkout, including supported UPI apps and debit or credit cards. Meta’s announcement describes this business-payment experience. |
| Send or receive money with family or friends in Brazil | WhatsApp has a Brazil-specific money-transfer context. Eligibility, supported partners, and controls depend on the local service; consult the option shown in your app and the provider’s instructions. Meta’s Brazil payment support page addresses WhatsApp family-and-friends transfer issues. |
| Pay a business elsewhere | A business may offer a supported WhatsApp commerce or payment integration, but that does not make WhatsApp a universal consumer wallet. Meta’s WhatsApp Business Platform materials document payment-related business APIs for supported configurations. |
Sending a payment link, account number, card detail, or photo of a check in a chat is not the same as making a WhatsApp transfer. Avoid sharing card security codes, bank passwords, one-time codes, or payment PINs in messages.
Is WhatsApp money transfer available in the U.S.?
For ordinary U.S. friend-to-friend transfers, WhatsApp is generally not the payment app to rely on. Meta’s current help page describes eligible U.S. payments between friends in Messenger, not a comparable WhatsApp consumer-transfer feature. The Messenger rules are specific: payments are mobile-only, unavailable to people located in Wisconsin, and cannot be sent or received in group chats. These Messenger rules should not be mistaken for WhatsApp features.

Meta’s Meta Pay help page explains that payment uses vary by country and service. It does not establish a universal WhatsApp person-to-person feature in the United States. WhatsApp may still be useful for discussing a payment or sharing a request, but complete the transfer in a separate service such as Zelle, Venmo, Cash App, or PayPal.
How to check whether you can pay in WhatsApp
Payment controls and labels differ by country, app version, operating system, account type, chat type, payment partner, and rollout. Check the intended chat rather than assuming that an online set of instructions matches your screen:
- Open the one-to-one chat with the intended recipient or the business checkout conversation.
- Tap the attachment or action control beside the message field.
- Look for a payment-related option. If one is not displayed, the feature may not be available for your country, account, recipient, or transaction type; there is no universal hidden menu path.
Eligibility can also depend on a supported payment method and local account requirements. Depending on the market, you may need an up-to-date supported WhatsApp app, an eligible phone number and account, a supported bank or card, identity verification, and device or transaction authentication. In India, the business checkout may offer supported UPI apps, debit or credit cards, or other displayed methods; the payment is not necessarily a transfer to an ordinary contact. In Brazil, the relevant local payment setup and recipient eligibility apply.

How to send a payment when the option is available
Use the following as a general pattern, not a guaranteed menu sequence. The exact steps and available payment methods are determined by the local WhatsApp payment flow or the business’s configured checkout.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open the eligible chat or business order and select its payment option.
- Enter the amount, or review the order total and details if you are paying a business.
- Select an eligible payment method or add one if the flow allows it.
- Check the recipient or merchant name, amount, currency, any displayed fee, and any exchange-rate information before proceeding.
- Authenticate using the requested bank verification, PIN, biometric check, or device security step. Never provide a secret PIN or one-time code to another person in chat.
- Submit the payment and wait for the payment flow to show a completed or successful status. Save its receipt or transaction reference if provided.
A chat message saying “paid,” a screenshot, or a sent payment request is not proof that funds have settled. Verify the result in the payment flow or linked account.
How to receive money on WhatsApp
Receiving a transfer may require more than having a WhatsApp account. Depending on the local service, the recipient may need to enroll, accept terms, link an eligible bank account or payment method, verify identity, or accept a pending payment. An unclaimed payment’s expiry, reversal, or pending period depends on the underlying provider; check that provider’s stated status and rules.

Confirm incoming funds in the original payment details and the linked bank or payment app. Do not rely on a sender’s screenshot or a notification forwarded in chat. Do not pay a separate “release fee” or disclose a PIN or one-time password to receive money.
How to pay a business through WhatsApp
Business checkout is different from sending cash to a friend. A business may present products or services, create an order, send payment details, and receive an order-status update through a configured payment integration. In India, Meta describes customers paying businesses within WhatsApp using supported UPI apps, debit and credit cards, and other available methods. The options shown to a particular customer depend on the checkout and account.
- Review the business identity, products or service, order total, and any applicable terms in the conversation or checkout.
- Open the payment request or order checkout supplied through the business’s supported flow.
- Choose one of the payment methods actually offered, then complete the requested authentication.
- Check the checkout or linked payment provider for confirmation and the business conversation for an order-status update.
Meta’s order-details message example illustrates a business order flow; it is not a universal consumer transfer instruction. If a seller asks you to pay a personal account instead of the business’s stated checkout, verify the request with the business through a trusted channel before sending money.

What to do if the payment option is missing
- Check whether the country and transaction type are supported; a business payment in one market does not establish friend transfers in another.
- Update WhatsApp through the official app store and reopen the intended chat.
- Confirm that the account type, recipient, and chat type are eligible for the flow. Try the relevant one-to-one conversation rather than assuming group payments are supported.
- Check whether the bank account, card, UPI setup, or payment provider is accepted by that specific checkout.
- Look for an identity, account, or payment-method verification prompt, and confirm that the phone-number region and payment account meet local requirements.
- Restart the app if needed, but first check the original chat and linked account to ensure you did not already submit a payment.
- Use WhatsApp’s in-app support or contact the bank or payment provider through its official channel for a payment-specific issue.
If the feature is unavailable where you are, use a separate transfer service. Do not install unofficial WhatsApp APKs, use a VPN to bypass payment eligibility, or give credentials to someone claiming to be WhatsApp support.
How to check whether a WhatsApp payment succeeded
- Open the payment details in the original chat or checkout and check its current status.
- Compare the transaction reference, amount, and date with the linked bank or payment-provider record.
- Confirm that the recipient’s account has actually been credited when the service provides that information.
- If the payment is pending, follow the provider’s stated processing window and check for an update before retrying.
- If you were debited but the recipient was not credited, contact the payment provider or bank using official contact details, and use the country-specific WhatsApp payment support route if relevant.
Do not send a second payment just because a chat message or notification is delayed.

There is no single cancellation rule for every WhatsApp payment, because the outcome depends on the local payment system and whether the transaction is a transfer or a merchant purchase.

- Not submitted: If you did not confirm the transaction, a payment may not have been created. Check the payment details and linked account to be sure.
- Pending: Whether it can be canceled or needs provider intervention depends on the payment partner. Use the provider’s transaction status and support instructions.
- Completed transfer: Do not assume you can cancel it unilaterally. Contact the payment provider promptly; a return may require the recipient or provider to act.
- Business purchase: Ask the merchant about its refund policy and follow the payment provider’s process for the purchase.
- Unauthorized or scam payment: Contact your bank, card issuer, or payment provider immediately and report the account in WhatsApp. Recovery is not guaranteed.
How to avoid WhatsApp payment scams
- Verify the recipient’s identity and payment details before confirming, especially if the request is urgent or the person’s number or payment instructions have changed.
- Never share a UPI PIN, card security code, banking password, or one-time password in chat. A legitimate sender does not need your secret PIN to release incoming funds.
- Check payment status in the transaction details or linked financial account; a screenshot can be forged or show a different transaction.
- Be wary of impersonation, unexpected payment requests, fake refunds, and demands for an upfront fee to receive money.
- Protect your phone with a screen lock, enable WhatsApp two-step verification, and use only the official app and support channels.
- For a suspected unauthorized transfer, contact the bank or payment provider immediately, then report and block the suspicious WhatsApp account.
Message encryption is not a guarantee that a mistaken or fraudulent payment can be reversed. Payment protection and disputes depend on the linked bank, card, payment partner, transaction type, and local rules.
Can you send money in a WhatsApp group?
Do not assume group payments are a standard WhatsApp feature. Meta explicitly says its U.S. Messenger friend-payment feature does not work in group chats, but that is a Messenger rule, not proof of an identical WhatsApp rule. For shared expenses, use a one-to-one request or a separate payment app whose group-payment features are clearly available to you.
Alternatives for U.S. friend-to-friend transfers
If you are in the U.S. and need to pay a friend, compare services based on whether both people can use them, how they connect to a bank, transfer speed, fees, limits, and dispute protections. These details vary, so check the provider and your financial institution before sending.
| Service | Potential fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Zelle | Bank-to-bank transfers when your bank or credit union supports it. | Participating institution availability and that institution’s limits and terms. |
| Venmo | Peer-to-peer payments and requests through separate Venmo accounts. | Account eligibility, fees, transfer timing, and protections. |
| Cash App | Peer-to-peer payments through a separate account and app. | Account and feature eligibility, fees, transfer timing, and protections. |
| PayPal | Person-to-person and merchant payments through a separate service. | Fees, currency conversion, holds, and the applicable dispute rules. |
None of these transfers happens inside WhatsApp. Confirm the recipient in the payment service itself, and use the service’s own transaction history and support for problems.
