How to Send an International Remittance with XRP: Steps, Fees, and Risks

An XRP Ledger payment moves XRP between accounts, but an international remittance also requires a supported way to acquire XRP and convert or spend it at the recipient’s end.

You can send XRP internationally by transferring it between XRP Ledger accounts, but that transfer alone does not deliver local currency. Before buying XRP, confirm that the sender can acquire and withdraw it on XRPL Mainnet and that the recipient has a supported way to convert or spend it. The right route, providers, and total cost depend on the countries involved.

What an XRP remittance does—and does not—do

A direct XRP Ledger payment moves XRP from one ledger account to another. It does not automatically convert XRP into the recipient’s local currency or guarantee a cash payout. A usable remittance route therefore has three parts: getting XRP to the sender, transferring it on the ledger, and converting or spending it at the recipient’s end.

Because no sender or recipient country is specified, there is no verified provider list, cash-out route, or corridor-specific price to give here. Availability and practical steps must be checked for the actual countries.

How to send XRP, step by step

  1. Check the whole route before buying

Confirm that the sender can legally and practically acquire XRP and withdraw it on XRP Ledger Mainnet. Separately confirm that the recipient can receive XRP at the intended destination and convert it or spend it. A successful ledger transfer is not useful as a remittance if the recipient has no workable way to access the value.

  2. Set up an XRPL account

Choose a wallet that lets you interact with the XRP Ledger and manage the funds. An XRPL account must meet the ledger’s minimum reserve requirement to become active; check the current requirement and the wallet’s instructions before funding. A wallet may not sell XRP, in which case the sender needs an exchange or another source to acquire and fund the account. No particular wallet or exchange is endorsed here.

  3. Get the recipient’s address and confirm the network

Ask the recipient to provide the exact XRPL destination address. If withdrawing from a provider, select XRP Ledger Mainnet—not a similarly named network—and follow any instructions shown for that withdrawal. Check the destination carefully before proceeding: a direct payment sends XRP to an XRP Ledger account, and an incorrect address or network selection can prevent the intended recipient from receiving it.

  4. Review the payment and fee before signing

Enter the recipient’s address and the XRP amount in the wallet, then review the transaction details. XRP Ledger documentation lists a 10-drop standard minimum transaction cost before load scaling. The protocol destroys this transaction cost; it is not a payment to an intermediary, and it can rise when the network is under load. Check the current fee immediately before signing. The signed transaction’s Fee cannot be changed without invalidating its signature.

  5. Submit and verify both sides of the transfer

XRPL documentation says a direct XRP payment typically completes in eight seconds or less. That figure describes the ledger payment, not the time to buy XRP, withdraw it from a provider, convert it, or make local currency available. Check the final ledger result, then have the recipient confirm receipt and, if relevant, confirm the conversion or payout with the service handling it.

Which fees affect the recipient’s final amount?

The XRPL transaction cost is only one possible cost in the route. The sender’s total payment and the recipient’s net amount can also be affected by provider charges, exchange rates, and price movement while XRP is held or transferred.

Cost or factor Where it can arise What to check
XRPL transaction cost When the ledger payment is submitted The current fee shown before signing; the standard minimum is 10 drops before load scaling, according to XRP Ledger documentation accessed October 4, 2026.
Acquisition cost When the sender obtains XRP Any trading fee or difference between the quoted fiat-to-XRP rate and the effective rate.
Deposit or withdrawal charges At the service used to fund or withdraw XRP Whether the provider charges for the relevant funding method or XRPL Mainnet withdrawal.
Exchange-rate movement Between buying XRP and converting or selling it How a change in XRP’s fiat value could affect the recipient’s local-currency amount.
Conversion and payout costs When XRP is exchanged or local currency is paid out The conversion rate, any spread or payout charge, and the amount the recipient will actually receive.

The cited materials do not establish current provider prices, so they cannot support an all-in cost estimate or a claim that XRP is cheaper on a particular corridor. Compare live quotes for the same sender amount and recipient currency, including the net amount the recipient gets—not just the ledger fee.

For covered U.S. remittance transfers, the CFPB compliance guide describes disclosure categories that can help with this comparison: amount paid, provider fees and taxes, exchange rate, amount in the recipient’s currency, and certain covered third-party fees. Which disclosures apply depends on the transfer and provider; this is not a universal statement about every country or XRP route.

Direct XRP transfer versus cross-currency payment

Route What is sent and delivered on-ledger Key condition
Direct XRP payment XRP is sent to an XRP Ledger destination account. The sender needs a funded account, a valid signed transaction, sufficient balance, and the correct destination.
Cross-currency XRPL payment The sender can offer one currency while the ledger delivers another; at least one side must be a non-XRP token. A viable path and enough liquidity must be available. This does not itself guarantee that an external provider will pay out local fiat.

XRPL pathfinding may use order books and automated market makers; XRP can serve as a bridge between two tokens when that route reduces cost. Paths and their costs can change before execution. Liquidity, exchange rates, automated-market-maker fees, and token issuer transfer fees can affect the amount required. The Payment reference describes SendMax as a way to cap the source amount, including relevant fees, exchange rates, and slippage, for cross-currency payments. Review the route and source-amount limit before signing.

XRPL documentation describes cross-currency payments as atomic: the on-ledger payment either executes fully or does not execute. That property does not extend to an off-ledger exchange, cash-out, or payout service.

Risks to check before sending

  • Price movement: XRP’s fiat value can change between acquisition and conversion, affecting the local-currency amount ultimately available.
  • Destination or network error: Confirm the address and make sure any provider withdrawal is set to XRPL Mainnet.
  • Changing path or inadequate liquidity: A cross-currency route may fail if liquidity is insufficient, and its cost may change between pathfinding and execution.
  • Unconfirmed cash-out: Ledger settlement does not establish that the recipient can exchange XRP or receive local currency through a particular service.
  • Unclear legal or consumer-protection coverage: CFPB materials address U.S. remittance disclosures and market context; they do not establish availability, legal treatment, or protections for every provider, corridor, or jurisdiction.

How to compare XRP with another remittance route

For the same sender amount and recipient country, compare the actual outcome using these checks:

  • Total amount the sender pays, including acquisition and transfer charges.
  • Exchange rate used at each conversion stage.
  • Recipient’s final amount in local currency after fees.
  • Time until funds are spendable or available for payout, not just ledger settlement time.
  • Whether the recipient can reliably access the funds through the proposed cash-out or spending route.

Do not compare the XRPL base transaction cost alone with the advertised price of a conventional transfer. The relevant comparison is the complete route and the recipient’s net, usable amount.
