To send an international remittance with a crypto payment app, first confirm that it supports your sending country, your recipient’s country and the recipient’s preferred way to receive the money. Then check the complete route—funding, crypto transfer, any conversion and the final payout—before authorizing it. A blockchain transfer alone does not guarantee that your recipient can turn the crypto into usable local currency.
First, make sure the recipient can use what you send
A crypto remittance can end in different ways: the recipient may receive crypto in a compatible wallet, or an app or intermediary may convert it and pay out local currency to a bank account or in cash. These routes can involve different providers and separate on-ramps and off-ramps. The Bank for International Settlements describes arrangements that may include sender funding through a service, a recipient wallet, or an intermediary that disburses cash or credits an account (BIS, 2023).
- Ask the recipient whether they want crypto or local currency, and whether they can receive crypto themselves.
- If they will receive crypto, confirm the exact asset and network their wallet supports. A wallet that accepts one asset or network may not accept another.
- If they need local currency, verify that the app or a supported intermediary offers conversion and payout in their country, using the recipient’s preferred method.
Do not assume that an app supports a particular country pair or payout method just because it offers crypto transfers. Availability is specific to the provider, corridor and current terms.
How to send the remittance
- Check the route in the app. Confirm that both your location and the destination country are eligible. Review the app’s current identity and account requirements, supported assets and networks, transaction limits, funding methods and destination payout options.
- Choose the recipient’s end point. Establish whether the recipient will receive crypto, a bank deposit or cash. For a crypto payout, get the recipient’s wallet details and verify that the asset and network match. For local currency, confirm the conversion and payout route before sending.
- Review the full quote. Check the amount you will fund, any purchase or funding charge, app fees, network fees if charged, the exchange rate, and any conversion, withdrawal or payout costs shown. Focus on the amount the recipient is expected to receive in a form they can use, not only the sender-side fee.
- Verify the details before authorizing. Compare the recipient’s address, asset and network—or the bank or cash-payout details—with the app’s instructions and the recipient’s information. Follow the selected app’s current steps; there is no universal address-recovery process established for crypto transfers.
- Keep the confirmation and track the payout. Save the receipt and transaction details, then follow the app’s status for the complete route. A blockchain confirmation does not by itself establish that a local-currency conversion or payout is complete.
How to compare the true cost and delivery
Compare the entire path from your payment method to the recipient’s usable funds. A transfer advertised as “free” or “no fee” may still involve costs through the exchange rate, conversion or withdrawal. The CFPB warns that misleading marketing about remittance speed or cost may violate the Consumer Financial Protection Act (CFPB Circular 2024-02, March 27, 2024).

- Recipient proceeds: What amount of local currency or usable crypto is expected after applicable charges?
- All costs: Include funding or purchase, provider, network, exchange-rate spread, conversion, withdrawal, payout and any recipient-side charges shown. Recipient-bank fees or foreign taxes may also affect the final amount.
- Delivery estimate: Check the estimate for the final usable payout, not just the crypto network transfer.
- Route and limits: Compare supported countries, payout methods, assets and networks, account requirements and transaction limits.
- Problem handling: Find the receipt, cancellation terms, error-reporting process and support contact before sending.
For covered US remittance transfers, CFPB guidance identifies the amount funded, provider fees and taxes, exchange rate, covered third-party fees and expected amount in recipient currency as relevant pre-payment information. It also addresses availability, cancellation and error information (CFPB consumer guide; CFPB guide to sending money abroad). Those disclosures do not make every crypto-app arrangement a covered remittance transfer.
What to do if a transfer is delayed or wrong
Use the app’s receipt and transaction details to contact the provider or payout intermediary, and follow its current process for reporting an error or delay. Keep the recipient’s information and any status updates. If a covered US remittance transfer is involved, CFPB consumer guidance explains that consumers generally receive information about when funds will be available and how to raise an error or cancellation request. Coverage depends on the transaction and provider, so do not assume the same rights apply to every crypto-app transfer (CFPB: What is a remittance transfer and what are my rights?).

What US rules do—and do not—tell you
US remittance-transfer protections apply only when the transaction and provider meet the relevant coverage requirements. Separately, FinCEN’s 2013 interpretive guidance says a person using virtual currency is not a money services business solely by being a user; an administrator or exchanger may be treated as a money transmitter unless an exception or limitation applies. That activity-specific federal guidance is not a determination about a particular app and does not settle state or foreign-law requirements (FinCEN guidance, March 18, 2013).
