What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Use one cross-device bookmark manager as your library, and choose it based on what you need to retrieve: Raindrop.io is suited to organizing links and mixed media, while wallabag is a better fit for a reading-focused article archive you can self-host. The key distinction is that saving a bookmark stores a pointer; saving an archive copy or uploading a media file is a different capability, and coverage depends on the service and plan.
Choose a library for the job you need it to do
Before moving your saves, decide whether the library is mainly for reference links, visual media, or articles you intend to read. A single primary tool is easier to maintain than scattering items across browser folders, email, and chat.
- Links and mixed media: Raindrop.io describes collections, tags, filters, article and video previews, and image, video, and PDF uploads. Its homepage also describes browser, desktop, and mobile access. These are vendor-described capabilities, not independent test results. Raindrop.io
- Reading articles later: wallabag extracts article content into a reading-focused experience and offers browser, phone, RSS, and e-reader workflows. It can be self-hosted or used as a hosted service. Check offline behavior for the client and setup you use. wallabag
- A visual collection of varied items: Recollect describes saving links, images, videos, and documents, and says it recognizes text in images. Confirm whether a particular item is a stored file, a link, or a preview before relying on it as an archive. Recollect
These services are not interchangeable in every workflow: a clean article-reading archive is different from a broader bookmark library that also organizes media.
Understand what “save” means for each item
A saved link is usually a pointer to a page or media item hosted elsewhere. It does not by itself guarantee that the original will remain available. An archive copy, extracted article text, preview, and uploaded file are distinct forms of saving.

- Webpage: Raindrop.io describes automatic copies of webpages and files, with permanent copies listed as a Pro feature. Verify which content types and plan cover the pages you care about. An archive may not preserve every dynamic or access-restricted page.
- Image or video: A service may save a URL or preview rather than the original media file. Raindrop.io lists image and video uploads and video viewing in its library; Recollect lists images and videos among the kinds of items it can save. Check the item-level behavior before assuming the source file is stored.
- Article: A reading service such as wallabag extracts article content for later reading; that is not the same thing as a permanent copy of the entire original website.
Raindrop.io says its saved web pages, PDFs, and YouTube videos are searchable down to spoken words; its FAQ places full-text search in Pro. Treat this as the provider’s description of its feature, not a guarantee that every page or video will be indexed identically. Raindrop.io Raindrop.io FAQ
Set up a simple capture and retrieval workflow
- Choose one primary library based on whether you mostly save references, mixed media, or articles for reading. Review its current platform and plan details before committing.
- Enable capture on the devices you use. Install the browser extension and mobile app or share workflow where offered. Then save one item and check that it appears on another device; this is a practical setup check, not a claim that syncing has been independently tested here.
- Test different kinds of saves. Add one ordinary URL, one article, one image or screenshot, and one video. For each, confirm whether the library stored a link, preview, extracted text, archive copy, or uploaded file.
- Begin with a small structure. Create an Inbox and a few collections such as Read, Watch, Reference, and Projects. Add tags only when they answer a recurring retrieval question; excessive categories can make saving slower without making finding easier.
- Check archive, export, and backup options for important references. Raindrop.io describes import/export and automatic copies; wallabag offers imports and self-hosting. No archive or export should be assumed to capture every dynamic or access-restricted page.
- Review the library occasionally. Remove duplicates or dead links if your chosen service supports those actions, and move saved items out of the Inbox when you have decided where they belong.

Product descriptions and feature tiers can change, and the comparison is not a reliability or performance test. Check the providers’ current pages before choosing a plan or relying on a particular capability.

Check device support and service status
Raindrop.io’s download page listed iOS 17.4 or later, Android 7.0 or later, macOS Monterey 12 or later, and Windows 10 or later when checked in 2026. Minimum requirements and availability can change, so confirm them for your device on the Raindrop.io download page. The provider says its free use includes unlimited bookmarks, collections, and devices; it lists full-text search, permanent copies, more upload space, cloud backup, and cleanup tools among Pro features. Review the current plan details in the Raindrop.io FAQ rather than relying on an old feature or price description.
Pocket is not a current option for a new library: Mozilla says it shut down on July 8, 2025. Mozilla’s notice also says Firefox integration removal began with Firefox 140 and ESR versions 115 and 128. The support page is marked unmaintained, so use it for the shutdown notice rather than its legacy setup instructions. Mozilla Support: The future of Pocket
