Memorial Day 2026 prices are historical, not a forecast: AAA reported an average of $4.56 per gallon for regular gasoline on May 21, 2026. Prices and offers for a future holiday may be different.
Start by comparing prices along your route
A lower price at a station across town may not be a better deal once you account for extra miles, time and fuel used to reach it. Check prices near your route and compare the total trip cost, not just the sign at the pump.
AAA recommends its Mobile app and TripTik for looking up fuel prices while planning a route. Treat app listings as a guide: a displayed price may not reflect the amount currently posted at every station.
For a simple comparison, multiply the gallons you expect to buy by the price difference. Then subtract any added detour cost. If the detour is likely to cost more in fuel or time than the price difference saves, stay on your route.

Check station loyalty programs for usable discounts
A loyalty offer can lower the pump price, but its headline discount matters only if you meet its eligibility requirements and can use it at a participating station on your route.
What the 2026 AAA-Shell offer included
In guidance published in 2026, AAA described an offer for eligible AAA members joining Shell Fuel Rewards: 30 cents per gallon off the first fill-up after joining, followed by 5 cents per gallon on later fills at participating Shell stations. AAA Auto Club Group’s June 10, 2026 guide said the discount was limited to up to 20 gallons per fill-up. These are dated offer details, not a promise that the promotion is still available or will return for another Memorial Day. Check the current terms, eligibility, participating locations and gallon limit before relying on it.

Calculate the discount only on the gallons and price eligible under the offer. If a membership or other fee is required, subtract that cost to see whether the offer is worthwhile for your trip.
Use credit-card gas rewards carefully
Before applying for a new card, check the card already in your wallet. Look up its current gas earn rate, any spending cap, exclusions and redemption rules. A rewards rate is not enough to determine the best stop: a station with a higher pump price can still cost more after rewards.

Rewards terms may change or include conditions that are easy to miss. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has identified concerns such as rewards losing value, unclear or buried conditions, and points being deducted without the promised redemption benefit. Read the specific program terms and compare the value you can actually redeem with the discount at the pump.
Do not treat card rewards as savings if interest or fees erase the benefit. The CFPB explains that when a card has a grace period, paying the statement balance in full by the due date can avoid interest on purchases; your card agreement controls whether a grace period applies and how it works. Account for any relevant fee when estimating the net value of rewards.

Compare the net savings before combining offers
For a station discount, estimate eligible gallons multiplied by the difference between the regular pump price and the discounted price, then subtract any membership fee or added detour cost. For a card, estimate the rewards value on that transaction under the card’s current terms, then subtract relevant fees or interest.
Do not assume station rewards, card rewards and app offers can be stacked. Check the current rules for each program and confirm that the specific station and transaction qualify. A useful comparison is the net amount you will actually save, not the biggest advertised cents-per-gallon figure.

Make fuel-saving plans without compromising safety
AAA advises travelers not to delay vehicle maintenance or stretch a tank too far to save money. Check tire pressure before leaving and follow the vehicle manufacturer’s guidance. AAA’s cited advice supports checking pressure, but it does not quantify how much fuel correcting pressure saves; do not count on a specific savings amount.
For context, AAA projected 45 million travelers, including 39.1 million by car, for May 21–25, 2026, which it described as a record Memorial Day travel forecast. That forecast and the holiday prices reported for 2026 describe a past holiday, not conditions for a future one. Check current route prices and program terms close to your travel dates.
