These steps can reduce wasted fuel, but the amount depends on your vehicle, route and driving conditions. The price-finding guidance below is specific to the UK.
Use less fuel on each journey
Fuel economy is affected by how you drive and what your vehicle carries. Favour steady acceleration and braking, use a suitable gear, and avoid carrying items or roof equipment you do not need. Combine errands where practical, or make fewer, better-planned trips. The Department for Transport’s MoneyHelper guidance and the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) recommend these measures, while noting that road conditions and the vehicle matter.
Drive smoothly and choose a safe speed
Look ahead to anticipate traffic so you can ease off rather than brake sharply and accelerate again. Change up when the engine can comfortably take a higher gear, as the VCA advises; do not force a high gear if it makes the vehicle struggle. Keep within speed limits and adapt to traffic, weather and visibility. Slower is not automatically safer or more economical in every situation.
MoneyHelper reports an Energy Saving Trust estimate that driving at 50 mph rather than 70 mph can reduce fuel consumption by 15%. Treat that as an estimate, not a guaranteed saving for your car or journey. Do not travel at an unsafe or illegal speed to pursue it.

Avoid unnecessary idling and weight
If your vehicle has stop-start, use it as intended. The VCA advises driving off soon after starting rather than idling to warm the engine. Remove heavy items you do not need, and take off roof bars or a roof box when they are not in use.
The VCA says a roof box can add around 22% to fuel consumption at 62 mph and around 39% at 75 mph; it reports that empty roof bars can add around 7% at motorway speeds. These figures are tied to the stated speeds and equipment, and should not be treated as predictions for every vehicle.

Check tyre pressures against the vehicle specification
Use the pressure specified by the vehicle maker, usually shown in the handbook or on a placard on the car. Check tyres regularly and before a long trip; use the recommended cold pressure and do not inflate above the specified figure. Under-inflation increases rolling resistance and fuel use, and correct pressure also supports tyre life.
A service-station gauge may be enough; a portable gauge is optional if you prefer to check at home. The potential benefit comes from correcting pressure, not from buying a particular gauge.

Compare pump prices without wasting fuel on a detour
Prices can differ between nearby stations, and the Competition and Markets Authority says prices tend to be lower where stations compete. For UK motorists, Fuel Finder data is distributed through third-party apps and websites. Compare prices for the fuel type you need, check when the price was reported, and consider whether the station fits a journey you already plan to make.
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero says stations must report price changes within 30 minutes. Its 2026 Fuel Finder factsheet estimates an average saving of £40 a year for car-owning households. That is a government estimate, not a guaranteed saving for an individual driver.
Rank #4
MoneyHelper suggests avoiding a round-trip detour of more than 2 miles to save 1p per litre. Use that as a rule of thumb, not a universal break-even calculation: the result depends on how much fuel you buy, your car’s consumption and the diversion route. A small pump-price difference can disappear if reaching the cheaper station burns extra fuel.

For petrol vehicles in the UK, government guidance says E10 may deliver around 1% lower fuel economy than E5. It also notes that driving style, under-inflated tyres and roof racks can have a greater effect. Check that your vehicle is approved for E10, particularly if it is an older petrol model. This E10 guidance does not apply to diesel.
Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
The cited guidance does not establish that premium petrol, fuel additives or a different diesel grade will save money. Do not pay more for them on the assumption that they will improve economy.
A practical order for tackling a fuel-price rise
- Before the next journey: remove unnecessary loads and roof equipment, and combine errands where practical.
- At your next pressure check: set tyres to the vehicle maker’s recommended cold pressure.
- On the road: accelerate and brake smoothly, choose a suitable gear and drive at a safe, legal speed.
- Before refuelling: compare current nearby prices for the correct fuel, then account for any detour.
- When choosing petrol: check E10 compatibility rather than assuming a more expensive fuel will save money.
If driving less is not realistic, focus on actions you can repeat without compromising safety: a smoother driving style, correct tyre pressure, removing unused roof equipment and choosing a competitively priced station that is already convenient.
