How to Reverse GST Input Tax Credit and Reconcile It in Your Returns

Classify a GST ITC reversal as permanent or potentially reclaimable, report it in the appropriate GSTR-3B Table 4 field, and reconcile it against GSTR-2B and annual return records.

To reverse Indian GST input tax credit (ITC), first identify why the credit must be reversed and whether it may be reclaimed later. Under the revised GSTR-3B Table 4 format, generally applicable from the August 2022 return period, CBIC guidance places specified permanent reversals in Table 4(B)(1), while certain conditional reversals go in Table 4(B)(2). Eligible later reclaims are reported in Table 4(A)(5) and disclosed in Table 4(D)(1). Then reconcile the entries against GSTR-2B, your supporting records and the applicable annual return instructions.

Classify the reversal before entering it

There is no single reporting treatment for every ITC adjustment. The reason for the reversal and the governing provision determine whether the credit is permanently unavailable or may become claimable after a specified condition is met. CBIC Circular 170/02/2022-GST describes examples, but those examples should not be treated as an exhaustive list of all situations. Review the facts, applicable provision and rules before filing.

The circular distinguishes specified permanent reversals—including cited reversals under Rules 38, 42 and 43 and ineligible credit under section 17(5)—from certain reversals that may be reclaimed when conditions are later fulfilled, including Rule 37 and the cited section 16(2) situations. See the CBIC circular and CBIC ITC Rules.

Use the correct GSTR-3B Table 4 field

The GST Portal’s revised Table 4 format has applied from the August 2022 return period. The portal advisory says the revised format does not apply to periods before August 2022, so check the relevant form instructions rather than applying current field labels retrospectively. The revised layout shows available ITC in Table 4(A), reversals in 4(B), and net ITC in 4(C), calculated as 4(A) minus 4(B). The advisory also notes that prefilled entries may need editing to reflect correct self-assessed reporting.

Situation GSTR-3B treatment described in official guidance What to check
Specified permanent reversal, including the cited Rule 38, 42 or 43 items and section 17(5) ineligible ITC Table 4(B)(1) Verify the legal basis and reporting format for the tax period.
Reversal that may be reclaimed after prescribed conditions are met, such as examples cited in the circular Table 4(B)(2) Record the original reversal and the later event that permits reclaim.
Qualifying reclaim of an amount previously reversed in 4(B)(2) Table 4(A)(5), with the reclaimed amount disclosed in 4(D)(1) Confirm that the relevant condition has been met before reclaiming.
Net ITC after reported reversals in the revised format Table 4(C) = 4(A) − 4(B) Check the calculation against the entries reported in 4(A) and 4(B).
ITC unavailable for specified reasons reflected in GSTR-2B Review the relevant 4(D)(2) treatment in the portal guidance Check whether the amount was included in 4(A) before making an adjustment; avoid reversing credit that was never availed.

These field descriptions are drawn from CBIC Circular 170/02/2022-GST and the GST Portal Table 4 advisory. For unavailable-credit and statement details, consult the GST Portal GSTR-2B FAQ.

Reconcile the reversal and any later reclaim

Use a working record that links the original credit, the reason and amount reversed, the return period and field used, and any later event that supports a reclaim. This is a practical way to maintain a traceable reconciliation; it is not a separate recordkeeping rule quoted from the cited guidance.

  • Check that the same reversal has not already been recorded in source data or a prior return adjustment.
  • Match the reason and tax head—IGST, CGST, SGST/UTGST or cess, as applicable—to the return figures and supporting records.
  • Keep permanent reversals distinct from conditional ones so that a possible reclaim is neither lost nor claimed before its condition is fulfilled.
  • Compare GSTR-2B with GSTR-3B for the relevant period, investigate differences, and assess legal eligibility separately. GSTR-2B supports the reconciliation but does not by itself settle every eligibility question.

The GST Portal FAQ also describes items reported separately and reverse-charge credit entry after payment of tax. Use those details when checking whether a difference reflects a reporting category or an eligibility issue, rather than assuming every difference calls for an additional reversal.

Carry the adjustment into the annual return

Reconcile periodic ITC figures, reversals and reclaims with the annual return for the correct financial year. The cited CBIC GSTR-9 instructions say the difference in the described reconciliation row should ideally be zero. Check the instructions and form version applicable to that year; the relevant instructions appear in the CBIC CGST Rules and Forms PDF.

Check the rules for the exact filing period

The central circular and revised Table 4 advisory cited here date from 2022. Rules, forms and portal behavior can change, and the correct treatment depends on the transaction and tax period. Before filing, check current CBIC notifications and GST Portal instructions for that period. A taxpayer-specific determination requires the relevant invoices, records and facts; consult a qualified GST professional if you need help assessing eligibility or preparing a return.
