Protecting greenhouse crops during a heating or cooling failure starts before the failure: map the systems each crop zone depends on, arrange safe backup heat and power, and test alarms and response steps. During an outage, verify conditions at crop level, follow the site plan, and prioritize restoring the failed system. Ventilation and shade can help during heat emergencies, but neither guarantees crop-safe temperatures.

Why a greenhouse outage can affect more than one system

Heating and cooling equipment often depend on electricity, as may fans, water pumps, controls, and inflation equipment. A power failure can therefore interrupt several protections at once. UF/IFAS notes that outages can cause production losses and damage plant material, but the impact depends on the greenhouse and crops served.

Start by mapping dependencies by crop zone rather than treating the greenhouse as one uniform space. Record which equipment protects each zone and which loads are essential to protect crops or the structure.

  • Heat sources and their controls
  • Ventilation fans, vents, and evaporative-cooling pumps or pads
  • Irrigation and water pumps
  • Inflation fans and environmental controls
  • Power, fuel, and monitoring dependencies for each item

UF/IFAS’s Auxiliary Power Units For Greenhouse Operations discusses electricity-dependent greenhouse needs and selecting auxiliary power. Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation likewise recommends planning backup electrical capacity around critical equipment in its Best Management Practices for Energy, Water & Waste in Alberta Greenhouses.

Prepare a written plan before an outage

Set responsibilities and escalation contacts

Write down who checks alarms, who can operate equipment, and who has authority to call for repairs or emergency support. Include an equipment technician, fuel supplier, generator support, and—if relevant—a source for rental emergency heating equipment. Alberta’s guidance specifically recommends planning for complete heat failure and keeping rental-equipment contacts available.

Make the plan usable under pressure: identify the location of controls, safe manual operating instructions, and the process for reaching staff if the normal communications or power path is down.

Install and test temperature and power alerts

Use alarms that can signal both temperature excursions and power failure. UGA Cooperative Extension recommends a warning device for heating malfunction or power failure and mentions battery-powered alarms; Alabama Cooperative Extension recommends an emergency call system that monitors outages and indoor temperatures.

Test the full alert path, not just the sensor: confirm backup power, communications coverage, recipient contact details, and that someone receives and acknowledges a test. Place sensors where readings represent crop conditions in the zones that matter. The controller’s display is useful, but an alarm does not prove that every zone is at the same temperature.

Size backup power for actual critical loads

A standby generator should be selected for the equipment the plan says must keep running—not for an arbitrary greenhouse size or a rule-of-thumb wattage. List the critical loads, including their starting and running demands, and have a qualified electrical professional assess sizing, transfer arrangements, and installation. Motors such as fans and pumps may have starting demands that differ from their normal running load.

Check that the planned generator can support the necessary combination of controls, fans, pumps, and heat-related equipment under the intended operating conditions. Confirm fuel availability and a practical way to operate and test the equipment before an emergency. NC State Extension’s Greenhouse Information Related to Winter Storm emphasizes checking equipment and fuel in advance; for winter storms it identifies heaters and inflation fans as outage priorities. Which loads matter most will vary by site and event.

Arrange safe, suitable backup heat

Prepare for complete heat failure, not only a brief interruption. Depending on the facility, contingency options may include installed spare or parallel heating equipment, or portable heaters arranged in advance. Match capacity to the greenhouse and crop zones, and account for fuel supply and any electrical power the equipment needs.

Do not use an improvised combustion device on the assumption that it is safe indoors. UF/IFAS says greenhouse heating must maintain conditions without harmful fumes; its maintenance guidance says fossil-fueled unit heaters should be vented outside. Follow equipment instructions, local codes, and qualified advice. Relevant guidance includes UF/IFAS’s Florida Greenhouse Design and Maintenance Guide for Greenhouse Ventilation, Evaporative Cooling Heating Systems.

Keep manual heat and sun-protection options ready

Where suitable for the structure and crops, keep shade material accessible and ensure trained staff know how to operate vents safely. Check that materials fit the greenhouse and can be deployed promptly. Shade is a supplement to functioning ventilation, not a substitute for it; crop light requirements and the weather affect whether and how it should be used. Oklahoma State Extension and UC Davis discuss shade materials and greenhouse climate considerations in the resources linked through UF/IFAS’s greenhouse climate guidance.

What to do when heating fails

  1. Confirm the conditions. Take an independent temperature reading at crop level in representative zones. Compare it with the alarm or controller, then check power and fuel status and inspect equipment only if it is safe to do so. Treat an alarm as a prompt to verify, not as proof that every crop zone has the same conditions.
  2. Use the written response plan. Restore safe power or activate the planned redundant or rental heat source. Prioritize zones according to the site’s crop and facility plan; there is no universal crop ranking that fits every greenhouse.
  3. Avoid unsafe improvisation. Do not bypass electrical protections or use combustion equipment in a way that risks harmful fumes. Use only equipment installed or operated according to its instructions and applicable safety requirements.
  4. Track the incident. Record the time, zone temperatures, actions taken, and when conditions recover. This gives staff and technical support a useful record for follow-up.

What to do when cooling or ventilation fails

  1. Locate the failure. Check temperatures in representative crop areas and determine whether the problem involves power, a fan, pump, evaporative-cooling pad, vent, or control. UF/IFAS maintenance guidance notes that impaired evaporative cooling can reduce efficiency and allow greenhouse temperatures to rise.
  2. Restore ventilation or cooling safely. Follow the established manual or backup procedure. UF/IFAS explains that ventilation can reduce inside temperature toward outside air temperature; it cannot be expected to cool the greenhouse below outdoor conditions.
  3. Reduce direct solar load if appropriate. Deploy prepared shade where it suits the crop and structure. Shade cloth and related materials can reduce direct solar exposure, but effectiveness depends on material, installation, weather, and the crop’s light needs. Do not assume shade alone will prevent injury in extreme heat.
  4. Arrange repair and support. Contact the responsible technician and crop or horticultural support while staff monitor conditions and follow the site’s escalation plan.

Set crop-specific limits rather than relying on a universal threshold

There is no single crop-safe temperature or exposure time established for every crop, growth stage, greenhouse design, and weather condition. Set alert points and response priorities with crop-specific guidance and local horticultural advice. Decisions also need to account for construction, outside conditions, fuel, electrical loads, and staff safety. The extension and government guidance cited here is largely North American; operators elsewhere should apply local codes and specialist advice.
