Follow the imaging center’s instructions first: preparation differs by facility and scan protocol, and fasting is not a universal requirement. Before your appointment, confirm food and drink rules, regular medicines, clothing, arrival time, and whether contrast is planned. Complete the safety screening carefully, and contact the center ahead of time about implants, possible pregnancy, or anxiety in enclosed spaces.
Before your appointment, confirm the center’s instructions
Read the appointment information and call the imaging center if anything is missing or unclear. General MRI guidance says to continue your usual food and medicines unless your clinician or the facility gives different instructions; do not assume you need to fast. Ask about any preparation specific to your scan, including whether contrast is planned. The RadiologyInfo.org guide to body MRI notes that food, drink, and medication instructions can vary.
- Confirm whether you may eat and drink normally.
- Ask whether to take your regular medicines as usual.
- Check what to wear, when to arrive, and whether the center will provide a gown.
- Ask whether contrast is part of your particular protocol.
Complete the MRI safety screening accurately
Tell the MRI team about implants and medical devices, previous surgery, metal fragments or a possible retained foreign body, and relevant health conditions. Do not decide on your own that an implant or metal fragment makes MRI either safe or impossible; the team needs to assess it. The MRI’s strong magnetic field can make some objects and devices hazardous, as explained in RadiologyInfo.org’s MRI safety guidance.
Tell the center if you are pregnant or could be pregnant. If contrast is planned, disclose kidney disease or kidney failure, a kidney transplant, liver disease, and any previous reaction to gadolinium contrast. Whether a preventive whole-body MRI uses contrast depends on the protocol; there is no single approach established for every provider.

Plan ahead for claustrophobia or anxiety
If enclosed spaces make you anxious, contact the center before scan day. Ask what scanner will be used and what accommodations may be available, and discuss medication with your clinician. RadiologyInfo.org advises: “If you have claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces) or anxiety, ask your doctor to prescribe a mild sedative prior to the date of your exam.” If you are prescribed a sedative, take it only as directed and arrange a ride home rather than driving yourself.
On scan day, remove metal and follow staff directions
Leave jewelry, watches, mobile phones, hearing aids, removable dental work, and other metallic or electronic items outside the MRI room. Follow the center’s instructions about clothing, makeup, and piercings; garments may contain metal, and many facilities ask patients to change into a gown. If you are unsure whether an item is safe, ask staff instead of bringing it into the scanner area.

Let the technologist know if anything has changed since you completed the safety questionnaire. This includes a newly discovered health issue, device, or possible metal exposure.

The scanner makes loud noises, so use the earplugs or headphones the facility provides or approves. You will need to lie still; staff may ask for brief breath-holds. The technologist can see and communicate with you during the scan, so tell them if you need help or are struggling to remain comfortable.

Preparation details such as food rules, contrast use, clothing, and anxiety support are provider- and protocol-specific. A whole-body MRI provider may describe its own consent and screening process, but that should not be treated as a universal schedule for all centers.
