No number-picking method can make a valid lottery combination more likely to be drawn. Lottery draws are random, and previous results do not predict the next one. Choose numbers for personal reasons or use a random pick if you prefer—but check the official odds for the specific game and treat a ticket as entertainment, not an investment.
Can you pick numbers that are more likely to win?
No. The Responsible Gambling Council puts it plainly: “There is no strategy to predict the winning combination as draws are completely random.” Lottery outcomes may be produced by a ball draw or a random number generator; either way, a number-selection system cannot forecast the result. Responsible Gambling Council: Your Gambling Questions, Answered
This applies to birthdays, lucky numbers, balanced odd-and-even picks, high-and-low combinations, number patterns, and rituals. Some combinations look more random to people than others, but that does not give them a better chance of being drawn.
Do Quick Pick, hot numbers, or your own numbers change the odds?
Quick Pick versus choosing your own numbers
For a valid entry, the selection method does not improve the chance of matching the draw. Quick Pick is a convenient way to get a combination; choosing numbers yourself is a preference. The Irish National Lottery says favourite numbers and rituals cannot influence the outcome. Irish National Lottery: Know the odds

Hot, cold, or “due” numbers
A number appearing often—or not appearing recently—does not make it more or less likely in the next independent draw. The NSW Government’s GambleAware guidance addresses beliefs that numbers are “due,” along with systems based on recent results, as lottery myths. GambleAware NSW: Lotteries, Keno & Scratchies
Repeating the same numbers
Playing one combination every week does not make it increasingly likely to win. The Responsible Gambling Council explains: “For lotteries, that means that betting the same numbers each week won’t help you win any more than betting different numbers.” Responsible Gambling Council: Common Myths about Gambling

What do lottery odds actually tell you?
Odds are specific to a game, its rules, and the prize tier. Jackpot odds are not the same as odds of winning any prize, and figures from one lottery cannot be applied to another. Check the official rules and current player information for the exact game before buying; the UK Gambling Commission says players should be given information on how winners are selected, the prizes, and the likelihood of winning. UK Gambling Commission: Information to lottery players: proceeds and prizes
As examples listed by GambleAware NSW, Powerball Division 1 odds are 1 in 134,490,400 and Saturday Lotto Division 1 odds are 1 in 8,145,060. These are game- and prize-tier-specific figures from that page, not universal lottery odds; rules and odds can change. The Responsible Gambling Council gives 1 in 14 million as an example of Lotto 6/49 jackpot odds. Check the current official rules for your game rather than relying on an example figure.

Does buying more tickets improve your chance?
Buying additional entries covers additional combinations, but it also increases what you spend. It does not make any individual ticket more likely to win. The Irish National Lottery cautions that buying more does not change the odds on an individual ticket. More entries should not be treated as a way to make a profit.

- Identify the exact game and prize you care about. Consult that lottery’s official rules and odds, including whether the figure is for the jackpot or any prize.
- Choose a valid combination however you like. Use Quick Pick or select numbers yourself; neither approach predicts the draw.
- Set a spending and time limit before you play. Treat the ticket as entertainment, not a reliable way to make money, and do not borrow to play.
Responsible gambling guidance recommends setting limits and not viewing gambling as a way to make money. Responsible Gambling Council: Your Gambling Questions, Answered
