How to Move Cryptocurrency from an Exchange to a Hardware Wallet

Verify the receive address on your hardware wallet, select a network supported by both the wallet and exchange, and test a small withdrawal before sending more.

To move crypto safely, generate a receive address for the exact asset in your hardware wallet’s official companion software, verify that address on the device screen, then withdraw from the exchange using a network supported by both sides. For a larger transfer, send the exchange’s minimum withdrawal first and confirm it arrives before sending the rest.

Before you withdraw: confirm the asset and network

First check that your hardware wallet supports both the cryptocurrency you hold and the network you plan to use. An asset name or familiar-looking address does not prove that a particular network is supported by your wallet setup. The network selected for the exchange withdrawal must match the receiving wallet’s supported network; Binance warns that choosing the wrong network can result in funds that cannot be recovered (Binance’s withdrawal guide).

Use the wallet manufacturer’s official software and setup instructions. If you are setting up a new wallet, complete its backup process on the device and store the recovery backup offline. Trezor advises against photographing the backup or typing it into a computer or phone (Trezor’s hardware-wallet guide). A transfer needs your public receive address—not your recovery phrase or backup.

Get and verify the hardware wallet’s receive address

  1. Unlock the hardware wallet and open its official companion software.
  2. Select the account for the exact asset you intend to receive, then choose Receive.
  3. Display the full receive address in the software and compare it with the address shown on the hardware device. Approve or continue only if they match. Trezor and Ledger both instruct users to verify addresses on the device itself (Trezor’s guide; Ledger’s Bitcoin receiving instructions).
  4. Copy or scan the verified public address for the exchange withdrawal. Never provide your recovery backup to an exchange, support agent, email, or ordinary computer form.

Do not assume an address copied from transaction history is safe to reuse. Trezor warns that address-poisoning scams can put lookalike addresses into transaction histories (Trezor’s guide).

Submit the withdrawal from the exchange

  1. Open the exchange’s withdrawal flow and select the same cryptocurrency held in the receiving wallet.
  2. Choose a network that the exchange offers for withdrawal and the receiving wallet supports for that asset. If you cannot confirm support on both sides, stop and check their current official instructions.
  3. Paste or scan the address you verified on the hardware device. Check the complete destination address, not just its first or last characters.
  4. Enter the amount and review the exchange’s displayed withdrawal fee, expected amount to arrive, and minimum. Check whether that asset-and-network combination also requires a memo or tag, and enter it exactly as requested.
  5. Before confirming, review the asset, network, full address, amount, fee, and any memo or tag together. Binance’s guide specifically advises checking the network and fee in its withdrawal flow (Binance’s withdrawal guide).

Send a test before moving a larger amount

For a substantial transfer, withdraw the smallest amount the exchange permits to the verified wallet address. Wait until it appears in the wallet before sending the remainder. Trezor recommends this test-transfer approach for exchange withdrawals (Trezor’s exchange-to-wallet instructions). The test confirms that the first withdrawal reached the destination, but check the details again for every later withdrawal; it does not protect against a changed address, network, or memo.

Track the transfer and understand delays

Save the exchange withdrawal record and transaction ID (TXID). The TXID can help you track the transaction and its confirmations (Trezor’s instructions). If the withdrawal is pending, check its status through the exchange’s official interface and use the relevant blockchain explorer to follow the transaction. Do not submit a duplicate withdrawal just because the first is taking time.

There is no universal fee or arrival-time estimate: both depend on the exchange, asset, network, exchange policy, and current network traffic. Use the current withdrawal screen for the fee, minimum, and expected amount, and allow confirmation time to vary with network conditions (Binance’s withdrawal guide; Trezor’s transfer guide).

If the exchange asks you to verify wallet ownership

Some exchanges may request proof that a destination is a self-hosted wallet, depending on the asset, account, and local requirements. Coinbase documents a message-signing method for some ERC-20 cases and a small deposit test for other blockchain networks; its help page also notes that local Travel Rule requirements may prompt verification (Coinbase’s self-hosted-wallet verification guidance). The deposit test involves sending the exact requested amount from the wallet to a Coinbase-generated address and may incur network fees. This is Coinbase’s documented process, not a universal requirement across exchanges.

Common errors that can put a transfer at risk

  • Wrong network: Similar address formats do not establish that the wallet supports the selected network. Confirm compatibility on both the exchange and wallet sides before sending.
  • Wrong asset and address pairing: Send the selected cryptocurrency only to an address intended to receive that asset. Trezor gives Bitcoin Cash sent to a Bitcoin address as an example of a mismatch (Trezor’s guide); Ledger warns that sending non-Bitcoin assets to a Bitcoin address can typically cause permanent loss (Ledger’s Bitcoin instructions).
  • Unverified or stale address: Check the complete receive address against the hardware device, rather than trusting clipboard contents or transaction history.
  • Missing memo or tag: Some asset-and-network combinations need an additional identifier. Follow the exchange’s current instructions for the specific withdrawal.
  • Recovery backup exposed: A public receive address is sufficient to receive funds. Keep the recovery backup offline and never enter it into an exchange site or share it with support.

Choosing a hardware wallet for transfers

Before choosing a device, check whether it supports the exact asset and network you plan to receive, whether its address can be verified on the device screen, and whether its setup and backup instructions fit your needs. Also consider its companion software and operating-system compatibility. These are comparison criteria, not a device ranking: the cited workflow guidance does not provide independent testing or establish which wallet is best for every user.
