What LinkedIn calls a carousel post
An organic LinkedIn carousel is a document post that people browse page by page in their feed. The composer generally calls the feature Add a document, which is why searching for a button labeled “Create carousel” can be confusing.
Do not confuse this with a paid carousel ad. An ad is created in Campaign Manager and uses multiple image cards. LinkedIn’s ad specification calls for two to 10 cards and recommends 1:1 images at 1080 × 1080 pixels: LinkedIn’s carousel-ad specifications. Those rules do not define the requirements for an organic document post.
What you need before designing
- One clear promise, problem or lesson for a specific audience.
- A page-by-page outline.
- A design tool such as Canva, PowerPoint, Google Slides or Adobe Express.
- A final document, preferably a text-based PDF.
- A caption, document title and one specific call to action.
Useful subjects include tutorials, checklists, frameworks, before-and-after examples, mistakes and fixes, data summaries, case studies, career advice, event content and industry explainers. LinkedIn’s document-post guidance covers professional knowledge sharing, insights, culture and career content: LinkedIn’s document-post help.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to plan the pages
Give every page one job. A reliable sequence is:
- Cover: State the result, problem or compelling question.
- Context: Explain why the issue matters to the reader.
- Teaching pages: Present one idea, step or principle per page.
- Example: Show the advice in practice.
- Summary: Recap the most useful points.
- CTA: Ask for a comment, follow, download, consultation or visit.
There is no verified universal best page count. Use fewer pages for a simple checklist and more for a process, framework or case study. Do not add pages merely to reach a supposed algorithmic target.
How to design the carousel
Choose a consistent page shape
LinkedIn’s organic document guidance specifies file and page limits, not one mandatory pixel dimension. For mobile reading, portrait (approximately 4:5) or square pages are practical recommendations. Landscape works when a chart, screenshot or wide diagram genuinely needs the width. Keep every page the same size and leave breathing room around the edges.
Make the first page earn the swipe
Use a specific benefit or problem rather than a vague label such as “LinkedIn Tips.” Large type, strong contrast and a simple visual make the promise understandable while someone is scrolling.
Keep each page scannable
- Use one main idea per page.
- Prefer short paragraphs and bullets to dense blocks of text.
- Keep fonts, colors, spacing and page numbering consistent.
- Use examples, diagrams or screenshots where they explain faster than prose.
- Let branding support the lesson instead of covering the page with logos.
Build accessibility in
Use live text rather than screenshots of text. A scanned or image-only PDF can be difficult for screen readers; Buffer specifically warns against photo-based PDFs for accessibility: Buffer’s accessibility guidance. Maintain strong contrast, avoid tiny type, do not communicate meaning through color alone, and explain important charts or visuals in the caption or surrounding text.
File formats, dimensions and limits
LinkedIn lists these document formats and ceilings in its supported-media guidance: supported LinkedIn media types.
| Item | Organic document post |
|---|---|
| Preferred format | |
| Other listed formats | DOC, DOCX, PPT, PPTX, ODT, PPSX and ODS |
| Maximum file size | 100 MB |
| Maximum pages | 300 |
| Maximum word count | 1 million words |
| Maximum image resolution | 36 megapixels |
| Official universal pixel size | Not established in LinkedIn’s cited organic-document guidance |
| Practical design advice | Use identical portrait or square pages for most mobile-first posts |
These are platform ceilings, not targets. A PDF is usually the safest final export because it preserves page order and appearance and is supported by major schedulers.
Tools for creating the file
Canva
Create a multi-page design, choose a portrait or square canvas, keep all pages identical, and download as a PDF. Canva suits beginners and template-led production. Check current plans at Canva’s pricing page; do not assume a particular feature or price is permanent.
PowerPoint or Google Slides
These are strong choices for business presentations, charts and collaborative teams. Export the completed deck to PDF before uploading where possible. LinkedIn accepts PPT and PPTX, but PDF generally gives a more predictable preview.

Word or Google Docs
A document editor can produce a text-led guide, but it needs deliberate formatting to feel like a visual carousel. Export to PDF and inspect every page before posting.

How to upload and publish on LinkedIn
Labels can vary by device, language, account type and interface revision, but the desktop-first flow is:
- Sign in to LinkedIn.
- Open the homepage, the relevant Group or the LinkedIn Page where the post should appear.
- Click Start a post.
- Open additional upload options if necessary and choose Add a document.
- Select the PDF or another supported document.
- Enter a descriptive document title, such as “7 LinkedIn Profile Mistakes That Reduce Trust.”
- Write the caption, then add relevant mentions and hashtags.
- Check the preview on desktop and phone if possible.
- Publish.
The document title is separate from the caption and is required by some scheduling services. LinkedIn says the uploaded document itself cannot be edited in place; the post description can be edited, but a changed file must be removed and uploaded again: LinkedIn’s document-post instructions.

How to write the caption
Use the caption to provide context, not to paste every word from the pages. This structure works:
- Hook: Name the problem or desired result.
- Audience: Say who will benefit.
- Direction: Tell readers to open or swipe through the document.
- Value: Preview what they will learn.
- CTA: Ask one clear question or invite one action.

Most LinkedIn carousels lose readers on the first page.

Open the document—and tell me which change you will apply first.
Use only relevant hashtags and mentions. Repeating keywords does not replace a useful promise.
How to schedule a carousel
LinkedIn Pages
LinkedIn provides scheduled-post guidance for Pages: scheduled LinkedIn Page posts. Confirm that the document-upload option appears in your Page composer before relying on scheduling.
Personal profiles and third-party tools
LinkedIn identifies partners for scheduling profiles and Pages, including Buffer and Hootsuite: LinkedIn’s scheduling-partner resource.
Buffer documents support for one LinkedIn PDF document per post, up to 100 MB and 300 pages, with a required document title. Its workflow is to connect the profile or Page, choose Create Post, select LinkedIn, add the caption and PDF, enter the title, then choose Add to Queue, Schedule Post, Share Now or Save as Draft: Buffer’s LinkedIn documentation and Buffer for LinkedIn.
Best Value
Hootsuite supports LinkedIn publishing and scheduling and offers Canva and Adobe Express integrations on applicable plans. Verify document support, profile-versus-Page support, title fields, mention handling, analytics and whether the service auto-publishes or sends a reminder before subscribing.

| Feature | Organic document post | Carousel ad |
|---|---|---|
| Where created | LinkedIn post composer | Campaign Manager |
| Core asset | One multi-page document | Multiple image cards |
| Typical control | Add a document | Paid carousel-ad setup |
| Published specifications | LinkedIn lists document formats, 100 MB and 300 pages | Two to 10 cards; recommended 1:1, 1080 × 1080 images |
Uploading separate JPG or PNG files through the image control creates an image post, not the same document carousel experience.
Common problems and fixes
“Add a document” is missing
- Try LinkedIn on desktop.
- Start from the homepage or Page composer.
- Open the additional post options.
- Confirm that you are making an organic post, not an ad.
- Test with a small PDF and an updated browser.
The PDF will not upload
- Check that it is below 100 MB and 300 pages.
- Open it locally to rule out corruption or password protection.
- Confirm consistent page dimensions and correctly rendered fonts.
- Enter the document title.
- Do not combine the document with incompatible media in the same upload.
The carousel looks blurry
Use higher-resolution source images, export with a high-quality PDF setting, keep text live and simplify crowded pages. Preview the PDF before upload. No export setting can guarantee that LinkedIn’s preview compression will disappear.
Pages are cropped or out of order
Make every page the same size, keep content away from the trim edge, avoid mixing portrait and landscape, and check for accidental blank pages before exporting.
A scheduled post fails
Verify the LinkedIn connection, destination profile or Page, document title, file limits and the scheduler’s PDF support. Buffer says an unauthorized LinkedIn channel cannot publish or update analytics; reconnect the channel if authorization has expired.
You need to change one page after publishing
Edit the caption if only the wording is wrong. If the file is wrong, remove or delete the post and publish a corrected document; LinkedIn does not provide in-place editing for the uploaded document.
Improve results without guessing at the algorithm
- Make the cover promise specific and useful.
- Ensure page two continues the hook instead of wasting space.
- Test readability on a phone.
- Use a progression from problem to explanation to example.
- Ask one answerable question in the CTA and respond to comments.
- Track saves, comments, clicks and follows across several posts rather than treating one result as proof.
Buffer reported that its analysis of more than one million LinkedIn posts from 2023 placed document carousels third by engagement in that dataset. That is historical, third-party analysis—not a guarantee that every carousel will outperform another format: Buffer’s analysis.
