If you entered the wrong amount and the bid qualifies for retraction, use eBay’s official retraction process and immediately submit a new bid with the lower maximum. If retraction is unavailable, you generally cannot lower the limit directly; you can ask the seller to cancel, but the seller may refuse.
What an eBay “maximum bid” actually is
Your maximum bid is the highest amount eBay’s automatic-bidding system is authorized to bid for you. eBay raises your bid in the listing’s increments only as needed to stay ahead of other bidders, up to that ceiling. The displayed current bid can therefore be much lower than your maximum.
For example, if you enter a $100 maximum and competing bids require only $42, the listing may show you winning at about $42. You are not automatically charged $100; however, another bidder could drive the price upward to your $100 limit. Include shipping and other required costs when deciding what maximum you can afford. See eBay’s automatic-bidding guidance.
Is there an “Edit maximum bid” button?
eBay’s current official help documents increasing a maximum when you are outbid and retracting a bid when an approved reason applies, but it does not document a normal control for lowering an active maximum. Menu names and layouts can vary by country site, device, app version, and account, so your screen may differ; there is no generally available, documented edit workflow to rely on.

How to lower a maximum bid you entered incorrectly
- Open eBay’s official Retract a bid page.
- Sign in to the account that placed the bid.
- Select the auction containing the mistaken bid.
- Choose the truthful permitted reason, such as entering the wrong amount.
- Submit the retraction.
- Return to the listing immediately.
- Enter the lower maximum you actually intend to pay, check shipping and listing terms, and select Place bid.
eBay’s example is entering $200 instead of $20: retract the mistaken bid and enter the correct amount immediately afterward. Retraction is not guaranteed; the live form determines whether your bid qualifies.
When eBay may allow a retraction
Under eBay’s invalid bid-retraction policy and retraction guidance, the principal circumstances are:
- You accidentally entered the wrong bid amount.
- The seller significantly changed the item description after you bid.
- The listing is in a category that permits retractions.
The less-than-12-hours timing rule
If the auction ends in less than 12 hours, the applicable retraction option may be available only during the first hour after you placed the bid. A bid made outside that window may be rejected or omitted by the form, so check the live eligibility result rather than assuming it qualifies.

Trading Cards exception
eBay says bids on items in Trading Cards categories cannot be retracted through the normal process. You may contact the seller and request cancellation, but the seller is not required to agree.

You changed your mind
“I no longer want it” is not an approved retraction reason. Bids are binding in most auction categories. Do not select a false reason, repeatedly retract bids, or retract to influence another bidder or the final price. eBay may take action for policy violations.
The auction is too close to ending
When the one-hour condition for an auction ending in under 12 hours has passed, the retraction form may not permit a correction.
The current price is already above your intended limit
Even if eBay accepts a retraction, a replacement bid must meet the listing’s current minimum. If the current price is higher than the maximum you now want, you may be unable to re-enter at your target amount.
What happens if you are already the high bidder?
Suppose the listing shows you winning at $30 while your hidden maximum is $100. Lowering the ceiling would not necessarily make the displayed price fall below $30. After a successful retraction, the auction’s price and bid history follow eBay’s bidding rules and other bidders’ activity; neither a lower visible price nor continued high-bidder status is guaranteed.

If another bidder immediately outbids your replacement bid
Your new bid must satisfy the listing’s current increment and minimum. If another bidder has already set a higher automatic-bidding maximum, eBay may outbid you immediately. That result usually indicates the other bidder’s ceiling is higher, not that your lower maximum was ignored.

When the retraction form fails
- Verify that you are signed in to the account that placed the bid.
- Check the listing category, especially whether it is Trading Cards.
- Check when you placed the bid and how soon the auction ends.
- Confirm that your selected reason matches an approved circumstance.
- Use the official retraction page rather than relying only on a control inside the listing.
- Message the seller requesting cancellation if no retraction is available. Cancellation is discretionary, not a buyer-controlled override.
Do not create another account, bid against yourself, or invent a reason. If you win, eBay’s bidding guidance says you have committed to completing the purchase; a later change of mind may not qualify for order cancellation. See eBay’s bidding overview.

Typo: $250 entered instead of $25
Open the retraction page, select the wrong-amount reason if the form allows it, retract, and immediately submit $25 as the new maximum. Review shipping before confirming.
Current bid of $18 with a $100 maximum
You are not necessarily facing a $100 charge. The $100 figure is your automatic-bidding ceiling; the current price may remain $18 unless competition requires more.

Trading Cards listing or a late-stage auction
Normal retraction may be unavailable. Ask the seller politely, but plan for the possibility that the seller declines and that you must honor the bid if you win.
