You generally can’t link a personal PayPal account to Venmo as a payment method or combine the two balances. Eligible users can, however, send payments between PayPal and Venmo by finding the recipient through their phone number. If you’re moving your own money rather than paying someone else, use a bank account linked separately to both services.
Can you directly link PayPal and Venmo?
No—not in the usual account-linking sense. Venmo’s payment-method settings support eligible cards and U.S. bank accounts, not a PayPal balance as a standard funding source. The services do not become one account: expect separate logins, balances and payment methods. Venmo’s U.S. User Agreement describes its supported payment methods, while PayPal’s bank-linking instructions cover connecting a bank to PayPal.
The feature available to eligible users is cross-platform person-to-person sending, not a direct account connection. Availability depends on account eligibility and region; U.S. instructions do not necessarily apply elsewhere. See Venmo’s cross-platform payment guidance.
How to send money from Venmo to PayPal
- Open the Venmo mobile app and start a payment using its send-money control.
- Search for the PayPal recipient using the phone number associated with that person’s PayPal account.
- Select the intended person and carefully verify the displayed recipient details.
- Enter the amount and, if useful, a note.
- Review the funding source and any fee shown before confirming.
- Send the payment, then check its status in Venmo’s transaction history before trying again.
Venmo says U.S. cross-platform payments are typically instant once completed, but timing can vary. A recipient must have an eligible account, and the phone number must be associated with that account and discoverable. App controls and labels can change.

How to send money from PayPal to Venmo
- Open PayPal and start a send-money payment.
- Search for the Venmo recipient using the phone number tied to their account. PayPal may also offer other search details, such as a name, email or handle, depending on the account and interface.
- Choose the intended recipient and verify the account details before proceeding.
- Enter the amount and review the selected payment method and any fee displayed.
- Confirm the payment, then check its status in PayPal.
PayPal currently promotes sending between PayPal and Venmo without switching apps. Search options and button labels may vary with app version, account type and rollout. Its send-money page has current service information.
How to move money between your own PayPal and Venmo accounts
Cross-platform sending is described as paying another eligible user. It is not a guaranteed way to transfer a PayPal balance into your own Venmo balance, or vice versa. For a dependable route, use a bank account as an intermediary and link it separately to each service.

- Link an eligible bank account to PayPal and to Venmo as separate payment relationships.
- To move money from PayPal toward Venmo, transfer or withdraw the PayPal funds to the bank account.
- Then add money from that bank to your Venmo balance, if that option is available to your account, or use the bank as the payment method for a Venmo payment.
- To move money in the other direction, transfer Venmo funds to the bank, then move them from the bank into PayPal.
Venmo says adding money from a bank to a Venmo balance typically takes 3–5 business days; that estimate applies to that particular bank-to-balance step, not every transfer in either direction. PayPal bank verification can be instant or manual. With manual verification, PayPal may use two small deposits that can take up to three business days to appear. Link a bank account to PayPal
- On PayPal’s website, go to Wallet.
- Choose Link a card or bank, then Link a bank account.
- Search for or select your bank.
- Complete instant verification if offered, or enter the bank details and follow PayPal’s confirmation steps.
PayPal says an account can have up to eight linked bank accounts at once. This is a PayPal-to-bank connection, not a PayPal-to-Venmo link.

Link a bank account to Venmo
In Venmo, open the account’s payment-method settings and add an eligible U.S. bank account. The app may offer instant or manual verification. Venmo’s U.S. User Agreement sets out its payment-method and account requirements. Linking the same bank to both apps still leaves the two services separate.
What it costs
Fees depend on the country, payment type, account and funding source. PayPal says eligible U.S. domestic personal payments to friends and family are free when funded by a PayPal balance or bank account; other funding methods or transaction types may have different charges. Venmo and PayPal display applicable charges during payment review, so check the amount and fee in the app before sending. Do not assume a payment is free because it crosses between these services. Why can’t you find the other account?
- Check the phone number: Use the complete number associated with the recipient’s account, including the correct country code if relevant.
- Confirm the number is attached to the account: A number that is not confirmed or associated with the intended account may not find it.
- Check discoverability: The recipient’s privacy or search settings may prevent the account from appearing.
- Check eligibility and region: Both users need eligible accounts, and cross-platform payments are not available in every market.
- Check the app and account: Update the app and make sure you are signed into the correct account. Verification requirements, security reviews or temporary restrictions can also affect sending.
If a payment is pending or the feature is unavailable, inspect its status in the relevant app before retrying. Sending again without checking can create a duplicate payment. Venmo’s troubleshooting guidance specifically points users to phone-number accuracy, search privacy and regional availability.
Can you request money across PayPal and Venmo?
Not currently through the cross-platform feature: Venmo’s help page says cross-platform requests are not supported. To ask for money, use a request within the same service or, for PayPal, create and share a payment or request link. PayPal describes that option on its request-money page.
Safety and cancellation
- Verify before sending: Check the recipient’s details, not just a profile image or username. Person-to-person payments may be difficult or impossible to reverse once completed. Venmo says most payments are made immediately and generally cannot be canceled; different rules may apply to some international payments.
- Check status before retrying: If the payment appears pending or the app reports an issue, review the transaction in the sending service first to avoid paying twice.
- Use the right payment type: A personal payment is not a substitute for a purchase payment. Protections, dispute rights, tax treatment and account rules may differ for goods or services. Don’t send a personal payment to a stranger just to avoid a fee.
- Use a bank for your own balance transfer: If you need a record of moving your own funds, the separate bank transfers are clearer than a payment that could appear to be between two people.
For U.S. users, Venmo’s User Agreement distinguishes personal payments from payments for goods or services and describes separate business-profile provisions. Cross-platform availability, timing and fees can vary outside the United States.
