1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIs the slowdown happening on one device, over Wi-Fi throughout the home, or across the satellite connection? Find out before buying equipment: a slow connection can stem from one device, household internet use, Wi-Fi placement, plan data rules, congestion, weather, or a provider fault. Work through these checks in order, then contact your provider if the problem persists.
1. Find out what is affected
Check whether the problem affects one device or several. Restart the affected device and make sure it is connected to the Wi-Fi network you intend to use. If other devices work normally, the problem may be with that device or its Wi-Fi connection. If several devices are slow, continue with the household and service checks below.
If you can, compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection to the router. A wired test can help distinguish a Wi-Fi problem from a broader connection problem; it cannot rule out satellite congestion, weather, or plan data limits.
2. Take a useful speed reading
Pause streaming, downloads, cloud backups, and other internet use in the household before testing. Viasat specifically recommends stopping other internet use for a speed test and points customers to Speedtest.net; use your provider’s own app or test if it offers one. Record download and upload results, plus latency or packet loss if the test reports them. Repeat at another time if results vary. Viasat notes that evening congestion can affect speeds. Do not treat a speed test over Wi-Fi as a direct measurement of the plan’s advertised maximum. The test reflects the device, Wi-Fi link, household activity, network conditions, and test setup as well as the service itself.
3. Check plan data and congestion
Sign in to your provider account and review current usage, your plan’s data allowance, and any rules about reduced speeds or priority. Satellite providers do not all apply the same terms, and the rules can vary by plan.

- HughesNet: Its support FAQ says customers who exceed plan data may remain connected but experience slower speeds during high-traffic periods until the next billing cycle. HughesNet slow or no connectivity FAQ
- Viasat: Its support page says some plans distinguish high-speed data from slower standard data and that congestion may further reduce speeds or priority. It describes separate typical-usage priority language for Unleashed. Check your account’s current terms rather than assuming one rule applies to every Viasat plan. If slowdowns recur at busy times, compare the timing with your account’s data status and your household’s use. This pattern can help distinguish a plan or congestion issue from a fault in your home Wi-Fi.
4. Separate Wi-Fi problems from satellite service problems
Test close to the router, then from the location where you normally notice trouble. If your device and router have Ethernet ports, a Cat 6 Ethernet cable can help compare wired performance with Wi-Fi; it is a diagnostic aid, not a satellite-speed upgrade.

Try placing the router in a central, open location, away from obstructions. Concurrent heavy use, device Wi-Fi settings, router capability, and router placement can all affect the experience. HughesNet also recommends keeping its modem upright with airflow and notes that an older router can be a factor. These are checks to make before considering a purchase, not a universal instruction to replace a router. Viasat’s slow-speed troubleshooting guide and HughesNet’s connectivity FAQ
5. Consider weather and the dish’s view
Note whether interruptions align with severe weather. HughesNet identifies weather disturbances and objects such as trees as possible causes of a disrupted line of sight. Viasat says severe thunderstorms or heavy snowstorms can temporarily affect service; weather at a distant gateway may also matter even when conditions at home are clear. Heavy snow or ice on equipment can impair reception. HughesNet connectivity FAQ and Viasat weather guidance

Look for visible changes, such as tree growth, that might obstruct the dish’s view, but do not climb onto a roof or adjust a provider-installed dish as routine troubleshooting. Contact your provider about installation or alignment concerns. Viasat says accumulation on an antenna may be wiped off only when it is safely accessible. If service remains unreliable after weather improves, contact support.

- Check that the modem and router have power, note their status lights, and confirm that cables are connected securely.
- Restart the equipment using your provider’s instructions. HughesNet’s FAQ describes unplugging its modem from the wall, waiting 10 seconds, and plugging it back in. Viasat also recommends briefly unplugging the modem. Follow the instructions for your own equipment rather than assuming procedures are interchangeable. - Wait for the equipment to reconnect, then repeat the test with other household internet use paused.
A restart is different from a factory reset. Do not repeatedly factory-reset equipment or attempt dish repairs unless provider support directs you to do so.

7. Contact support when the issue persists
Check your provider’s outage information and support channel if multiple devices remain affected across Wi-Fi and wired tests, the modem reports a service fault, or the problem continues after weather clears. HughesNet explicitly advises contacting customer care if service does not resume after weather clears or its troubleshooting steps do not restore connectivity. Viasat directs customers to its customer-care outage channel. Starlink’s indexed troubleshooting guidance points customers to check obstructions and network conditions and file a support ticket if basic steps do not resolve slow or intermittent service. When you contact support, provide the times the issue occurred, affected devices, whether wired testing changed the result, your speed-test readings, local weather, and your account’s data status. Follow the instructions for your provider and equipment.
