Short answer: Shopify merchants with eligible stores are generally included automatically through Shopify Catalog, and OpenAI says Etsy catalogs are already integrated. Other merchants can apply to share a direct product feed, but acceptance and placement are not guaranteed. ChatGPT now primarily helps shoppers discover and compare products, then sends them to the merchant’s website or app to complete checkout.
How ChatGPT shopping works now
ChatGPT users can describe a budget, use case, style, size, brand or other constraint and receive visual product results. Product cards may show prices, reviews, features, availability and merchant links. Users can refine the request conversationally and compare products side by side.
OpenAI’s March 2026 update describes richer visual browsing and more current product information: Powering Product Discovery in ChatGPT. Shopping is currently live for users in the United States, with broader regional availability planned; account, geography, rollout and category differences can apply.
The current model is discovery and referral. OpenAI says purchases generally finish on a merchant-owned website or app, rather than through a universal native ChatGPT checkout. Shopify likewise says shoppers are redirected to the store’s checkout, which may open in an in-app browser or a new tab.

The fastest path: Shopify
Shopify says eligible products are automatically discoverable through Shopify Catalog. Check these conditions before expecting inclusion:
- Your store sells to customers in the United States.
- You use Shopify’s Starter plan or higher.
- The storefront is not password-protected.
- Each product has a title, at least one image, a price greater than zero and a valid product URL.
- The product is published to the Online Store, Hydrogen or Headless channel.
- Terms of service, privacy, and return/refund policies are completed.
- The product is not Unlisted, hidden from search engines, prohibited, or B2B-only.
- ChatGPT access remains enabled in Shopify Catalog.
Review the current requirements in Shopify’s Catalog requirements, then open Shopify Admin → Sales channels → Agentic to review settings. Shopify’s channel documentation is at Selling on ChatGPT.
Shopify Catalog can continuously update titles, descriptions, options, images, prices and availability. Custom fields or metafields may also be mapped into catalog data, as described in Shopify Catalog and product discovery for agentic storefronts.
Shopify discovery files are not the product feed
Shopify automatically provides /agents.md, /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt for store-level information such as policies, sitemaps and discovery endpoints. Shopify identifies /agents.md as the canonical agent-discovery URL, but says Shopify Catalog remains the authoritative product-data source for agentic channels.

Etsy sellers
OpenAI’s merchant page says Etsy catalogs are already integrated, so Etsy sellers do not currently need a separate OpenAI application or feed setup. See OpenAI’s merchant information for the current scope and rollout.
How non-Shopify merchants apply
Use the application on OpenAI’s merchant page. It requests:
- First and last name, job title, LinkedIn profile and work email.
- Company, headquarters country and merchant website.
- Primary product categories and intended integration.
- Approximate unique SKU count: 0–1 million, 1–10 million, 10–50 million, 50–100 million, or 100 million or more.
- Whether your feed is ready and meets OpenAI’s specifications, plus comments.
OpenAI describes current applicants as being on a waitlist and says a self-service merchant portal is planned for later in 2026. Applying is not an acceptance, indexing or ranking guarantee. Shopping is currently live for U.S. users, while expansion to additional merchants and regions is planned.
Build a compliant product feed

Validation rules that commonly matter
- Use a stable, unique ID for every product variant.
- Keep titles within 150 characters and descriptions within the schema’s 5,000-character limit.
- Use resolving HTTPS product URLs and publicly accessible JPEG or PNG images.
- Include a three-letter ISO currency code with every price.
- Use supported availability values:
in_stock,out_of_stock,pre_order,backorderorunknown. A futureavailability_dateis required for pre-orders. - Set
is_eligible_search=truebefore enabling checkout eligibility. Checkout eligibility also requiresseller_privacy_policyandseller_tos. - Use ISO country codes for geographic fields.
Files may be UTF-8 tab-delimited .txt/.tsv, comma-delimited .csv, or corresponding gzip-compressed formats. Include one header row and one product or variant per row. OpenAI says invalid rows may fail while valid rows continue processing, and upload history reports missing columns and validation errors. Google-compatible columns may be accepted for a registered feed where OpenAI confirms compatibility, but that path may not support every market, attribute or program.
Improve product data for discovery
Accurate, complete information helps ChatGPT understand whether a product matches a shopper’s request; keyword stuffing has no documented guarantee. Prioritize:
- Descriptive titles and plain-language descriptions.
- Dimensions, materials, compatibility, use cases and category attributes.
- Variant-level size, color, imagery and identifiers.
- Current prices, sale dates and real-time stock.
- Shipping, returns and policy information.
- Brand and manufacturer identifiers.
- Stable URLs and product IDs.
- Region-specific inventory and pricing when applicable.
Why a product may not appear
- The direct feed is awaiting approval or has not been processed.
- Required fields, URLs, images or policy links fail validation.
- The item is out of stock, regionally unavailable or irrelevant to the query.
- The product is B2B-only or in a prohibited or restricted category.
- Public crawling or indexing cannot access the product page.
- Another merchant has stronger relevance, price, availability, quality or primary-seller signals.
OpenAI’s Shopping with ChatGPT Search documentation identifies availability, price, quality and whether a merchant is the maker or primary seller among ranking factors. These factors are not a permanent or complete formula, and a feed never guarantees a top result.
Checkout, fees and older “Instant Checkout” coverage
Some 2025 coverage centered on Instant Checkout and buying inside ChatGPT. The current merchant guidance emphasizes product discovery and merchant-owned checkout instead. Shopify says there are no fees associated with selling in ChatGPT beyond standard payment-processing fees, but commercial terms can change; consult its current documentation before relying on that statement.

OpenAI’s merchant page says there is no general product-feed subscription price published. A ChatGPT app is optional and is mainly suited to larger merchants needing account linking, loyalty, branded experiences or a custom purchase flow. Most merchants should start with a clean feed or their platform’s supported catalog integration.

Remove Shopify Catalog access
- Open Sales channels → Agentic in Shopify Admin.
- Deactivate Allow Shopify to manage for me.
- Select ChatGPT.
- Deactivate Shopify Catalog access and click Save.
Shopify says stopping Catalog sharing can take up to seven days. It does not necessarily remove products found through public crawling, indexing or other data sources.
Make a Shopify product Unlisted
Unlisting can remove a product from sitemaps, search engines and internal store search as well as agentic discovery. It is therefore broader than simply opting out of Shopify Catalog. Robots.txt controls open-web crawling, not product data already shared through Shopify Catalog.
Categories and conduct that can block participation
OpenAI’s Commerce Policies prohibit or restrict areas including adult sexual products, gambling, firearms and ammunition, explosives, certain weapons, dangerous chemicals, recalled or unsafe goods, fake IDs, personal-data lists and social-media manipulation services. Deceptive listings, fake reviews, misleading prices or availability, impersonation and hidden or unfair return terms are also prohibited.

A practical launch checklist
- Identify your route: Shopify Catalog, Etsy integration, direct OpenAI feed, or public discovery.
- Confirm U.S. availability and category eligibility.
- Audit every variant’s ID, title, URL, image, price, currency and stock.
- Publish complete return, privacy and terms information.
- Validate regional targeting and D2C pricing.
- Apply for a direct feed only when your catalog meets the specification.
- Monitor product pages and checkout so prices, inventory and policies remain accurate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Google Merchant Center automatically submit products to ChatGPT?
No automatic submission is documented. The supported routes are Shopify Catalog, Etsy’s existing integration, a direct OpenAI feed, public web discovery and other supported providers.
Can I guarantee a top ChatGPT result by paying for a service?
No. OpenAI describes ranking factors such as relevance, availability, price, quality and primary-seller status, not paid guaranteed organic placement.
Can customers pay inside ChatGPT?
Current OpenAI and Shopify guidance generally sends shoppers to the merchant’s own website or app for checkout. A custom app may support a different controlled experience.
Does this work outside the United States?

Shopify says B2B-only products are not supported for its agentic storefronts. Where a product is sold to both B2B and D2C customers, Shopify says agentic storefronts use D2C pricing.
How long does direct-feed approval take?
OpenAI does not publish a guaranteed approval timeline. Its merchant page describes an application and waitlist, with a self-service portal planned for later in 2026.
What should I do if ChatGPT shows an incorrect price or stock status?
Correct the authoritative catalog or feed, verify the product URL and availability fields, and use the relevant platform or OpenAI merchant support channel to report persistent inaccuracies.
