Microsoft’s Home Use Program (HUP) still exists, but it has been called the Workplace Discount Program since July 2022. For eligible employees, the main current offer is 30% off annual Microsoft 365 Personal or Microsoft 365 Family subscriptions. You verify eligibility with a work email, but you buy and manage the subscription through your personal Microsoft account.
What happened to the Microsoft Home Use Program?
Microsoft renamed HUP the Workplace Discount Program in July 2022. Older articles may therefore use the former name or promise products that are no longer generally offered. Previously purchased HUP products are not automatically invalidated by the rename.
The current offer is primarily a subscription discount—not a universal coupon code. Microsoft advertises 30% off annual Microsoft 365 Personal and Microsoft 365 Family subscriptions. Exact prices vary by country, tax, promotions, plan changes and account status, so check the offer after verification rather than relying on a fixed dollar figure.

Who is eligible?
Employees of companies that meet Microsoft’s Workplace Discount Program requirements may qualify. Having a corporate email address alone does not guarantee eligibility: Microsoft checks whether the employer is recognized as an eligible organization.
Personal Gmail, Outlook.com and similar addresses generally cannot replace the work-email verification step. Contractors, former employees, retirees, subsidiaries and government workers should confirm eligibility rather than assume it. If the checker fails, ask HR, IT or your benefits coordinator whether the organization participates and whether a different corporate domain should be used.
Availability varies by market. Microsoft lists Macao, Russia and Venezuela as excluded markets; China and Hong Kong use separate program sites. The instructions below reflect Microsoft’s U.S. English pages and may differ elsewhere.

How to claim the discount
- Open Microsoft’s official page. Use the Workplace Discount Program website, not an old HUP page or a third-party coupon seller.
- Enter your work email. Type the corporate address associated with your employer and select Get Started.
- Verify the message in your corporate inbox. Microsoft sends a validation link if the employer is recognized. Check spam, junk, quarantine and focused/other folders, and ask IT whether corporate filtering blocked the message.
- Use the correct personal Microsoft account. Open the verification link and sign in with—or create—the personal Microsoft account that should own the subscription. Your work email verifies eligibility; it should not normally own the personal purchase.
- Choose the available plan. Eligible employees may see Microsoft 365 Personal, Family or employer-specific products. Do not assume every employee sees the same catalog.
- Review checkout carefully. Confirm the personal account, plan name, annual billing, renewal amount, recurring-billing setting and payment method before completing the Microsoft Store purchase.
- Install from your account. After purchase, open Services & subscriptions, find Microsoft 365 and select the install option. Sign in to the installed apps with the same personal account.
Microsoft 365 Personal or Family?

Microsoft says Family can be shared with up to five additional household members—six users total—with separate Microsoft accounts and account-based access. It is usually the stronger value when several people will use the subscription, but wasteful if only one person needs it.
What is no longer generally included?
Stale HUP coverage often promises discounted hardware or one-time Office licenses. Microsoft’s current program page says:
- Surface devices and accessories are no longer available through the program.
- Office Professional Plus and Office Home & Business are no longer generally offered through the current program.
- Visio Professional 2024 and Project Professional 2024 may be discounted only when the employer’s program administrator selects the employee for those product-specific benefits.
Therefore, do not expect a cheap perpetual Office license or Surface discount simply because your work email passes the eligibility check.

Existing Microsoft 365 subscribers
Existing Personal and Family subscribers can use the offer, but the purchase must be connected to the personal Microsoft account that owns the current subscription. Microsoft says the added time is applied to that subscription and the discounted rate begins at the existing subscription’s annual renewal date.
Do not create a second account unless you intentionally want a separate subscription. Buying under the wrong account can split your subscription, installation access and OneDrive data between accounts.

Microsoft says recurring billing is enabled when the Workplace Discount Program subscription begins and that the same discount rate continues while recurring billing remains active. Check the renewal date and amount at Services & subscriptions.

Turning off recurring billing generally stops automatic renewal rather than ending access immediately. Check the expiration date shown in your account. Microsoft says you can renew through its renewal process if recurring billing is canceled.
Microsoft’s FAQ says the Microsoft 365 discount continues while recurring billing is maintained if you leave the employer. That statement should not automatically be extended to Visio, Project, older perpetual purchases, future offers or an employer-provided license; program terms can change.

Install the personal purchase while signed in to the personal account that owns it. Do not assume that a work account’s Microsoft 365 license can be transferred to relatives.
Troubleshooting

| Office has reduced functionality | Check the subscription’s payment method and renewal status. Microsoft identifies an expired or invalid payment method as a possible cause. |
| You need an old product key | Use Microsoft’s Home Use Program order history and the installation instructions for older purchases. |
For current Microsoft 365 subscriptions, Microsoft says no product key is provided: installation and management use the personal Microsoft account. Older Office, Visio and Project purchases may follow a different order-history or product-key process.
Is the discount worth using?
Microsoft 365 Family is the more compelling option when several household members need the apps or associated account benefits. Personal is simpler for one user. Both are subscriptions, so they are a poor fit if your priority is a perpetual, one-time Office license—which the current program does not generally provide.
For occasional document editing, free alternatives such as LibreOffice or Apple’s iWork may be sufficient. Google users may prefer Google Workspace Individual, although it is not a Microsoft Office license and does not qualify through the Workplace Discount Program.
