You do not need to get a PIN in advance: Vanilla Visa Gift Cards have no preassigned PIN. For an in-store purchase, choose Debit at the terminal and enter any four-digit number you choose. Or select Credit to pay without entering a PIN. Vanilla’s FAQ
Choose how to pay at an in-store terminal
When the cashier or payment terminal prompts you, swipe the physical card. If you select Debit, enter a four-digit number of your choice on the keypad. That number is used for the transaction; Vanilla’s instructions do not describe a separate PIN retrieval or enrollment process.
If you do not want to enter a PIN, select Credit instead. The card does not have a PIN printed on it, and Vanilla does not assign one in advance. Vanilla’s FAQ
Use the card online without creating a PIN
Online checkout is different from an in-store keypad. Select Credit or Debit as the payment method—not “Gift Card”—then enter the card details and provide a name and address in the billing-address section. Vanilla’s online instructions do not ask you to create a PIN. Vanilla’s FAQ

If your payment is declined
- Check the available balance. It needs to cover the full purchase, including taxes and shipping.
- Allow for a possible authorization hold. Vanilla says some transaction types may require a hold of up to 20% above the purchase amount. This can make a transaction decline even when the listed purchase price appears to fit the balance. Vanilla’s FAQ
- Contact the issuer about the specific card. For an already-purchased card, Vanilla lists customer care at 1-833-322-6760. Vanilla Visa Gift Cards
Where Vanilla Visa Gift Cards can be used
Vanilla says physical Visa Gift Cards can be used where Visa debit cards are accepted within the United States and District of Columbia. They cannot be used at ATMs or for recurring billing. Funds do not expire, though the card displays a “Valid Through” date for transaction and fraud-protection purposes. Vanilla’s FAQ
