For an Indian resident individual, funding an eligible GIFT City IFSC account for a permitted financial service or product generally means sending money under the Reserve Bank of India’s Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) through an authorised-dealer (AD) bank. Withdrawals and investment redemptions follow the chosen provider’s rules, so get its current written instructions before moving money.
First, identify what kind of account you have
“GIFT City investment account” can mean different things: a foreign-currency account at an IFSC banking unit (IBU), a brokerage or investment-platform account, or an investment in a fund or other product. The route for depositing cash into a bank account is not necessarily the route for subscribing to an investment, and redeeming an investment may involve separate product terms and timelines.
Start with the bank or investment provider. Confirm the specific account, whether your intended transaction is eligible, and the provider’s current funding and withdrawal instructions. The International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) publishes banking regulations and handbook materials and lists IBUs on its banking page. The page marked its banking FAQ “Under review” when checked, so use current rules and confirm operational details directly with the licensed provider.
How an Indian resident can fund an eligible account
The RBI framework allows resident individuals to open foreign-currency accounts in an IFSC for permitted financial services or products. For eligible remittances, the broad route is LRS through an authorised person, such as an AD bank. The rules also cover certain overseas transactions through an IFSC foreign-currency account. This is not permission to use the account for every purpose: a resident individual may not settle domestic transactions with other residents through that account. See the RBI’s directions on resident individuals’ foreign-currency accounts in IFSCs.

Funding workflow
- Check eligibility and account type. Ask the provider whether your account and intended product or service can be funded through the proposed route. Confirm whether the payment is to the IBU itself or to a separate investment provider.
- Get the receiving instructions in writing. Request the beneficiary name and account details, accepted currencies, payment route, required reference, and the purpose description or code to use. The receiving provider’s instructions govern the practical transfer details.
- Coordinate an LRS remittance with your AD bank. RBI’s cited directions require you to designate an AD branch, submit Form A2, and provide PAN. Tell the bank what the remittance is for and ask it to confirm the correct documentation and purpose before sending.
- Check your remaining annual LRS headroom. RBI states an LRS limit of USD 250,000 per resident individual per financial year (April through March). The limit applies to the individual’s LRS remittances in total, not as a separate deposit cap for each GIFT City account. Ask your remitting bank to confirm the amount remaining before you initiate a transfer. See the RBI’s LRS directions.
- Send the transfer and reconcile it. Keep the remittance confirmation and check that the amount has been credited to the intended account or provider. The cited rules and provider example do not establish a universal settlement time.
How to withdraw or repatriate funds
First distinguish a withdrawal of cash already held in an IBU bank account from redemption of an investment. An investment may need to be sold or redeemed before proceeds can be transferred, and the product’s own terms determine that process. Ask the bank or investment provider for its current withdrawal instructions and confirm which currencies and destinations it supports.
Information the provider may request
Forms differ by provider. An ICICI Bank IBU outward-remittance form, version 1.0 effective November 2024, illustrates the kind of information a bank may request: the account to debit, amount, whether currency conversion is needed, charge instructions, beneficiary and bank details, and the remittance purpose. It also includes full or partial repatriation and options associated with term-deposit closure. These are examples from one provider’s form, not universal requirements. Review the current form and instructions from your own provider: ICICI Bank IBU outward-remittance form.

Before submitting a withdrawal request
- Confirm the beneficiary name, account number, address, bank and branch details, and any SWIFT or other routing information the provider requires.
- Ask whether the transfer will be sent in the account’s existing currency or converted. Confirm the exchange-rate basis and any bank or intermediary charges.
- Request the expected processing time, applicable cutoffs, supporting documents, and any tax or regulatory declarations for your transaction. The reviewed materials do not establish a universal fee schedule or transfer time.
- If the money is in a term deposit, check maturity and premature-closure conditions, and whether proceeds must first be credited to a linked account.
- If the money is in an investment, check redemption eligibility, timing, charges, and how proceeds reach the bank account before arranging an outward transfer.
Compare providers on the terms that affect your money
There is no consistent multi-bank comparison in the available provider materials, so compare the specific terms in writing rather than assuming that all IBUs work alike.
- Eligibility, account type, and minimum balance.
- Supported currencies and accepted funding routes.
- Permitted withdrawal destinations and the request process.
- Bank, correspondent-bank, and foreign-exchange charges.
- Processing cutoffs and expected settlement times.
- Deposit maturity, premature-closure, and account-closure terms.
- Required documents and available service channels.
- Any deposit-protection disclosure applicable to the chosen account.
Check account restrictions and disclosures
RBI’s restriction on domestic resident-to-resident settlement through a resident individual’s IFSC foreign-currency account is separate from the LRS funding process. Do not assume that having an account permits a transaction that the rules restrict.

Deposit protection also needs to be checked with the actual provider. Federal Bank’s IBU savings/current-account opening form states that its IBU deposits are not covered by deposit insurance. That is Federal Bank’s disclosure for its account, not evidence of the protection status of every GIFT City account. Read the chosen provider’s current terms and disclosures: Federal Bank IBU GIFT City account opening form.
