If a QR code scans but opens the wrong page, first check the URL shown in your camera preview and do not enter information until you trust the destination. The fix depends on what the code points to: a static code must usually be replaced, while a dynamic redirect or a URL on a domain you control may be corrected without changing the printed code.
Check the destination before opening it
Scanning confirms that your phone can read the pattern; it does not confirm that the link or page is legitimate. Read the URL in the camera preview and compare its spelling and domain with the organization you expected. The FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center advises checking that a scanned URL is the intended site and looks authentic. The Federal Trade Commission also recommends checking the preview for misspellings or switched letters.
- For a physical code, look for a sticker placed over the original or other signs that the code was altered.
- If the URL is unfamiliar, misspelled, or unrelated to the expected organization, close the preview rather than proceeding.
- Verify the intended destination through a website or phone number you already trust, not contact details on the unexpected page.
Work out whether the code is static or redirect-based
Look at the first URL shown in the camera preview. A static QR code stores its destination directly in the pattern. A dynamic QR code stores a redirect URL that sends the scan onward to a destination managed separately. A short or unfamiliar URL alone does not prove that you control the redirect; the key question is who owns the domain or account that receives the scan.
Hovercode’s help documentation explains that a static code’s destination is encoded in its pattern, while a dynamic code uses a redirect link whose destination can be updated separately: Static vs. dynamic QR codes.

Choose the fix that matches the code
| What the code points to | What to do | Can the existing pattern stay? |
|---|---|---|
| A static code with an incorrect destination | Create a new QR code with the correct URL and replace the old image or printed label. | No. The encoded destination cannot be changed after the code is created. |
| A dynamic redirect you manage | Sign in to the redirect service or update the redirect on your server, then set the intended destination. | Usually, provided you retain control of the redirect and its service or server. |
| A URL on your own website, but the page has moved | Restore the page at the encoded address or configure a redirect from that address to the correct page. | Often. The existing code can continue to reach the encoded URL, which then serves or redirects to the right page. |
| A code or redirect owned by someone else | Contact the code owner or redirect administrator and ask them to correct the destination. | Only if the owner updates the destination or redirect. |
| A physical code that appears covered or replaced | Do not use it; report the altered code to the venue or organization responsible for it. | Replacing the physical code is for the owner to arrange. |
A static code cannot be turned into an editable dynamic code after it has been printed. For a redirect-based code, changing the final destination depends on continued access to the account or server that controls the redirect.
Verify the repair
- Scan the code again with your phone’s built-in camera and inspect the URL preview.
- Confirm that the preview shows the expected domain or a redirect you deliberately control.
- Open it only after that check, then confirm the final page is the one intended.
If another person or organization owns the code, your scanner cannot edit its encoded data or take control of its redirect.

For a GS1 Digital Link QR code
GS1 Digital Link codes are a specific system for linking product identifiers to online information. GS1 explains that a product’s identity can remain distinct from the location of information about it, with redirection managed through web or cloud infrastructure. Its guidance recommends a temporary HTTP 303 redirect when a destination is expected to change; this is guidance for GS1 Digital Link implementations, not a universal requirement for ordinary QR codes. See GS1 AISBL, “Redirection: from scan to content” (2024).
Reduce risk if the page looked suspicious
Unexpected destinations can result from a typo, an outdated page, a misconfigured redirect, or a substituted physical code; the scan itself does not establish which happened. The FBI/IC3 advises using a phone’s built-in scanner rather than downloading QR scanner apps, and warns about QR-linked app downloads. Do not enter login, personal, or payment details on a page until you have verified it independently. For a payment, go directly to a known website or contact the organization using independently verified details.

If you need to change a destination later, a dynamic code can help, but it introduces a dependency on the redirect domain, account, or service. Before choosing that setup, check who will control the redirect, whether it can point to the domain you need, what happens if the account or provider becomes unavailable, and how you can update and test the destination. A static code avoids that redirect dependency but fixes the destination in the pattern, so a change means replacing the code wherever it appears.
