How to Find Japan Airlines Award Seats Before Transferring Points

JAL’s award calendar can help you find promising dates, but confirm the exact flight—and search the intended partner program separately—before transferring points.

Yes—you can check Japan Airlines (JAL) award availability before transferring points. Start with JAL Mileage Bank’s International Award Ticket Seat Availability Check Calendar to explore JAL-operated international flights, then verify the exact flight in the booking flow. The calendar is an estimate based on the previous day’s availability, not a live guarantee. If you plan to book through another airline’s miles, search that program separately: a seat shown by JAL is not proof that a partner can book it.

Choose the loyalty program you plan to use

First decide whether you intend to book with JAL Mileage Bank (JMB) miles or another airline’s miles. JAL’s International Award Ticket Seat Availability Check Calendar is for JAL International Award Tickets. It helps you explore JAL-operated flights, but it does not establish that another airline’s program has the same award inventory, pricing, or route eligibility.

JAL publishes a list of partner airlines, including oneworld members and other partners. That list is context, not a guarantee that a particular route or flight can be booked with every partner’s miles. For a partner booking, use the intended program’s own award search and rules.

Search JAL’s calendar with flexible dates

  1. Open JAL’s International Award Ticket Seat Availability Check Calendar.
  2. Choose one-way travel, the route, cabin, and a date or date range.
  3. Compare the dates and mileage levels shown. JAL recommends one-way searches when exploring dates and required mileage; search the return direction separately if you need a round trip.

The calendar states that its seat-availability and mileage information is an estimate based on the previous day’s availability. A date shown there can change before you book, so treat the calendar as a way to find promising dates—not confirmation that a seat remains available.

Verify the exact flight before deciding to transfer

Continue into JAL’s booking flow and check the specific flight, cabin, passenger count, and required miles. Do not base a transfer decision on a calendar result alone. If you will use another airline’s currency, search that airline’s booking channel for the same itinerary; availability through JAL does not prove partner availability.

For JMB partner awards, JAL says every flight in the itinerary must be open for booking before you submit the request, and the required JMB mileage must already be in your account when you reserve. JMB partner awards cannot be waitlisted. See JAL’s partner-award booking rules for the applicable conditions.

Check the booking window, miles, and cash charges

JAL’s published booking window for international awards is 360 days before departure. JAL says its own international award requests open at 00:00 Japan time; for round-trip JAL awards, the return date determines when the request window opens. JAL’s partner-award guidance also describes a 360-day window but notes that some partners may accept bookings within a shorter period. These are booking-window rules, not promises that seats will be available. Confirm the relevant dates and deadlines with JAL or the program you will use.

JAL calculates partner-award mileage based on the itinerary’s total distance and service class. Airport taxes and fuel, insurance, or other surcharges may also be payable. Compare the complete cost—not just the miles—before committing. JAL’s partner guidance lists a request deadline of 48 hours before the first sector for website requests and 24 hours before the first sector for phone requests; check the current rules before relying on those deadlines.

Confirm your points transfer terms before initiating one

Transfer options depend on the bank or card rewards program, the country, and the airline loyalty program. The JAL rules do not establish whether your particular rewards account can transfer to the program you intend to use, how many points are required, or how long a transfer takes. Check those details directly with your rewards provider and the booking program. Also review change and cancellation rules before transferring; they are determined by the program and ticket you choose.

  • Confirm that your rewards account can transfer to the intended airline program.
  • Check the transfer ratio, minimum, and expected transfer time with your provider.
  • Confirm award availability and the required miles through the program that will issue the ticket.
  • Check taxes, surcharges, and change or cancellation terms before moving points.

Because a JMB partner reservation requires sufficient miles in the account when you book, transferring before verifying the booking path can leave you with miles in a program that cannot secure the flight you want.
