Nike positions Structure for supportive cushioning, Pegasus for responsive cushioning and Vomero for maximum cushioning; those are family descriptions, not independent test results or a ranking. There is no single best model for every runner, so treat those labels as a shortlist and check the fit and details of the specific shoe.
1. Start with where and how you run
Match the shoe category to the surface and job before comparing model names. Nike’s running-shoe guide distinguishes road, trail and racing shoes:
- Road running: Consider road shoes for pavement and other hard surfaces. The Structure 26, for example, is listed as a road-running shoe.
- Trail running: For uneven off-road terrain, look for trail shoes designed with traction and durability in mind. Nike’s trail-running guide emphasizes stability, traction and fit on uneven ground. How technical the route is should shape how much tread and protection you seek.
- Racing: Racing shoes are specialized and lighter, according to Nike’s guide, but Nike also notes trade-offs in durability and shock absorption. Consider them for race day or speed work rather than assuming they are the right choice for all training.
A shoe’s appearance or cushioning label cannot tell you whether it is suited to your route. Confirm the intended surface and use on the individual product page.
2. Check fit before choosing a cushioning style
Nike’s general fit checks are practical starting points: your toes should move without pressure points, the heel should feel secure without pinching, and there should be about a thumb-width of space in front of your toes. These are checks for comfort, not a universal size-conversion rule. Try the shoe if you can, and follow the fit information on its own listing.
#1 Best Overall
For example, Nike’s Structure 26 men’s product page says, “Fits small; we recommend ordering a half size up.” That advice is specific to this model and listing; do not apply it automatically to other Nike shoes.
3. Compare Nike’s three cushioning families
Nike’s Running category uses these broad family labels:
Rank #2
- Ideal for Gifting
- Ideal for a bookworm
- Compact for travelling
| Family | Nike’s positioning | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | Supportive cushioning | Whether you prefer a guided, steady feel, and whether the specific model fits comfortably. |
| Pegasus | Responsive cushioning | Whether the particular shoe’s cushioning and response suit your daily training and pace. |
| Vomero | Maximum cushioning | Whether you prefer a more cushioned feel for the runs you do. |
These labels reflect Nike’s own product positioning, not results from an independent head-to-head comparison. Model names, product details and availability can change and vary by region, so compare the current listing for the exact shoe you are considering.
4. Think about support without trying to diagnose your gait
Nike’s guide associates stability shoes with overpronation and neutral shoes with a neutral gait. Its Structure 26 description identifies a midfoot support system and a guided, steady ride. That is product guidance, not a personal gait assessment or evidence that the shoe prevents or treats injury. If you have persistent pain or a medical concern, seek qualified advice rather than relying on a shopping guide to diagnose what you need.

5. Read specifications in their stated context
The Structure 26 men’s listing gives an approximate weight of 320 g (11.3 oz) for a men’s US size 10 and a 10 mm heel-to-toe drop. Those figures describe that model and stated size; they are not category averages and do not support a weight ranking across Structure, Pegasus and Vomero families. The same page describes ReactX foam and a midfoot support system.
Nike’s product FAQ says ReactX is “13% more responsive than previous React technology.” This is Nike’s stated product claim, not an independent comparative test result. Use product specifications to understand one model, not to infer how it will feel on your foot.
Rank #4
6. Use the Shoe Finder to build a shortlist
Nike’s Running page offers a Running Shoe Finder that asks questions to help identify shoes for a runner’s style. Treat its result as a starting shortlist. Before deciding, check each candidate’s current model description, sizing and available widths, and confirm it is intended for your surface.
Fit preferences often take experience to understand. Nike’s running-shoe guide quotes USATF-certified coach Jason Fitzgerald: “Only experience and a lot of trial and error will help runners understand their preferences and the type of shoe they prefer.” If your first shortlist does not feel comfortable in a try-on, use what you learned to compare another model rather than forcing the choice.
