If your Metro by T-Mobile phone is lost, stolen, damaged, or malfunctioning, start by checking that Metro Protection covered that device on the date of the incident. Then file through the official Metro claim portal, which is administered through Assurant—not as a regular Metro store return. If the phone is missing, suspend its service first. Your eligibility, claim limit, fee, and repair or replacement options depend on your enrolled plan, device, state, and coverage documents.
Is this a MetroPCS or Metro by T-Mobile claim?
MetroPCS is the former, familiar name; the current brand is Metro by T-Mobile. Older receipts and account records may still say MetroPCS, while current protection and claims materials may refer to Metro Protection, Assurant, or Fastclaim. The names do not mean every historical plan has the same terms as a current plan.
For current Metro Protection, Assurant handles the claim workflow. Check Metro’s protection page and your enrollment documents to identify the plan actually attached to your device. If your documents name a different administrator, follow those documents rather than assuming the current portal or rules apply.
First, identify the kind of problem
- Lost or stolen: Suspend the missing phone’s service with Metro, then check loss/theft coverage.
- Cracked, dropped, or wet: Check accidental-damage coverage. Eligible smartphones may have a separate front-screen-only repair option under some plans.
- Won’t work or has a defect: Check the manufacturer’s warranty first, then see whether the failure fits your plan’s mechanical/electrical coverage.
- No protection charge or documents: Verify enrollment before expecting an insurance claim. A Metro phone is not automatically covered.
Metro Protection describes coverage for loss, theft, accidental damage such as drops, cracks and liquid damage, and certain mechanical or electrical failures, including some failures after the manufacturer’s warranty expires. Coverage remains subject to the plan’s definitions, exclusions, and conditions. An aging battery or cosmetic wear, for example, is not automatically a covered failure.

Check coverage and limits before filing
Confirm the enrolled plan
Look for a protection-plan charge on your Metro bill, check your Metro account or Metro Protection app, and review your enrollment documents. Assurant’s FAQ says coverage documents can be accessed through the site’s My Documents area by entering the mobile number. Save your copy; online availability may be limited after enrollment.
Current enrollment information generally requires adding protection within 30 days of a qualifying device purchase, activation, upgrade, or bring-your-own-device event, and an in-store visual mechanical inspection may be required. That is an enrollment window, not permission to insure an incident after it has already happened.
Understand the plan differences
Assurant’s current plan materials describe the following for non-New York customers. Limits and benefits can depend on the customer’s actual documents, device, and applicable rules.
| Plan | Loss/theft and accidental-damage claims | Mechanical/electrical | Front-screen-only repair | Other listed benefits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Metro Complete Protection | Unlimited claims described | Unlimited claims described | $0 for eligible smartphones | Live tech support, McAfee security, Scam Shield Premium |
| Metro Advanced Protection | Up to 5 in a rolling 12-month period | Covered, subject to plan rules | Typically $20–$29, depending on device tier | Live tech support and McAfee security |
| Metro Basic Protection | Up to 1 in a rolling 12-month period | Covered, subject to plan rules | Not included | Metro Protection app |
These are plan summaries, not a substitute for your certificate or terms. New York customers may have a different product, Premium Handset Protection; do not apply the table to that product without checking its documents. Puerto Rico uses a separate portal and program information at Metro Protection Puerto Rico.

Look up your own fees, not a generic deductible
A monthly premium is different from the amount due when a claim is approved. In Assurant’s published materials, Complete Protection lists accidental-damage and mechanical/electrical service fees of $10–$90 and loss/theft deductibles of $20–$275, depending on device tier. Advanced Protection lists service fees of $20–$175 and loss/theft deductibles of $20–$275. Basic Protection’s listed loss/theft and service-fee ranges are $20–$275, depending on device tier and incident. The applicable amount is not determined by plan name alone.
Complete Protection lists $0 front-screen-only repair for eligible smartphones; Advanced lists $20–$29 depending on tier. Check the device-specific deductible and fee lookup and the amount quoted during your claim. Your own coverage document controls if a summary page differs.
For examples of monthly premiums, the published FAQ lists Tier 1 pricing of $10 for Complete, $6 for Advanced, and $3 for Basic; Tier 5 and BYOD examples are $16, $12, and $6 respectively. These are device-tier examples, and taxes may apply; they are not universal prices. See the program information for current plan details.
What to do if the phone is lost or stolen
- Contact Metro at 1-888-8-METRO-8 (1-888-863-8768), or dial *611 from a Metro phone, and ask to suspend service on the missing device.
- Use Apple Find My, Google Find My Device, or the manufacturer’s account tools if appropriate. Change important passwords if someone may be able to access the phone.
- Report the event accurately in the claim. Do not say a lost phone was stolen or invent details. A police report or proof-of-loss document may be requested in some cases, but it is not established as a universal requirement.
Metro’s claim-help instructions specifically direct customers to contact Metro to suspend service for a lost or stolen device. A remote wipe may protect your data, but it does not replace filing the claim or following the administrator’s instructions.

Gather the details the claim may ask for
The primary account holder or an authorized user may file, according to the claim-help page. Have these items ready:
- Metro wireless number associated with the device and the account-holder or authorized-user information.
- Phone make and model, plus IMEI, ESN, or MEID if available.
- Date of incident and a clear, accurate description of what happened.
- Account PIN or security-answer information and contact details.
- Government-issued ID if requested during identity verification.
- A credit card, debit card, or eCheck for a quoted deductible or service fee.
- A shipping address if a replacement is arranged.
- Police report or proof-of-loss material if the administrator requests it.
If the phone is unavailable and you do not know its IMEI, check its original box, purchase receipt, Metro account, or device settings if it still works. Dialing *#06# may display it on supported phones. The Assurant FAQ lists these ways to locate an IMEI.
File the claim through the official route
- Open the portal. Go to fastclaim.com/metro and choose “File, Continue or Track My Claim.” The Metro Protection app is another route if you already use it. If online filing fails, use the phone number in your coverage documents.
- Identify the line and device. Enter the requested Metro number or device identifier. If more than one device is associated with the number, the portal may ask for the IMEI. Confirm that the number and device match the phone involved in the incident.
- Verify the incident date. Enter the date the event occurred and check it carefully before submitting. The portal warns that the date cannot be changed after submission.
- Select the accurate incident type. Choose loss, theft, accidental damage, mechanical/electrical failure, or a front-screen repair option if it is available for your plan and device. The category affects eligibility and the fee. Do not label accidental or liquid damage as a mechanical failure.
- Complete the account and identity questions. Provide the requested incident, device, account, and contact details. Be prepared for an identity check or ID scan to verify that an authorized person is using the benefit.
- Review the decision and terms before paying. Confirm approval status, repair or replacement outcome, deductible or service fee, any tax, shipping or appointment details, and whether the original device must be returned. A deductible generally applies to approved loss/theft claims; service fees generally apply to approved accidental-damage, mechanical/electrical, or screen-repair claims.
- Save the confirmation. Keep the claim number, confirmation email, payment receipt, tracking number, appointment information, and any return instructions or deadlines.
What may happen after approval
Repair or replacement
Depending on eligibility and availability, Assurant may arrange an authorized repair, a front-screen repair, or a replacement. The Assurant FAQ says replacement devices are generally reconditioned devices of like type and quality; if a suitable reconditioned device is unavailable, a new device of like type and quality may be supplied. Do not assume the replacement will be factory-new, the same color, or an identical configuration. Replacement devices carry a 180-day limited warranty, or the original manufacturer’s warranty in the case of a new device.
Delivery timing
The portal advertises expected next-day delivery for claims approved Monday through Friday before 8:30 p.m. Eastern Time. For claims approved Saturday or Sunday before 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, it advertises expected delivery the following Tuesday. These are expectations, not guarantees; inventory, address validation, weather, carrier delays, investigation, or other complications can change timing.

Returning a damaged phone
If an accidental-damage replacement requires return of the original device, follow the supplied label and packaging instructions; use the claim’s stated deadline rather than assuming a universal return period. Before sending a functioning phone, back up your data, remove SIM or memory cards unless instructed otherwise, sign out of Apple, Google, Samsung, or other accounts, and disable activation locks or Find My features when instructed. Photograph the device and package, and keep the shipping receipt and tracking information.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Special cases and common snags
Mechanical failure versus manufacturer warranty
A manufacturer warranty generally addresses defects, not drops, spills, loss, or theft. If the phone has a defect and remains under manufacturer warranty, check that route before filing a protection claim. Also check separately purchased AppleCare or other manufacturer coverage. Metro Protection mechanical/electrical coverage is subject to the plan’s covered-failure definition and exclusions; it does not automatically cover normal wear, unauthorized repairs, intentional damage, or an issue covered by another warranty.
Liquid damage or screen-only damage
Report liquid exposure as accidental damage and follow the portal’s prompts. For a cracked screen with no other damage, check whether the device qualifies for screen-only repair under the enrolled plan. The $0 option applies only to eligible smartphones on Complete Protection; Advanced has a listed fee by tier, while Basic does not include the benefit.
Incorrect number or IMEI
Stop and verify the line and device if the portal rejects the information. Common causes include using a replacement phone’s number instead of the line associated with the incident, selecting another family-account line, entering an IMEI for a different device, or an upgrade or device swap that was not reflected in coverage records. Repeated submissions with mismatched identifiers are unlikely to fix the underlying mismatch; check account and enrollment records, then contact the administrator.

Claim filed late
The public FAQ encourages prompt filing but does not establish one deadline for every Metro Protection plan. Check your coverage documents for the applicable filing period. Do not assume a 60-day deadline found on a separate Asurion-administered Metro claims page applies to an Assurant/Fastclaim plan.
Claim delayed, rejected, or blocked online
- Read the stated reason or portal error carefully.
- Confirm that coverage was active on the incident date and that the device and line match the enrollment record.
- Check that the incident category and date are accurate; the date may not be editable after submission.
- Provide clearer documents or complete identity steps if requested.
- Contact Assurant through the claim portal or the number in your coverage documents. Ask about the formal appeal or dispute process if the claim was denied.
- If the matter concerns regulated insurance coverage, consider contacting your state insurance regulator after using the administrator’s process.
Metro retail employees are not guaranteed to be able to override an Assurant decision; claim-help materials direct claim questions to the administrator. If your documents identify a different administrator, use that plan’s official contact route.
Before you submit: final checks
- Protection was active for this device when the incident happened.
- The correct Metro line, device, IMEI, incident date, and event type are entered.
- You are the primary account holder or an authorized user.
- You have reviewed the device-specific fee and can pay the amount quoted if approved.
- You have saved claim documents and are ready to follow repair, delivery, and return instructions.
For an older or lower-value phone, compare the quoted fee and any tax with an independent repair or used replacement cost before proceeding. A claim also does not automatically erase an existing Metro bill or device-financing balance.
