To preserve browser bookmarks, export them as a file—usually HTML—and keep a separate copy somewhere you can find later. The exact route depends on where the links are saved: Chrome, Firefox and Safari have distinct export options, while Safari on iPhone uses a separate ZIP-based flow. If you use a saved-link manager, check its own backup tools.
Choose the export that matches where your links are saved
A bookmark export is a file copy of browser bookmarks. It is useful for moving bookmarks to another browser or keeping a separate backup. An account-wide data export is a different process and may cover a wider set of account information. Before exporting, identify which browser or service holds the links you want to preserve.
| Where your links are saved | Documented route and format | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Chrome bookmarks | Chrome documents bookmark export as an HTML file. See Chrome’s bookmark and import help. | Saving browser bookmarks or moving them into another browser. |
| Google Account data | Google separately documents downloading account data, including bookmarks. See Chrome’s account-data export help. | Exporting bookmarks as part of an account-data download rather than using the browser’s bookmark export. |
| Firefox bookmarks | Mozilla documents exporting bookmarks to HTML. See Firefox import and export help. | Keeping a bookmark backup or importing bookmarks into another browser. |
| Safari on Mac | Apple documents bookmark exports as HTML using the Netscape Bookmarks file format. See Apple Developer Documentation. | Keeping or transferring desktop Safari bookmarks in a portable format. |
| Safari on iPhone | Apple describes exporting selected Safari data to another browser as a ZIP file saved in Downloads. The flow and available data depend on the supported iOS version. See Apple’s iPhone guide. | Moving selected Safari data from an iPhone to another browser. |
| Microsoft Edge | Microsoft’s cited support page confirms importing favorites from an HTML file, but does not establish Edge’s current export steps. See Microsoft Support. | Importing a bookmark HTML file into Edge; consult current Edge guidance for export. |
| Saved-link manager such as Raindrop.io | Raindrop materials describe backup endpoints and HTML, CSV and text export options; verify current availability in the service. See its backup API documentation, backup and CSV post and subset-export post. | Managing links outside a browser or exporting a collection in a service-supported format. |
Export bookmarks from your browser or service
Chrome
For a browser-level bookmark file, follow the current steps in Chrome’s bookmark and import help. Chrome documents this export as HTML, a format intended for bookmark transfer or backup. If you instead want bookmarks included in a broader download of Google Account information, use the separate account-data export instructions.
Firefox
Mozilla’s Firefox help explains how to export bookmarks as HTML for backup or import into another browser. Follow its current interface instructions, since menus can change between versions.
#1 Best Overall
Safari on Mac
Safari’s desktop bookmark export is HTML in the Netscape Bookmarks file format, according to Apple Developer Documentation. Use Apple’s current documentation for the applicable Safari and macOS workflow.
Safari on iPhone
Do not treat the iPhone process as the same as Mac bookmark export. Apple’s iPhone guide describes exporting selected Safari data to another browser and saving the result as a ZIP file in Downloads. Follow the guide for your supported iOS version; the available data and flow are platform- and version-dependent.

Microsoft Edge
The cited Microsoft Support page establishes how Edge imports favorites from an HTML file, not how to export them. Check Microsoft’s live Edge instructions for the current export procedure rather than relying on an assumed menu path.
Saved-link managers
A link manager may offer its own backup schedule or let you export a collection in one or more formats. Raindrop.io’s published materials describe backup API endpoints and HTML, CSV and text exports, including exports of subsets. Those materials do not guarantee that every option is available in every account or remains unchanged; check the service’s current controls and documentation before relying on a particular route.

Choose a format and keep a usable backup
For browser-to-browser transfer, HTML is the format documented by Chrome and Firefox and by Apple for Safari on Mac. Safari on iPhone’s described export is a ZIP archive, which is distinct from a desktop bookmark HTML file. CSV or text can be useful when a saved-link service offers them, but the sources cited here do not establish that those formats can be imported directly into every browser.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
Rank #4
- Export from the place that owns the links. Select the browser’s bookmark export for browser bookmarks; use an account-data export only when you want the broader account download.
- Confirm the file was saved. Check the chosen save location, such as Downloads, and note whether the result is HTML or ZIP.
- Keep a second copy if you need an offline backup. You can copy the exported file to removable storage, such as a USB flash drive. This is optional storage, not a requirement of browser export.
- Verify recovery before depending on the file. When practical, import the export into a browser or service that supports its format and confirm the links appear. Do not assume an export is restorable merely because a file was created.
What to do if the export does not meet your need
- You need bookmarks from more than one place: export each browser or service separately; one browser’s bookmark export does not automatically include a saved-link manager’s collection.
- You are moving links into Edge: Microsoft documents HTML import, but the cited page does not establish Edge’s current export steps. Use current Edge guidance for exporting before relying on a particular procedure.
- You have Safari on iPhone, not Mac: follow Apple’s iPhone-specific ZIP workflow rather than looking for a Mac-style HTML export.
- You need an account-wide download: distinguish Chrome’s bookmark file export from Google Account data export and choose the route matching your scope.
- Your manager’s export options differ: consult its live documentation and account controls; published feature posts may not describe current availability for every user.
