Finally, ask what future results the share price assumes and how exposed the business is to customers, infrastructure spending, and other risks. “AI exposure” alone does not establish that a company is growing profitably or that its stock is attractively valued.
How do I evaluate AI stocks?
Use the same sequence for each company: locate its role in the AI supply chain, verify the source and quality of growth, account for the investment needed to produce that growth, assess the expectations reflected in the price, and map the risks—including overlaps with the rest of your portfolio.
Start with the company’s place in the AI economy
AI-related businesses span several connected layers: chip designers, cloud providers, infrastructure suppliers, and companies adding AI features to existing products. Their economics differ. A chip designer may depend on product demand, manufacturing supply, and customers’ ability to install equipment. A cloud provider may need to invest heavily in data centers and power. A company incorporating AI into an established product may have a different challenge: converting a feature into revenue without undermining the economics of its existing business.
For each company, identify the specific product or service, the customers who pay for it, and the reported segment where sales appear. Kiplinger’s October 1, 2026 commentary on the AI supply chain is one example of how spending by large cloud providers can connect several supplier layers; it is a reminder to trace business relationships rather than treating AI companies as isolated bets.

Separate evidence of adoption from evidence of monetization
Customer interest, product usage, or management’s description of a product as AI-related does not by itself establish how much revenue AI generates. Look for a separately reported AI revenue figure. If the company does not disclose one, say so and do not infer AI sales from growth in a broad segment or from AI-related language.
Alphabet’s 2025 Form 10-K provides a company-specific example of why the distinction matters: it says products such as AI Overviews, AI Mode in Search, and enterprise AI offerings may monetize differently from historical consumer and enterprise products, potentially affecting revenue growth and margin trends. Alphabet also says it prioritizes user experience before monetization when developing new offerings. Those disclosures describe Alphabet’s own circumstances, not a universal pattern for AI businesses.
How do you tell whether AI revenue growth is real?
Begin with reported revenue over multiple periods, then investigate what drove it. A useful test is whether growth is broad, repeatable, and economically productive—or dependent on a narrow set of customers, a temporary supply imbalance, acquisitions, or spending that is rising faster than sales.
Check reported growth and its source
- Compare revenue across several reporting periods and inspect the relevant business segment, not just a company-wide growth rate.
- Separate organic growth from acquired growth where the company discloses the distinction.
- Read management’s explanation alongside the filing’s segment results and risk disclosures. Note customer or product concentration where it is reported.
- Distinguish demand from recognized sales: a company may have strong customer interest but still face constraints on supply, delivery, installation, or a buyer’s ability to deploy equipment.
NVIDIA’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended July 26, 2026, says growth in fiscal 2027’s second quarter and first half was driven by data-center products for accelerated computing and AI solutions. The filing also discusses supply constraints and the risk that demand estimates may be inaccurate. That makes the timing and capacity to deliver relevant to interpreting sales growth, rather than treating demand estimates as completed revenue.

Test whether revenue growth is producing returns
Read revenue alongside gross margin, operating margin, operating cash flow, capital expenditure, and free cash flow. Rising sales can be less compelling if each additional dollar requires disproportionately more infrastructure, research and development, or working capital. Conversely, temporary investment can be rational if it supports durable returns; the key is to determine what the company is spending, why, and whether the resulting economics are becoming clearer over time.
Alphabet’s 2025 Form 10-K says AI requires more compute power than its historical offerings and describes expected increases in infrastructure operating costs, including depreciation, energy, equipment, and network capacity. The practical question is whether incremental AI revenue can outpace the added cost and capital required to provide it.
NVIDIA reported gross margin of 75.0% in fiscal 2027 Q2, compared with 72.4% in fiscal 2026 Q2, and attributed the increase in part to product mix. These are company- and period-specific figures from its 2026 Form 10-Q, not a benchmark for other AI companies or a guarantee of future margins.
Are AI stocks overvalued?
There is no single valuation multiple that answers that question for every company, and a high-growth theme does not make all its stocks either overvalued or undervalued. Valuation asks what price is being paid for uncertain future business results. Interpret a multiple using the company’s expected growth, margins, reinvestment needs, dilution, and balance-sheet risks—and specify the price date, financial period, and accounting basis.

Know what the common measures compare
| Measure | What it compares | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Price-to-earnings (P/E) | Share price to earnings per share, or market capitalization to net income. | Whether earnings are positive and whether the period is trailing or forecast. Check how unusual items and share dilution affect earnings per share. |
| Price-to-sales (P/S) | Market capitalization to revenue. | Sales do not show profitability on their own. Compare companies only if their business models, growth, and margins make the comparison meaningful. |
| Enterprise value to EBITDA (EV/EBITDA) | Enterprise value—typically equity value plus debt, less cash—to earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization. | EBITDA excludes substantial costs, including depreciation, which can matter for capital-intensive infrastructure businesses. Check consistency in how the figures are calculated. |
| Free-cash-flow yield | Free cash flow divided by market capitalization, expressed as a percentage. | Define the period and the company’s free-cash-flow calculation. A low or negative yield may reflect investment or weak cash generation; interpret it with the business context. |
Translate the price into expectations
Instead of asking only whether a multiple looks high, ask what growth, margins, and competitive durability would be needed to justify the price. Consider at least a base case and a weaker case: What if customer spending slows, deployment takes longer, margins narrow, or competitors limit pricing power? The exercise is not a precise forecast; it makes the assumptions embedded in a valuation visible.
The Bank for International Settlements’ 2026 Annual Economic Report describes elevated valuations for firms at the core of AI development and implied long-term earnings growth for large corporations above historical benchmarks. It also notes that sustaining high growth can become more difficult as companies mature and command a larger market share. This institutional assessment supports examining expectations; it does not establish that every AI stock is overvalued.
What risks should I check before investing in AI companies?
Review company filings for risks that could interrupt growth or change its economics. The relevant risks vary by company, so connect each one to the business model and the source of revenue rather than applying a generic checklist mechanically.
Customers, capacity, and counterparties
Customer concentration can make results sensitive to a small number of purchasing decisions. NVIDIA’s 2026 Form 10-Q reports that one direct customer accounted for 16% of total revenue in fiscal 2027 Q2. For the first half of fiscal 2027, three direct customers accounted for 16%, 15%, and 13%, respectively. NVIDIA also says it generates significant revenue from a limited number of indirect customers, some of which may individually account for at least 10% of revenue. These disclosures describe NVIDIA in the specified periods; they are not industry-wide statistics.

The same filing identifies customer infrastructure availability and access to capital as possible constraints on deployment and revenue. For companies in the broader chain, check whether buyers have the land, power, data-center capacity, financing, and equipment needed to put purchases to work—and whether the supplier can meet demand without costly delays.
Partnerships and cloud dependence
Partnerships can provide access to capital, technology, computing resources, or distribution, but their terms can also shape where a customer spends and how easily it can switch providers. The Federal Trade Commission’s January 2025 summary of its study of partnerships between large cloud providers and AI developers describes arrangements involving equity and revenue-sharing rights, consultation, control or exclusivity terms, and commitments for AI developers to spend a substantial portion of partner investment on that provider’s cloud services. The FTC identifies possible effects on computing and talent access, switching costs, and sensitive information. Those findings concern the arrangements studied; they should not be assumed to describe every partnership.
Competition, infrastructure, and execution
- Competition and monetization: consider whether established products or new AI offerings can retain users and earn revenue without weakening existing economics. Alphabet’s 2025 Form 10-K discusses competition from AI product providers and uncertainty around monetization.
- Supply and build-out: look for dependencies on equipment, land, data-center shells, power, network capacity, and the ability to expand infrastructure on time.
- Capital requirements: assess whether continued growth depends on substantial spending or external financing, and whether returns justify those needs.
- Regulation, intellectual property, and execution: check the company’s own disclosures for legal or operational issues that could affect product availability, costs, or customer adoption.
The BIS 2026 Annual Economic Report also warns that an AI investment reversal could have wider financial consequences in the context of rising leverage and AI firms’ footprint in credit markets. It notes potential exposure among suppliers, including comparatively weakly capitalized engineering, procurement, and construction contractors, and discusses the possibility of asset-price pullbacks if exuberant risk-taking or inflation-related rate tightening shifts. These are system-level risks, not a forecast that a reversal will occur.

Count economic exposures, not just tickers. Several different holdings may depend on the same hyperscaler capital-spending cycle, a small set of buyers, shared suppliers, or the same cloud partner. A slowdown in one major spending program can therefore affect businesses at multiple layers of the AI supply chain.

When reviewing a fund, inspect its current holdings and weights in the fund’s own documents rather than assuming its name tells you how concentrated it is. Kiplinger’s October 1, 2026 commentary notes that market-cap-weighted funds can become more exposed to companies whose share prices have risen. The implications for an individual portfolio depend on its actual holdings and weights, which can change over time.
What checklist can I use to compare two AI companies?
Fill this in using the same reporting periods and definitions for both businesses. Where a company has not separately disclosed AI revenue, record that the amount is not separately quantified in the cited company material; do not estimate it from a broader segment.
- Business position: What AI-related product or service is sold, to whom, and in which reported segment?
- Growth quality: What is driving revenue, how concentrated are customers and products, and is sales growth converting into margin and cash?
- Reinvestment: What capital expenditure, infrastructure, research and development, or working capital is required to sustain growth?
- Competitive position: What alternatives do customers have, and what evidence supports adoption and pricing power?
- Valuation: What future growth and margins appear necessary to justify the price on a dated, consistently defined basis?
- Risk: How sensitive is the business to weaker customer spending, slower deployment, supply limits, regulation, or execution problems?
- Portfolio fit: Do other holdings rely on the same buyers, suppliers, cloud partners, or infrastructure spending?
This framework is for evaluating business evidence and investment assumptions, not a recommendation to buy or sell any security.
