How to Do the Cash App Glitch? What the Viral Claim Really Means

The viral Cash App glitch claim was not a verified way to get free money. Learn how fake update links, money-flipping pitches, and payment requests can put your account at risk.

There is no verified, legitimate way to use a Cash App “glitch” to get free money. The phrase usually refers to a September 2023 social-media rumor about apparent balance increases during an app disruption—not a confirmed method. Following posts that promise a glitch can expose you to phishing or payment scams.

What does “the Cash App glitch” mean?

The phrase commonly points to the “Cash App Glitch 2023,” also called the “Cash App Debt Glitch 2023.” A Know Your Meme event-history entry, updated September 12, 2023, describes social-media posts that purported to show people adding large sums to their balances during Cash App disruptions. The entry says the alleged exploit’s validity was questionable and likely a viral hoax. Know Your Meme’s event-history entry is a secondary account and notes that it was still being researched and evaluated.

That rumor should not be confused with a technical error. The same entry separately mentions earlier reports of an issue that could double-charge some customers and a September 2023 error centered on the Cash Card feature. Evidence of an app error does not establish that social-media instructions for creating money worked. Images or videos later posted about negative balances also do not independently show what happened to each account or prove how Cash App’s systems operated.

Why you should not try a viral “method”

There is no verified exploit procedure to follow. A post claiming to reveal a cash app glitch method may instead be bait to get you to install an unofficial app, hand over account access, or send money. A February 20, 2025 scam-prevention article describes messages claiming Cash App needs an update that link to fraudulent websites designed to collect login credentials. The article’s scam guidance recommends downloading the app only from official sources such as the Apple App Store or Google Play.

Do not infer that everyone who followed a viral claim was charged a particular amount, prosecuted, or had an account closed. The cited event account does not establish those outcomes. The practical risk is that scammers can use the promise of a glitch to induce actions that put your money or sign-in details at risk.

Warning signs in a Cash App glitch offer

  • A fake update link: A message says you must update or fix Cash App through a website. Don’t sign in through the link; open the app independently and use only official app-store downloads.
  • An upfront payment: A “money flipping” offer promises to multiply money after you send an initial amount. Fake testimonials do not make the promise reliable.
  • A request for account details: Someone claiming to be support contacts you by email, text, or phone and asks for your password, sign-in code, or other account information. Don’t provide it.
  • A demand to repay a supposed accidental payment: A stranger asks you to send a separate payment back. The original payment could have been funded with a stolen card and later reversed, leaving you out the separate amount you sent.
  • A payment screenshot without a matching transaction: An image can appear to show money sent even when no payment is visible in your own account. Check your in-app activity rather than relying on a screenshot or someone’s claim.

What to do if someone sends you a glitch link or payment claim

  1. Don’t follow the method or open suspicious links. Avoid unofficial downloads, and never send money to receive money.
  2. Check the account yourself. Open Cash App independently and review the in-app activity. Treat a screenshot or a stranger’s description as unverified until the transaction appears in your account.
  3. Don’t make a separate repayment based only on a stranger’s request. If a payment appears that you don’t recognize, seek help through the app rather than sending money to a separate account.
  4. Report suspicious activity in the app. The February 2025 secondary-source guidance describes this route: profile icon > Support > Start a Chat. It also describes enabling Security Lock under Privacy & Security. These steps are not verified as current official instructions, so check Cash App’s help center for the current procedure.

If you already entered sign-in details on a linked website, stop interacting with that site and contact Cash App through its independently opened app or official help center. Don’t share a password or sign-in code with a person who contacts you claiming to help.

How to judge the offer, not the “glitch” story

Whether a post calls itself “cash app glitch explained,” a “Cash App Debt Glitch,” or a way to get free money, assess what it asks you to do. An unofficial download, disclosure of sign-in details, an upfront payment, or a separate repayment to a stranger are distinct warning signs—not evidence of a working exploit.
