How to Dispute an Unauthorized Google Play Charge

Unrecognized Google Play charge? Verify the descriptor and purchase history, then report it using the payment-specific route and deadline.

If you don’t recognize a Google Play charge, first check the statement descriptor and your Google Play and Google Payments activity. If the purchase was made by someone you know, request a refund; if it was made by an unknown person, report it as unauthorized. The correct reporting route and deadline depend on how you paid.

Check whether the charge came from Google Play

Look at the exact wording on your card or bank statement. Google Play says its charges appear in formats such as “GOOGLE*App developer name,” “GOOGLE*App name,” or “GOOGLE*Content type” (for example, Google Books). A charge that does not begin with Google did not come from Google Play; contact your payment provider’s fraud department instead. See Google Play’s guidance on unrecognized charges and Google Payments’ unauthorized-charge guidance.

Compare the charge with your Google Play order history and Google Payments activity, and review subscriptions. Other Google payments or Google Pay transactions may not appear in Play order history, so check the relevant Google Payments records too.

Rule out common false alarms

  • Ask family members or friends who may have used the account or a shared device.
  • Check whether the charge is pending and relates to a recently canceled order.
  • Look for a duplicate pending authorization; it may not be a second completed purchase.
  • Consider whether a small temporary authorization appeared after you added a payment method.

Google Payments identifies these as possible explanations for unfamiliar-looking activity. A pending authorization or an accidental purchase is not the same as a purchase by an unknown person.

Choose the right route: refund or unauthorized-charge report

If a friend or family member made the purchase accidentally, Google directs you to request a refund under its Google Play refund policies. If neither you nor anyone you know made it, follow Google’s unauthorized-charge process. The routes are different: a known person’s accidental purchase is a refund issue, while an unknown purchaser is a potential unauthorized transaction.

Report the charge based on how you paid

Google’s stated reporting windows are measured from the transaction date. Act promptly, and use the route for the payment method shown on the transaction.

Payment method Google’s stated action window What to do
Credit card, debit card, or PayPal 120 days from the transaction date Within the window, submit Google’s unauthorized-purchase form. Submit a separate claim for each payment method. Google says an email update is typically sent within seven business days; this is an update estimate, not a guaranteed resolution time. If more than 120 days have passed, contact the card issuer or PayPal fraud department immediately.
Mobile-carrier billing 60 days from the transaction date Ask your mobile carrier for the transaction’s correlation ID or request ID. If the carrier gives you a correlation ID, submit Google’s form. If it gives you a request ID, Google directs you to the carrier’s billing-fraud department. After 60 days, contact that department.
eWallet No Google window stated in the cited guidance Contact the eWallet company’s fraud department immediately.
Another payment type No Google window stated in the cited guidance If you can access the Google Account, contact Google Support. If you cannot access the account, contact the payment method’s fraud department immediately.

The 120-day and 60-day periods are Google’s stated administrative action windows, not measures of the likelihood that a claim will be approved. The cited guidance does not establish a success rate or guarantee that contacting a bank or payment provider will result in a Google refund.

Track the claim and secure your account

After submitting a report, keep the Claim ID sent to the email address used for the report. Google says you can check claim status with that email address and Claim ID. If you submitted the claim while signed in and later recognize the charge, Google provides an option to cancel the claim through its unauthorized-charge guidance.

If someone else may know your Google Account password, or if the device is shared, change or reset the password. You can also enable Google Play purchase verification to help prevent future purchases you did not intend.
