| Method | What you need | Typical timing and cautions |
|---|---|---|
| Branch teller | Cash, account number or debit card, and possibly government-issued photo ID | Cash handed to a bank employee is generally available by the next business day under Regulation CC, subject to exceptions and cutoffs. |
| Deposit-taking ATM | Bank card and PIN; bills may need to be inserted loose or in an envelope, depending on the machine | Availability depends on the ATM, cutoff and funds-availability disclosure. Nonproprietary ATM deposits can have later availability. |
| Retail cash-deposit partner | Supported account app, barcode or card, cash, and sometimes government ID | Partner fees, transaction caps and posting times apply. This option is common for some online accounts. |
Deposit cash at a branch
- Bring the cash, your debit card or account number, and a government-issued photo ID if the bank requests it.
- Complete a deposit slip if that branch uses one. Confirm that the account name and number are correct.
- Hand the cash to the teller and watch the counted amount. Ask when the funds will be available and whether a cash-deposit fee applies.
- Keep the receipt until the deposit appears in your transaction history and the amount is correct.
Citi says valid identification may be requested, particularly for a large deposit. Under Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) Regulation CC guidance, a financial institution generally must make cash deposited in person to a bank employee available no later than the business day after the banking day on which it received the deposit, subject to the regulation’s definitions and exceptions.
Deposit cash at an ATM
- Use your bank’s official locator to find an ATM and confirm on the screen or in the locator that it accepts cash deposits.
- Count the bills before inserting them. Enter your PIN and follow the prompts; Citi notes that some machines require an envelope, while others accept bills directly.
- Review the displayed total before confirming. If the machine rejects a bill, take it back and recount the accepted amount.
- Take the receipt and record the ATM location and time. Compare the receipt with your account activity later.
Not every ATM accepts cash, and some accept only certain deposit types. Banks may also impose ATM deposit-amount limits. If the posted amount is wrong or the deposit does not appear, contact the bank promptly using the number on your card or its official website.
Use a retail cash-deposit partner
Branch and Green Dot
Branch says its card does not support ordinary ATM cash deposits. In the Branch app, use Wallet > Add Funds > Cash Deposit to find participating Green Dot locations. Merchant fees vary, and Branch states that eligible funds are available within 15–30 minutes (guidance updated October 1, 2025).

Chime retail locations
Chime requires deposits at participating retailers. Its help guidance describes barcode, debit-card and Chime-Card options. Walgreens and Duane Reade are listed as fee-free; many other listed partners typically charge $3–$5. Chime reports limits of up to $3,000 per transaction, $3,000 per day, five deposits per day and $10,000 per month. Retailers may request government ID for larger deposits. These are Chime-specific terms, not universal banking limits.
Check fees, limits and identification before you go
- Read the current account fee schedule and the exact ATM or partner screen. A bank, ATM network or retailer can set separate charges.
- Confirm per-transaction, daily and monthly cash limits; a retailer’s limit may be lower than the account provider’s limit.
- Have your account number or debit card ready. A teller may require photo ID, especially for a large cash deposit.
- Before confirming an electronic deposit, check that the displayed account and name are yours.
When will the cash be available?
Branch deposits
FDIC Regulation CC guidance generally requires cash deposited in person to a bank employee to be available no later than the next business day after the bank receives it. Specific exceptions and the bank’s disclosure still control.

Cutoff times
FDIC examination guidance says a bank may set a branch cutoff of 2:00 p.m. or later and an ATM or other off-premises cutoff of noon or later. A deposit after the applicable cutoff, or on a day the bank is closed, may be treated as received on the next banking day.
Nonproprietary ATMs
For a nonproprietary ATM, the cited FDIC schedule allows availability as late as the fifth business day following the deposit day. Your account’s funds-availability disclosure is the controlling document.

Protect yourself and resolve errors
- Choose a branch or ATM shown in the bank’s official locator.
- Count cash before handing it over or inserting it.
- Verify the amount on the teller receipt, ATM screen or partner confirmation.
- Keep the receipt, confirmation number and ATM location until the transaction posts.
- Never hand cash to an unsolicited person claiming to represent your bank.
- If an amount is wrong or a deposit is missing, call promptly using the number on your card or the bank’s official website and provide the receipt details.
Is deposited cash insured?
Cash deposited at an insured bank is covered by FDIC deposit insurance within the applicable ownership and account-category rules. The FDIC identifies the standard maximum deposit insurance amount as $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, for each ownership category. Insurance does not make an incorrect transaction disappear, so retain your deposit evidence while it is being investigated.

How to choose among the options
Compare the official disclosures for access, total fees, deposit and monthly limits, identification requirements, posting speed, cutoff times, receipt quality and whether the location is in-network. A branch is usually the clearest choice for a large or disputed deposit; a bank-operated ATM may be more convenient; and a retail partner may be the only physical-cash option for some online accounts.
